Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he would 'love' to be full-time Man Utd boss, will focus on man management

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told his first official press conference as Manchester United's caretaker manager on Friday (Dec 21) that he would relish the opportunity to be the permanent boss.
The 45-year-old Norwegian, a legendary former player at Old Trafford, has been appointed interim boss until the end of the season, replacing Jose Mourinho, who was sacked on Tuesday.
Solskjaer, on loan from Norway's Molde, conceded that he has not looked beyond the end of the current campaign with the club where he spent nearly 15 years as a player and coach.
But he said he would be interested in taking the job permanently should the opportunity arise.
"When you get a job like this and they ask you to sign for six months, you say 'yeah'," he said.
"I'm happy to help out and my job now for the next six months is to do as well as I can and move the club forward as well as I can.
"I understand there are so many managers who would love to be manager of Manchester United and I am one of them. But it is not something we've talked about, they'll do a process now for the next six months."
Solskjaer, renowned for his threat off the bench and still revered by United supporters for scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final, faces a daunting challenge as he replaces Mourinho.

United have made their worst start in the Premier League era and languish 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, and 11 off the Champions League places.
"My job is to help the players, make them grasp the opportunity now because they all want to be part of Man United," said Solskjaer.
"I'm going to be here to help them, help the team, that is down to man management. I had the best manager as a player and coach to learn how he dealt with players and it's about communication. I'll sit down and speak to the ones not playing, tell them what I expect of them.
"When you're at Man United there are a set of demands and one is to be a team player and I don't think anyone has been on the bench more than me. That's always my comeback to players, you might come on and make an impact."
Solskjaer spoke of the debt he owed to Alex Ferguson, who built a team that dominated English football, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.
Solskjaer will begin his United reign at Cardiff City, the only other Premier League club he has managed - he had a difficult eight-month spell in South Wales and was unable to save the club from relegation.
But he said he had learned from his mistakes.
Solskjaer would not be drawn on his relationship with Paul Pogba, who lost his place under Mourinho and was in conflict with the coach.
"It's about getting every player to the best, speaking to them, the training ground, the philosophy, principles, how we want to play," said Solskjaer, who coached Pogba in the reserves at Old Trafford.
"It doesn't matter what team you're coaching, they all want to have a picture of how you want to play, the qualities.
"They are quality players so it will be easier to get the players expressing themselves. You play with courage, go out there and express your skills."

Football. Bloody hell! The comeback of all comebacks. Forget what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did as a player on that famous night in 1999, this was a moment like never before. You just don't win from a two-goal home leg defeat. Not in the Champions League. But Manchester United, in the most dramatic of circumstances, did exactly that.

St Gabriel's overcome the odds

St Gabriel's overcome the odds

With a key defender suspended and their captain struggling with an injury, St Gabriel's Secondary School's football teacher-in-charge Laura Huang was hardly confident ahead of the Schools National B Division boys' League Three final against Spectra Secondary School yesterday.
To make things worse, St Gabriel's winger Joshua Joseph suffered a cut to his face in the 21st minute and his replacement Aryan Menon was sent off nine minutes later for arguing with the referee.
However, Spectra were also reduced to 10 men in the 37th minutes when Muhammad Ryan Tsaqif received his second yellow card.
St Gabriel's regained the initiative to score through centre-back Gideon Tai (40th minute) and striker Aiman Yazid (76th) for a 2-0 win at Our Tampines Hub.
Said Huang: "The result was definitely better than what I had expected.
"Our main defender was serving a suspension and our captain sustained an injury during the semi-finals so he was limping throughout this match.
"We didn't expect to come so far, but we just kept telling ourselves to try our best.

St Gabriel's Secondary centre-back Gideon Tai's goal in the final was his first for the school in four years.

