Football: Klopp to 'wait and see' on Salah head injury, Firmino to miss Barca clash

NEWCASTLE, United Kingdom (AFP) - Liverpool's Mohamed Salah was stretchered off with a head knock during the 3-2 win at Newcastle on Saturday (May 4) leaving manager Jurgen Klopp sweating on the Egyptian's fitness ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash with Barcelona.
And Klopp will definitely be without another of his prolific attacking trident with Roberto Firmino ruled out due to a groin injury.
Liverpool face a monumental task to overturn a 3-0 first leg deficit against Barca if they are to reach the Champions League final for the second consecutive season.
Salah was caught by Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka as they challenged for an aerial ball 20 minutes from time at St. James' Park.
"We'll have to see. He took a blow to the head. He watched the game in the locker room, he was OK, but we have to do more tests," Klopp told Sky Sports.
Firmino was not involved on Saturday and Klopp confirmed he will miss Barca's visit.
"He will not be ready for Tuesday and the rest we will see," said the German on the possibility Firmino could be fit for Liverpool's final league game of the season against Wolves on May 12.
Salah had earlier scored his 26th goal of the season to put Liverpool 2-1 in front, before Salomon Rondon levelled early in the second-half to make it 2-2.
Divock Origi then headed Liverpool's late winner as the Reds went back to the top of the Premier League.

Football: Son's late winner gives Tottenham edge over Man City in Champions League quarter-final first leg

LONDON (REUTERS) - Son Heung-min once again proved there is more to Tottenham Hotspur than Harry Kane as the South Korean's late goal sealed a 1-0 home win over Manchester City in an absorbing Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday (April 9).
With Spurs talisman Kane having hobbled off injured and favourites City beginning to turn the screw, Son sent the home fans inside the London club's majestic new stadium into delirium as he fired past Ederson in the 78th minute.
It gave Tottenham a slender but precious advantage to take to City's Etihad Stadium next week when they will attempt to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time.
Quadruple-chasing City were not at their best as Spurs chased and harried Pep Guardiola's side for 90 minutes and they will rue Sergio Aguero's first-half penalty miss.
The Argentine was handed the chance to put City ahead when Danny Rose was adjudged by VAR to have handled, but his 13th minute spot kick was brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris.
The French keeper's heroics produced a deafening roar not heard along the Tottenham High Road since Spurs moved out of their old stadium two years ago, but it was nothing compared to the sounds that greeted Son's 78th minute winner.
"As a team we never give up, we fight until 90 minutes. I think we deserved to win, we were more clinical than them," said Son, who last week scored the first Premier League goal in the 62,000-seat arena, and now owns the first European strike there.
"I like this stadium, it is amazing to play here, I am grateful for the opportunity to play at this stadium."

Tottenham fans in the 17,500 capacity South Stand displayed placards before kickoff spelling out the club's motto "To Dare Is To Do" - and their team obliged, going toe-to-toe with a side who had won 21 of their last 23 games in all competitions.

SUPERB STOP

Dele Alli volleyed Moussa Sissoko's cross over early on but Tottenham were then stopped in their tracks.
Raheem Sterling cut in and fired goalwards and Rose, diving to block, was penalised for handball, courtesy of VAR, despite no City players even appealing for a penalty.
Lloris, who has come in for criticism this season, guessed right and made a superb stop.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said on the eve of the game that his side would need to match the intensity of a City outfit oozing quality, both on the pitch and on a bench containing Kevin de Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane.
Tottenham worked their socks off to deny City time but after England forward Kane hobbled off just before the hour mark with a worrying-looking ankle injury, they appeared to be flagging.
City, for whom Sterling was a constant menace, were hunting an away goal but then Son, who has a knack of scoring goals for the team Guardiola once described as the "Harry Kane team" when their talisman has been sidelined, struck the decisive blow.
At first his control from Christian Eriksen's measured pass was sloppy, but Son retrieved the ball, then cut in from the byline and lashed a shot past Ederson, sparking delirium.