"Even when the situation was not advantageous to us, we did not let it get to us.
"We fought on, we never thought about giving up."
The two red cards dominated the early proceedings before Gideon curled in a superb free kick to give his team the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Spectra went in search of an equaliser in the second half, but Aiman dashed their hopes of a comeback with the second goal.
Man of the match Gideon said: "I was so excited and happy after I scored because it was almost half-time and it was my first goal for the school in four years.
"Before the game, I told my teammates that I will work as hard as I can to get the goal so I'm very happy that I scored."
Despite the loss, Spectra coach Ashraf Ariffin was proud of his team's performance.
"We started off very well, but we didn't finish our chances and then when we lost a man, the boys lost a bit of focus," he said.
"After we conceded the goal late in the first half, it was quite hard to get back into the game in the second half.
"They did all that they could and gave their best and that is all that we can ask."
Yesterday's League Three final was the first of five finals in the boys' football tournament this year.
In the preliminary rounds, all schools are split into 16 groups with five to six schools per group.
The teams are then placed in five leagues - from League One to Five - based on the positions they finished in their groups.

Games at Palace always difficult: Pep

Games at Palace always difficult: Pep
LONDON • Despite suffering a setback in midweek after losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, Manchester City are still on course for an unprecedented quadruple.
So whenever his squad's character is questioned - even when the criticism comes from within - Pep Guardiola has to leap to their defence.
City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, whose contract expires at the end of next season, was scathing in his assessment of their defeat by Spurs, claiming the visitors were "not brave enough" in north London.
But, ahead of today's Premier League match at Crystal Palace, who beat City 3-2 in the league last December, Guardiola refuted his remarks, insisting that while "he (Gundogan) can say whatever he wants", he "absolutely did not agree" with them.
"We have been for 20 months incredible, two games in the last 24 lost. Twenty months, winning every three days, 180 points over the past two seasons," Guardiola said.
"We had two days' rest, they (Spurs) had six. Unfortunately, we could not score, but we have the second leg (on Wednesday) with our friends at home and we'll go for the semi-finals."
While he remains hopeful of turning things around in the reverse fixture, the title race must first take precedence, and the Spaniard knows that "Selhurst Park is always difficult because of the stadium and the quality of the players".
The City manager said: "We knew it weeks ago, how it would be between these important games. There are six games left (in the league).
"We know what we are playing for and we are going to see."
He also revealed midfielder Bernardo Silva and defender Oleksandr Zinchenko were touch and go for the meeting with Roy Hodgson's men. Silva, whose creativity was sorely missed against Spurs, has been one of City's standout players this term, but Guardiola will not take any chances with his fitness as their campaign draws to a close.
Calling the Portugal international an "incredible player", he added: "We will see today. Playing wide, he is a fighter.
"He's so intelligent and clever defensively. He knows when to cut back inside and, with the ball, he can do anything."

Solskjaer stays upbeat despite United wobble

Solskjaer stays upbeat despite United wobble

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Manchester United were the architects of their "own downfall" after they were beaten by Wolves for the second time in three weeks.
Tuesday's 2-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux in which Ashley Young was sent off for two bookable offences means United have little margin for error if they are to finish in the top four.
Scott McTominay gave the away side an early lead - his first for the club - but Diogo Jota equalised after a mistake by Fred before Chris Smalling scored an own goal to inflict Solskjaer's first defeat since he was appointed on a full-time basis.
While the Norwegian had no complaints about referee Mike Dean's decision to send off Young just before the hour mark, he was frustrated that his players failed to convert more of their chances.
He said: "A very good start, we should have been three up. It was a very good performance until they scored the second goal.
"But for their goalkeeper, we should have won. That's football for you and that's why it's the game we all love, it's not like maths."
Asked whether the wobble - United have picked up three points out of a possible nine - means things are "resetting" at Old Trafford after an excellent initial impact, Solskjaer claimed he could not "control the result".

  • 3

Points won by Manchester United out of a possible nine in their last three Premier League matches.

He added: "We don't look at it as that. We can control what we do on the pitch performance-wise, and we've played well enough tonight.
"So I don't think there is any kickback. I was very pleased with the chances and the intent."
The result means the Red Devils remain fifth, and two points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
They still need to face league champions Manchester City and Chelsea at home, while Luke Shaw will be suspended for their next two games after collecting his 10th yellow card of the campaign.
However, Solskjaer insisted he was still "confident" and that "it is going to be difficult for anybody who plays against us".
The 46-year-old, who revealed he had an eye on the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona next Wednesday, added: "Now we need 15 (points) from the last six (matches), so we don't have room for many more losses.
"It is a difficult run, but then we are a very good team as well.
"We will use one or two days to analyse and recover, and then we will prepare for Barcelona, which will be a fantastic challenge."
Separately, Fulham became the second club to be relegated after a 4-1 loss at Watford on Tuesday.
Despite splurging over £100 million (S$177.9 million) on players since winning promotion last year, it has been a wretched term for the Cottagers, who have the league's worst defensive record, shipping 76 goals in 33 games.
Owner Shahid Khan yesterday apologised to the fans for the debacle before stating that the club's hierarchy "hold ourselves accountable".

Football: France make light work of South Korea in World Cup opener

PARIS (REUTERS) - A rampant France smashed South Korea out of sight on Friday (June 7) to open their women's soccer World Cup campaign in irrepressible style with a 4-0 victory that sent a warning to all other teams with a design on the trophy.
It was one-way traffic all night in a packed 45,000-seater Parc des Princes as the French launched wave after wave of attack at the hapless Koreans, running out easy winners to stamp their authority on Group A of the FIFA extravaganza.
France skipper Amandine Henry controlled the midfield with a firm grip and deft touch, while strikers Eugenie Le Sommer and Delphine Cascarino were constant threats.
From the very first minutes South Korea struggled to get out of their own half and Le Sommer set the tone after nine minutes when she slammed a shot past Korean keeper Kim Min-jung into the roof of the net to send the stadium into raptures.
France had all the play, and thought they had doubled their lead after 27 minutes when Griedge Mbock Bathy slammed a volley home, only for the video assistant referee to rule it out for offside two minutes later.
Wendie Renard made amends after 35 minutes, the powerful central defender thumping a header home for her 21st international goal. She added another headed goal to make it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime of what was rapidly becoming a non-contest.
The Koreans were being outclassed in every department, and trudged off at the break having barely ventured out of their own half.
Korea desperately scrambled to keep the French at bay - just - and with the result in no doubt French coach Corinne Diacre looked to preserve some of her star names for later action, taking Cascarino off in the 70th minute, replacing her with Valerie Gauvin; and replacing Amel Majri with fellow defender Eve Perisset four minutes later.
Just as the Koreans thought they had somehow kept the French at bay for the second period, Henry added to the tally, slamming a right foot shot curling into the Korean net from the edge of the area for 4-0 and a fitting finale.

Indonesian football chief grilled over match-fixing

Indonesian football chief grilled over match-fixing
JAKARTA • Indonesia's top football official, who has been in the job less than a month, was questioned by police yesterday over a match-fixing scandal that has rocked the country's domestic league.
Joko Driyono became acting chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) in late January after Edy Rahmayadi stepped down in the wake of a corruption probe that has seen police identify more than a dozen suspects.
Joko was questioned yesterday over allegations he was involved in destroying evidence of match-fixing. National police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said: "The main focus of today's examination concerns the problem of destruction, theft and removal of evidence."
Police raided Joko's apartment last week and confiscated laptops, flash drives and dozens of documents, including match and financial records. He has been slapped with a 20-day travel ban, but has not yet been arrested.
Indonesian football has been rocked by a series of match-fixing allegations, with the association and police announcing a crackdown in December after a PSSI executive member was caught on tape trying to bribe a coach approximately US$10,000 (S$13,600) to throw a second-division game.
He resigned and was handed a three-year ban and fine.
While it has a low international profile, Indonesia has attracted ex-Premier League players including former Chelsea star Michael Essien and former Tottenham midfielder Didier Zokora.
But Indonesian football has been tarnished on the global stage by a host of problems over the years, including deadly hooliganism and foreign players dying after going unpaid and being unable to afford medical care.

Arsenal have seemingly moved ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic. The Blues secured a season-long loan deal for Kovacic last summer, and Maurizio Sarri is likely to be keen on securing the Croatia international's signature on a permanent basis should he remain at Stamford Bridge.