Football: Giroud demands important role at Chelsea next season

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud said he has been approached by other clubs to play for them next season but wants to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge if manager Maurizio Sarri can offer regular first-team opportunities.
Giroud, who is the top scorer in the Europa League with nine goals, is out of contract at the end of the campaign, although Chelsea have an option to extend it for another 12 months.
The 32-year-old Frenchman has started just seven Premier League games this season and has seen limited opportunities since the arrival of Argentina international striker Gonzalo Higuain in January.
"Trust me I'm very frustrated when I'm not on the pitch, but I just don't want to show it," Giroud told a news conference ahead Chelsea's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Slavia Prague on Thursday.
"You need to keep that frustration for you. And transform that into positive energy on the pitch.
"I'm not happy to play the second role. That's why I said next year I will need to have a more important role to play in the team."
When asked whether he has already had offers to go elsewhere, Giroud added: "Yes but I won't tell you. The priority is Chelsea.
"With what I've achieved here, there is no reason they won't give me one more year. But I need to be happy, also."
Chelsea hold a 1-0 advantage over Slavia from the away leg, courtesy a late headed goal by defender Marcos Alonso.
They will be without defender Antonio Rudiger, who limped out of Sunday's 2-0 league defeat against Liverpool at Anfield with a knee injury.
However, Chelsea's assistant coach Gianfranco Zola expects the German international to return for the league trip to top-four rivals Manchester United on April 28.
"It looks not as bad as we thought, luckily. When he came off limping, we were worried," Zola said.
"Yes, there is a strong possibility that we see him (against United). He's a warrior and won't want to miss a game like that. The next few days will be very important to see if he can continue recovering."

Jubilant Liverpool keen to keep Klopp beyond 2022

Jubilant Liverpool keen to keep Klopp beyond 2022

LONDON • Liverpool fans perched on rooftops, speed cameras and bus shelters on Sunday afternoon. Others clambered up lamp posts and sat astride traffic lights.
The open-top bus transporting Jurgen Klopp's squad was reduced to a crawl by the number of fans turning out to celebrate their sixth Champions League/European Cup triumph.
By the time it reached its destination, almost four hours had passed, and Merseyside police estimated that up to 750,000 people had lined the streets.
The sight of families, young and old, standing shoulder to shoulder was a vision to behold and highlighted how the supporters have been unified behind an institution that was idling before Klopp's arrival in October 2015.
And that is why the club's owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), wants him to oversee the construction of a dynasty at Anfield by staying on as the manager beyond the three years remaining on his annual £7 million (S$12.1 million) contract.
The German spent seven years each in his previous positions with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, but FSG feels he can break new ground.
There is a belief that a young squad are primed to challenge consistently for the top honours under Klopp - who received the loudest cheers as he hoisted the trophy into the air - so the club's hierarchy is keen to tie him down.
Liverpool also want to ward off rival interest, with Bayern Munich great Franz Beckenbauer telling German daily Bild yesterday the 51-year-old was "one of the best coaches in the world" and would be a "good fit" at the Allianz Arena.
Reds chairman Tom Werner said: "When the players threw Jurgen in the air after our victory, they were acknowledging what all Liverpool fans know - he is beloved by all who appreciate football.
"Jurgen is a brilliant coach, but just as importantly, he is a humble and caring man."
Of the turnout for their 12.8km victory parade, Klopp joked: "I don't know exactly how many people live in Liverpool but it does not look like there is a lot (of) space for fans of other clubs.
"It is incredible. If you are a young kid, which do you support?
"There are not a lot of opportunities or options other than Liverpool.
"You see in the eyes how much it means. It is really intense."

Football: Singapore Under-22s seal Merlion Cup final spot after 3-0 win over the Philippines

SINGAPORE - Fandi Ahmad was a proud coach and father after watching his Singapore Under-22 side deliver a composed 3-0 Merlion Cup win over the Philippines on Friday (June 7) with his two sons among the goalscorers.
The semi-final victory sends the Young Lions into Sunday's final against Thailand, who beat Indonesia 2-1 in the earlier match at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Given striker Ikhsan Fandi, 20, had arrived from Norway on Tuesday and was jet-lagged, it was no surprise that national U-22 coach Fandi opted to leave his younger son on the bench.
Despite the absence of Ikhsan, who has netted four goals in 11 games for Norwegian second-tier club Raufoss this season, the Republic took the lead in the first half through his replacement Amiruldin Asraf.
The Home United forward stole possession from Philippines defender Pete Forrosuelo in the penalty area and easily scored past goalkeeper Michael Asong in the 26th minute.
The host looked threatening on set-pieces and Singapore captain Irfan Fandi, 21, was an obvious danger thanks to his 1.88m frame during corners and free-kicks.
The centre-back almost scored in the 40th minute but his downward header hit the upright.
Fandi's eldest son made no mistake though in the 61st minute and guided his header past Asong to double Singapore's lead.
Six minutes later, Ikhsan, a half-time substitute, completed a swift counter-attack with a simple tap in after a cross from the right by midfielder Daniel Goh.