'He's a super-hero': Tearful Pochettino salutes hat-trick hero Lucas

AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino wept tears of joy as the emotional Tottenham manager hailed "super-hero" Lucas Moura for the incredible hat-trick that fired Tottenham into their first Champions League final.
Tottenham enjoyed arguably the greatest night in their history as Lucas's second-half treble clinched a 3-2 semi-final second-leg win that sent Pochettino's side through on away goals.
With just seconds left at the Johan Cruyff Arena, Tottenham were heading out of the tournament, but Brazilian forward Lucas came to the rescue with a superb strike from the edge of the area.
It was all too much for Pochettino, who danced with delight before burying his head in the turf as he let his emotions run wild.
When the final whistle went, Pochettino sobbed uncontrollably and he was still misty-eyed when he spoke to the media.
"It's still difficult to talk. The emotion is amazing, thank you to football. My players are heroes - in the last year I was telling everyone this group are heroes," Pochettino told BT Sport.
"They are all heroes but Lucas was a super-hero. Unbelievable hat-trick. He deserves it, he is a great guy.

"The second half they were amazing. Thank you football! This type of emotion without football is not possible."
Tottenham were written off in some quarters before the match after losing the first leg at home 1-0, a match that Ajax dominated for long periods.
And Pochettino took a subtle swipe at the doubters when he said: "Thank you to everyone who has believed in us. To describe this in words is difficult.
"We were talking before the game that when you work and when you feel the love it's not stress, it's passion of the team.
"We showed we love the sport and football. Today was amazing. It was a joy to watch this kind of game.
"It's difficult to compete at this level. I am so grateful to be a coach. To be in football and to live this type of football."
Welling up with emotion, Pochettino was crying again towards the end of the interview as he dedicated the astonishing triumph to his family.
"To have the chance to play a final is amazing. I want to remember my family, it is for them too. For the people who support us in that moment, it is amazing to reward them," he said as the tears flowed once more.
"I think everyone deserves it in this club, with all the tough times we've had in the five years that we have been here."

PARIS (REUTERS) - Kylian Mbappe became the youngest player in 45 years to reach 50 Ligue 1 goals as Paris St Germain beat visiting Nimes 3-0 on Saturday (Feb 23) to stretch their lead at the top to 17 points.
Christopher Nkunku's opener and Mbappe's second half-double maintained PSG's 100 per cent home record in the league this season and lifted them further clear of second-placed Lille who drew with Strasbourg on Friday.
Nkunku put the capital club in front five minutes before the break when he expertly controlled Marco Verratti's ball over the top before producing a composed finish.
Mbappe had two goals ruled out in the first half, one for offside and one for handball, but made amends after the interval as he finished from close range on 69 minutes to mark his half century in the French top flight before finishing off a sweeping counter-attack.
At the age of 20 years, two months and three days, the France striker became the youngest player since Yannick Stopyra in 1982 to reach the 50-goal landmark.
PSG lead the standings on 68 points with 22 wins from 25 games. Nimes are in 11th place with 36 points.

Football: Fifa drops plan for 48-team World Cup in 2022

Football: Fifa drops plan for 48-team World Cup in 2022

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND (AFP) - Fifa president Gianni Infantino was dealt a blow on Wednesday (May 22) when world football's governing body shelved a proposed expansion of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams.
Fifa dumped the plans "following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process" which led to the conclusion that "under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be made now".
"(The tournament) will therefore remain as originally planned with 32 teams and no proposal will be submitted at the next Fifa Congress on June 5," Fifa said in a statement.
The expansion was a pet project of Infantino, who pushed the idea despite the likely need for Qatar's neighbours to put aside a two-year blockade and help host the tournament.
"The involvement of these countries in the organisation of the tournament jointly with Qatar implies the lifting of this blockade, in particular the lifting of restrictions on the movement of people and goods," said a feasibility study submitted to March's Fifa Congress in Miami.
The study, seen by AFP, also claimed that a Qatar World Cup with 48 teams would generate "between US$300 and US$400 million (S$414 and S$552 million) of additional income".
Specifically, Fifa was counting on an additional US$120 million in TV rights, US$150 million in marketing rights and US$90 million from ticket sales.
The news comes after Europe's top football clubs said in March they would boycott an expanded 24-team Club World Cup - also backed by Infantino - which is planned to take place between June 17 and July 4, 2021, replacing the Confederations Cup international tournament.

COMPLICATED PROPOSITION

An announcement of the final decision hadn't been expected until next month's congress, which is being held in Paris ahead of the Women's World Cup taking place in France between June 7 and July 7.
However, the statement said that the study "concluded that due to the advanced stage of preparations and the need for a detailed assessment of the potential logistical impact on the host country, more time would be required and a decision could not be taken before the deadline of June".
Fifa has dropped the idea despite recommending in March that the number of teams should be raised to 48 for 2022, ahead of the planned 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Expanding the competition for the 2022 tournament was always a complicated proposition.
Fifa had sounded out potential co-hosts in the region willing to support Qatar, a complicated proposition for Doha which is subject to an ongoing embargo by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and their allies.
Last week, Hassan al-Thawadi, the secretary general of Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, said that a feasibility study jointly carried out by Fifa and Qatar would favour "expansion to other countries".
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut all ties with Doha in June 2017, accusing Qatar of supporting Iran and Islamist groups.
Qatar denies the charges and says Saudi Arabia and its allies aim to incite government change in the emirate, the world's largest exporter of liquified natural gas.
Gulf states Kuwait and Oman have not taken sides in the crisis. However, in April, Oman announced it was "not ready" to host matches.

Football: Baihakki gets fresh shot at Thai top tier

Less than three weeks before he turns 35 on Jan 31, national defender Baihakki Khaizan is counting his blessings after he signed a one-year contract with Thai League 1 side Trat FC on Friday.
The 1.89-metre centre-back moves from Thai giants Muangthong United and is looking forward to playing in the top tier after being sent on loan to Thai League 2 side Udon Thani, where he played in 23 league games and scored one goal as they finished sixth last season.
Trat were also in the second division, but were promoted after finishing second behind PTT Rayong. The White Elephants play in the 6,000-seater Thai Province Stadium and are based in the coastal province of Trat, an hour's flight from Bangkok.
Baihakki told The Straits Times: "While I enjoyed myself at Udon Thani, I was disappointed at being loaned out to the second division as my mission was to play in T1.
"After a year of patience, I'm finally here and I hope to achieve something together with Trat. We may be a newly promoted team, but Trat have a decent squad and made some good signings.
"We take inspiration from Prachuap, who were promoted and finished sixth in T1 last season. Sure, there are giants like Buriram, Bangkok United and Muangthong, but T1 is also an exciting and unpredictable league, and we look forward to surprising people."
He has been one of Singapore's most travelled Lions in recent years, after winning the 2003 S-League Young Player of the Year award in his debut season with Geylang United.
From 2009 to 2012, he played for three big Indonesian clubs - Persija Jakarta, Persib Bandung and Medan Chiefs. Upon his return to Singapore, he won the Malaysian Super League with the LionsXII in 2013 before signing with Johor Darul Takzim the following year.

RARING TO GO
After a year of patience, I'm finally here and I hope to achieve something together with Trat.
BAIHAKKI KHAIZAN, 34-year-old Singapore defender, on his latest challenge.

He played for Warriors FC in the S-League for a season in 2017 before moving to Thailand last year. Singapore Premier League side Hougang United had been keen to sign him to beef up their defence, but he decided to go for a bigger challenge and pay packet overseas.
"I appreciate the interest from Hougang, and they gave me a good headache," said Baihakki.
"People assume many negative things about 35-year-old players but I feel I can still keep up with the modern game and go on, and I am thankful for teams who recognise and value my abilities.
"Nobody knows whether such an offer from a top-tier Thai side will come again, it could be my last chance and I must make full use of this to prove my worth."
Having played only 23 minutes in Singapore's failed AFF Suzuki Cup campaign in November, he hopes to add to his 134 caps after the Lions appoint their new head coach by next month. "It is always an honour to wear the national jersey, and I'm always available. But each coach has his own thinking so for now I can focus only on doing my best for Trat," he said.
Baihakki's deal means there are now four Singaporean footballers playing in Thailand, with Army United goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, Nong Bua Pitchaya custodian Izwan Mahbud and Bangkok Glass defender Irfan Fandi all in T2.
Over in Malaysia, national skipper and midfielder Hariss Harun continues to captain MSL champions JDT after signing a contract extension in October that keeps him at the club until 2021, and utility player Safuwan Baharudin is set to stay with FA Cup winners Pahang.
Defender Shakir Hamzah is a new addition to Kedah, who are under Singaporean coach Aidil Sharin, while winger Faris Ramli has joined second-division side Perlis from top-tier team PKNS FC.
Ikhsan Fandi is the only Lion in Europe, having signed a two-year deal with Norwegian second-tier side Raufoss on Saturday.