Abramovich steps in amid racism outrage

Abramovich steps in amid racism outrage
LONDON • Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has requested reports on the club's attempts to clamp down on the fans who sang anti-Semitic songs during the Europa League tie against Vidi in Budapest on Thursday.
The Blues have asked the Hungarian club for close-circuit television footage that they hope will enable them to identify the vocal minority of travelling fans responsible for the chanting, which has disgusted Abramovich and others connected to the club.
Manager Maurizio Sarri has told The Daily Mail he "condemned every form of racism and discrimination". Having experienced it himself while managing in Italy, he also felt it was not just an English problem as "there are some stupid people all over the world".
Midfielder Cesc Fabregas agreed, saying he was happy for the club to be taught a lesson if it led to better behaviour from their supporters.
The Spaniard said: "The focus now is on Chelsea for what happened. Unfortunately, if we look around carefully all over the world, all sports, all football clubs, we will find things like that.
"The people that did it, they will be punished for it and they will be taught a big lesson in their lives. The quicker we get rid of these people, the better. This is not the real face of Chelsea."
Chelsea will issue life bans to any miscreants whom they are able to identify, although that may not be straightforward because the incident took place at an away ground where they do not control the ticketing arrangements.
Abramovich has been kept informed of Chelsea's attempts to combat racist behaviour, which include cooperating with an inquiry by London police into a supporter who allegedly racially abused Raheem Sterling during last Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City.
The club have since temporarily suspended four people over that incident.
While Abramovich, who is a Russian Jew, has not been to home games this term after being denied a visa to enter the United Kingdom in May, he has followed Chelsea's progress closely and is passionate about eradicating a problem that has afflicted the club for years.
He took a prominent role this year in Chelsea launching a campaign against anti-Semitism, which is a problem among some fans that is exacerbated when they play Tottenham, who are known to have a big Jewish fan base.
While Uefa is still looking into the reports before deciding on any further action, a possible sanction could result in the closure of a section of Stamford Bridge for a Europa League knockout tie.
The ongoing racial storm threatens to overshadow their league game at Brighton, where Sarri's men are hoping to build on their morale-boosting win over champions City last weekend.
But Seagulls manager Chris Hughton feels off-field events will have little bearing on the pitch, saying: "They've adapted very well (to Sarri), any team that beats City at the moment has to have quality. The likes of Chelsea have so many threats that it's difficult to cope with all of them."

Football: PSG take charge with 2-0 win at United, Pogba sent off

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Manchester United's Champions League hopes were hanging by a thread after they lost 2-0 at home to Paris St Germain in their round-of-16 first-leg match and had talisman Paul Pogba sent off late in the game on Tuesday (Feb 12).
Second half goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe gave the impressive French side a clear advantage ahead of the return in Paris on March 6, and Pogba's dismissal for a second yellow card in the 89th minute makes the task even harder.
It was United's first defeat under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since he took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, and in many ways, it was a reality check after 10 wins in 11 games domestically for the Norwegian.
United made a highly aggressive start to the game, but too often, their forwards chose the wrong option or failed to deliver the right pass, although Marcus Rashford and Pogba both tested PSG's 41-year-old keeper Gianluigi Buffon with near post shots.
Thomas Tuchel's side gradually gained the ascendancy - with Marco Verratti and Marquinhos dominant in midfield - and Mbappe should have hit the target when he was slipped through by Julian Draxler in the 28th minute but fired wide.
United had to play the second half without forwards Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, who picked up injuries, and their night got worse in the 53rd when Kimpembe ghosted in unattended at the back post to volley home a corner from Angel Di Maria.
Former United winger Di Maria, booed from the outset by sections of the crowd, had the last laugh when he collected a fine pass from Marquinhos and set up Mbappe for the second goal.
The Argentine broke down the left and delivered a low cross which was expertly turned in, first time, by 20-year-old France World Cup winner Mbappe who showed lightning speed to get ahead of the United defence.
A disappointing night for United got worse when midfielder Pogba was sent off for a second booking after a foul on Dani Alves.