Football: Arnautovic brace rescues West Ham in 2-2 draw with Brighton

LONDON (REUTERS) - Marko Arnautovic scored twice in the space of two minutes as West Ham United salvaged a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion after conceding two second half goals at the London Stadium on Wednesday (Jan 2).
After a dull first half, with striker Andy Carroll making his first Premier League start in a year as the lone target man before being replaced at the interval, the game between the two mid-table sides burst into life.
Brighton took the lead in the 57th against the run of play when goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski punched out a corner shot as far as Dale Stephens, who volleyed the ball home from the edge of the area.
The visitors went 2-0 up in the 59th through Shane Duffy, again off a corner kick, who flicked the ball in from a tight angle at the back post.
If West Ham looked to have crumbled, Arnautovic had other thoughts.
The Austrian pulled one back from close range in the 66th and equalised in the 68th when substitute Michail Antonio crossed from the right - with the ball almost over the byline - for him to fire home.

Football: Fulham dig deep to deny Newcastle and earn first clean sheet

LONDON (REUTERS) - Fulham secured their first clean sheet of the season with some dogged defending in a 0-0 draw with Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday (Dec 22).
The hosts, looking for a second successive win, were unable to find a way past a Fulham side who remain bottom of the standings but have stopped shipping goals at the rate they did before coach Claudio Ranieri succeeded Slavisa Jokanovic.
That was almost undone after 20 minutes at St James' Park as a header from Jamaal Lascelles took a deflection off Fulham striker and ex-Newcastle man Aleksandar Mitrovic and was going in before being hooked off the line.
Newcastle had a penalty appeal turned down before halftime with a Matt Ritchie shot appearing to hit the hand of defender Calum Chambers, but referee Martin Atkinson was unconvinced.
Rafa Benitez's side continued to pump balls into the area in the second half, looking to find the head of striker Salomon Rondon, but the Venezuelan could not carve out a clear-cut chance.
Newcastle had another appeal for a penalty late on when Kenedy felt he was pulled by Fulham's Joe Bryan in the box. However, again, the hosts were denied a spot kick as the match finished in a stalemate leaving them 15th in the standings.
They were also lucky not to concede in stoppage time when Mitrovic's shot was blocked.
"During the game I was not happy with some situations and decisions. The worst thing is that, in a game we could win, where we were pushing and had control, we could have lost it in the last counter-attack," Benitez said.
"Sometimes it can be tense at home, when they say you have to win the game, but Fulham spent a lot of money in the summer. They are bottom but have a good team. They are organised, they had five at the back and were dangerous on the counter-attack."
Ranieri was a happier man as Fulham showed signs that they could start to climb out of trouble.
"It is very important for us. (In the) First half maybe we created more play and had possession well, but they had a very big chance," the Italian said.
"Second half we lost control and they were dangerous, but we had four or five chances on the counter-attack, so at the end I'm happy because every point we achieve is good."

Football: Jose Mourinho targets June return to club management, rules out handling national team

(REUTERS) - Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is targeting a return to club management during the close season in June and has an idea about the type of club he wants to take charge of, the Portuguese has said.
The 56-year-old has been out of a job since he was sacked by the English giants in December following a dismal run of results that left them sixth in the Premier League standings, 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
"What I have in mind is that I would like to be back in the summer, in June, for a new club, for a new pre-season," Mourinho told BeIN Sports.
"I know exactly what I don't want. That's the reason why I had to say (no) already to three or four different offers. And I know what I want, in terms of not a specific club but the nature of the job, the dimension of the job."
Mourinho had said in January that he was not sure if he would manage another club in England after stints with Chelsea and United.
He, however, ruled out taking the reins of a national team as he prefers the day-to-day work that comes with being a club manager.
"I don't think so," he said, when asked if he would take charge of a national team. "I think a national team job is a very specific job.
"I like daily football, I like daily work, I like many competitions, I like matches and I want to stay in football club level. But who knows?"

Football: MLS champions Atlanta name former Dutch star Frank de Boer as coach

NEW YORK (AFP) - Major League Soccer (MLS) champions Atlanta United have named retired Dutch star Frank de Boer as the club's new coach, replacing Argentinian Gerardo Martino.
The 48-year-old Dutchman guided his former club Ajax to four consecutive Dutch league titles but less successful stints followed at Inter Milan and England's Crystal Palace.
In announcing last October that he was leaving Atlanta, Martino said the grind of a club campaign kept him from going home as much as he wanted. But he has been linked to the Mexican national team.
Former defender de Boer takes over on Jan 1 with Atlanta set for a pre-season match on Jan 14 and a Concacaf Champions League campaign that begins in February.
"The club's sportive ambitions, as set out in a long-term strategy to be the best in class, clearly fits my personal ambitions," he said.
"I would like to build on the current success to develop a secure, solid foundation for the club at the top of MLS and beyond."
De Boer lasted only 85 days at Inter after losing four of five Serie A matches and was gone after 10 weeks from Crystal Palace after a 0-4 start in the 2017-18 Premier League.
"Frank de Boer has a distinguished background, both as manager and player, and we're ecstatic to welcome him to our club," Atlanta president Darren Eales said.
Atlanta secured their first MLS Cup in just their second season when they beat Portland Timbers 2-0 earlier this month.

Football: Quadruple still on as Jesus heads City into FA Cup final

LONDON (REUTERS) The "impossible" quadruple dream remains intact for Manchester City after an early headed goal from Gabriel Jesus sealed a scrappy 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (April 6) to put them into the FA Cup final.
Jesus launched himself into the air to connect decisively in the third minute but City never hit top gear and they rather laboured to victory in an instantly forgettable match.
Nevertheless, after bagging the League Cup, being locked in a titanic battle with Liverpool for the Premier League title and in the Champions League quarter-finals, Pep Guardiola's side remain on course for an unprecedented clean sweep.
It was a tired-looking display against Premier League relegation battlers Brighton, though, and City will need to rediscover their spark ahead of Tuesday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League last-eight tie.
Guardiola was quick to play down the "Q" word.
"My opinion is that nobody has done it (won the quadruple) so why can we do it?," Guardiola said.
"It is almost impossible to achieve everything, that is the truth. Our fans will come, more than today, for the final, we are losing players every game but still we will try to do it.
"I am happy to be in the final, we extend our season by one more week and we are happy for that."

Back at Wembley where they beat Chelsea on penalties to win the League Cup in February, City were huge favourites to get past a Brighton side with other things on their mind.
Whatever plan Brighton boss Chris Hughton had cooked up to stop a City side who had won 20 of their last 22 matches in all competitions was in tatters after only three minutes.
In one of the only fluid moves they put together all afternoon at a less-than-full Wembley, Kevin de Bruyne whipped in a superb low cross and Jesus arrived at the far post to plant a diving header past Brighton keeper Matthew Ryan.
The Brighton fans, who greatly outnumbered City's in the 71,000 crowd, must have feared the worst in the south coast's club's first FA Cup semi-final since 1983 when they beat Sheffield Wednesday before losing the final to Manchester United in a replay after the first game ended 2-2.
But the onslaught never arrived.
And had City fullback Kyle Walker been shown a red card during the first half after a clash with Alireza Jahanbakhsh the outcome could have been different.
REACTED ANGRILY
Walker reacted angrily after being shoved in the back and as the players squared up face to face, he appeared to move his head into Jahanbakhsh forehead.
The incident went to the VAR, which is being used in the FA Cup, but referee Anthony Taylor was not required to send Walker off, although he was replaced at halftime by Danilo.
"I have seen it a few times and my opinion is it is a red card," Hughton said. "If Alireza goes down clutching his head it would have been a different outcome."
Brighton gradually grew in belief and but for a superb goal-line clearance by Aymeric Laporte they could have drawn level, the Frenchman hacking clear just when Glenn Murray seemed poised to equalise early in the second half.
Hughton's side caused the occasional problem from set-pieces and with City unusually lethargic the result was never in the bag until referee Anthony Taylor blew for fulltime.
City will face the winners of Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers who meet in the second semi-final on Sunday.