Spurs living the European dream

Spurs living the European dream

LONDON • Tottenham's casualty list makes for grim reading.
Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and Harry Winks and Serge Aurier are all injured. There are doubts over Moussa Sissoko and Jan Vertonghen. And, crucially, Son Heung-min is suspended.
But, ahead of the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with Ajax today, Mauricio Pochettino believes his injury-hit squad can "go to infinity and beyond".
Having upset the odds to end Manchester City's quest for an unprecedented quadruple, the Spurs manager insisted at his pre-match press conference yesterday that their strength as a collective can overcome Ajax's talented group of rising stars at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Argentinian, who has led the north London club to the last four of the Champions League for the first time, is relishing being among European football's elite after cracking rarefied territory.
He said: "To be in a Champions League semi-final is something I dreamed about. You need to settle your dreams.
"The chance to play a semi-final for Tottenham has not happened often (their last appearance at this stage was in the 1962 European Cup).

RARING TO GO
To be in a Champions League semi-final is something I dreamed about. You need to settle your dreams...
It is impossible to be tired, impossible to not be excited to play. I am sure there is no doubt we will have the energy for 90 minutes.
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, on preparing his side for their semi-final.

"We are in a circumstance that is not going to change and we must be ready.
"It is impossible to be tired, impossible to not be excited to play. I am sure there is no doubt we will have the energy for 90 minutes."
However, while Pochettino's stretched team were slipping to a sixth defeat in their last 10 Premier League games to West Ham on Saturday, surrendering their unbeaten record at their new ground, Ajax have had a full week to rest as the Dutch league calendar for the weekend was postponed to allow them extra time to prepare.
While Son's ban means Pochettino is robbed of another goal threat, already diminished through Kane's absence, he remains confident their teamwork can compensate for a perceived lack of firepower.
The 47-year-old said: "The point is that we arrive where we are now because we were a team and we are going to be a team.
"I don't care who is going to score. Always, it's an issue to not have all the players fit but, in front of any name, was the team, the collective."
Pochettino, though, will be keenly aware Ajax, who are also enjoying their own footballing renaissance with their first semi-final appearance in 22 years, "have no fear of anyone".
The Dutch outfit are gunning for the treble - last achieved by the 1972 Johan Cryuff-led team - they top the Eredivisie table on goal difference from PSV Eindhoven and play Willem II in next month's Dutch Cup final.
Yet the Champions League remains their main "objective" as Erik ten Hag's players want to write themselves into the club's folklore before the team get inevitably broken up in the summer.
Although Ajax's remarkable progression from the qualifying rounds has come at a price - Frenkie de Jong has agreed a summer blockbuster move to Barcelona - while captain Matthijs de Ligt, Hakim Ziyech and David Neres are set to follow him out of the exit door, Andre Onana feels lifting their fifth European Cup and their first since 1995 would be the perfect send-off.
The Cameroon international, himself a Barcelona target, told Agence France-Presse: "Not just for the goal in and of itself, but for us, because after this season, there will be a lot of players who will leave.
"It is important for us to do something big. If that means winning the treble, that will be simply beautiful."

Football: Liverpool restate Premier League credentials as Arsenal end Man United run

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool cut Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League to a single point on Sunday (March 10) as Manchester United slipped to their first domestic defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Arsenal.
Chelsea, also in the hunt for the Champions League qualification spots, needed a last-gasp equaliser from Eden Hazard to earn 1-1 draw against Wolves.
A disappointing run of results has badly dented Liverpool's bid for a first English league title since 1990 and fans' nerves were jangling after they fell behind against struggling Burnley at Anfield on Sunday.
But Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane both scored twice as Jurgen Klopp's team battled back to win 4-2, lifting them to 73 points, one behind Pep Guardiola's City, who saw off Watford on Saturday.
"The message from today is that nobody gets rid of us," said a defiant Klopp, whose team had won just two of their previous six Premier League matches.
"We had the perfect mixture of fighting the opponent and playing football.
"All we have to do is make sure that we stay in this really interesting competition on top of the table. We have no problem with confidence, we're in a good moment."

Tottenham's third defeat in four Premier League matches on Saturday has thrown the race for the top four - the passport to the Champions League - wide open.
United travelled to the Emirates Stadium brimming with confidence after their astonishing Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.
Solskjaer had won 13 and drawn two of his previous 15 league and cup fixtures since succeeding the sacked Jose Mourinho in mid-December but they fell behind in the 12th minute.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RACE

Granit Xhaka's strike from distance swerved through the air to wrong-foot United goalkeeper David De Gea.
Both teams went close thereafter, with Fred hitting a post and Romelu Lukaku guilty of wasting some gilt-edged chances but the home side doubled their lead midway through the second half when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the penalty spot after Fred was penalised for bringing down Alexandre Lacazette.
Arsenal's 2-0 victory lifted Unai Emery's side into fourth, just one point behind north London rivals Spurs and meant they leapfrogged United in the process as they target a return to the Champions League after two seasons away from Europe's top club competition.
"We created so many more chances today than when we beat them in the FA Cup," said Solskjaer.
"Sometimes it happens, we hit the woodwork twice and had five very big chances ourselves. The referee will be disappointed when he sees it as I don't think it is a penalty.
"We just had to go for it towards the end, but we were not really at it and it is one of those days where you have to dust yourselves down from."
The win was soured by an incident in which a fan ran onto the pitch and appeared to bump into Chris Smalling after the spot-kick - it followed an incident in the earlier Championship game, when Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish was punched by a pitch invader during the match against Birmingham.
Earlier, Hazard came to Chelsea's rescue in injury time, firing in from long range to grab a point against Wolves at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea enjoyed the bulk of the possession but Wolves took the lead through Raul Jimenez in the 56th minute with their first shot on goal after an incisive counter-attack and looked on track for an impressive win until Hazard struck.
Chelsea remain in sixth place, on 57 points, but manager Maurizio Sarri is confident his team can secure Champions League qualification.
City beat Watford 3-1 on Saturday thanks to Raheem Sterling's 13-minute hat-trick but Spurs, on the fringes of the title race just two weeks ago, slumped to their third Premier League defeat in just four games against Southampton.
There were also wins on Saturday for Brighton, Cardiff, Bournemouth, Leicester and Newcastle.

PARIS (REUTERS) - Edinson Cavani missed a stoppage-time penalty as Paris St Germain continued their stuttering end to the season with a 1-1 Ligue 1 draw at home to Nice, with Neymar notching his 50th goal for the club.
The visitors took the lead early in the second half through Ignatius Ganago before the Brazilian equalised from the penalty spot.
PSG were then awarded a second spot kick late on following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, but Walter Benitez saved Cavani's effort.
Thomas Tuchel's side have now won just one of their last seven games in all competitions, losing four and drawing two.
Despite the recent slump, PSG secured the Ligue 1 title last month and remain 17 points clear at the top of the table, while Nice are seventh on 52 points.
Patrick Vieira's side took the lead within a minute of the second half kicking off when Ganago latched onto a long ball from Dante and smashed an angled half-volley into the roof of the net.
Nice were inches away from a second just before the hour mark when the lively Youcef Atal skipped to the byline and cut a low cross to Allan Saint-Maximin on the edge of the six-yard box, but his finish came back off the crossbar.
The visitors were made to pay for their wastefulness less than a minute later when Patrick Burner brought down Angel Di Maria to concede a penalty which Neymar rolled in for his first league goal since January, following a lengthy injury lay-off.
The former Barcelona forward reached the landmark of 50 goals in just 57 games for the French club.
PSG had a golden chance to take the three points when they were awarded another penalty for Dante's late challenge on Neymar, but Cavani's tame shot was parried by Benitez.

Football: Newcastle get extra-time win over Blackburn, Stoke fall to Shrewsbury in FA Cup 3rd-round replays

LONDON (REUTERS) - Newcastle beat Blackburn Rovers 4-2 after extra time, while Championship side Stoke City threw away a two-goal lead as they suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat by third-tier Shrewsbury Town in English FA Cup third-round replays on Tuesday (Jan 15).
Newcastle fans, who had seen their side narrowly escape defeat in the home match with Championship team Blackburn, were given some respite from their top-flight struggles with a replay win against their fellow six-time FA Cup winners at Ewood Park.
Rafa Benitez's much-changed side with a youthful streak had looked set to coast through when Sean Longstaff's deflected shot put them ahead after 56 seconds and Callum Roberts volleyed home a second four years since his only other Newcastle appearance.
But Blackburn hit back through Adam Armstrong, a former Newcastle player and lifelong fan of the Magpies, and Darragh Lenihan's header before half-time.
When the tie went into extra time, Bradley Dack missed a great chance to put Blackburn ahead before goals from Joselu, who should have been ruled offside, and Ayoze Perez earned Newcastle a home tie with fellow top-flight side Watford.
Benitez praised his team's commitment but was left counting the cost of the victory with defenders Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles suffering injuries.
There appeared no hope that Shrewsbury, 18th in League One, would follow the third-round giant-killings that had been dished out by Newport County, Oldham Athletic and Barnet, but against the odds they were the latest underdogs to snarl.
Tyrese Campbell, son of former Everton striker Kevin, scored twice in the first half for second-tier Stoke but three goals in the last 20 minutes for the Shrews served up another surprise.
James Bolton's 20m strike began the fightback in the 71st minute before a penalty from Fejiri Okenabirhie and an 81st-minute shot from Josh Laurent completed the fightback.
It earned Shrewsbury a glamour fourth-round home tie with their neighbours, Premier League outfit Wolves.
In Tuesday's other replay, struggling Championship team Sheffield Wednesday came through another tough test at in-form third-tier side Luton Town, winning 1-0 with an Atdhe Nuhiu goal straight after the interval.
The Owls' reward is a fourth-round trip to Premier League giants Chelsea.

Football: Man City crush Watford 6-0 to complete treble in style

LONDON (REUTERS) - Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City crushed Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday (May 18) to become the first team to win the English treble of league championship and both domestic cups in spectacular style.
The victory matched the competition's record final win - set when Bury beat Derby County 116 years ago - and was a fair reflection of yet another command performance by one of the best teams in the history of the English game.
Coming after they retained the Premier League title last week and won the League Cup in a penalty shootout over Chelsea, City's sixth FA Cup triumph made them the eighth team to win the prized League and FA Cup double and first since Chelsea in 2010.
"It was an incredible final for us and we have finished an incredible year," City manager Pep Guardiola told the BBC.
"To all the people at the club a big congratulations, especially the players because they are the reason why we have won these titles."
City led 2-0 at halftime through David Silva and Sterling and effectively sealed the deal when Kevin de Bruyne came off the bench to smash in the third after 61 minutes.
Gabriel Jesus slotted the fourth before Sterling, who was brought up in Wembley, took centre stage with two more in the last 10 minutes to becoming the first player to score an FA Cup final hat-trick since Stan Mortensen in 1953 when Blackpool beat Bolton 4-3 in the "Matthews Final".

"I grew up here and saw this stadium get built. It's a massive dream come true to win trophies here," Sterling said.
"It shows what the manager is building here. He said we needed to get the mentality right and we did that and did it exceptionally well.
"It's been a long season with the World Cup as well but everyone has been on their A-game and come through."
Other than one early chance for Roberto Pereyra Watford never looked remotely capable of ending their 30-year winless run against City in their second appearance in the final having lost to Everton in 1984.

LONG SHOT

It always looked a long shot for them to deliver a classic Cup upset. City had beaten Watford in the teams' last 10 meetings, scoring 32 goals in the process and conceding six while Watford's last win in the fixture came in 1989 in the old Second Division.
The underdogs did have the first clear chance after 11 minutes when Gerard Deulofeu broke and set up Pereyra on the edge of the box but Ederson flew off his line to save with his foot.
Other than that, they spent most of the first half camped deep in their own half and there was an air of inevitability when City struck after 26 minutes as diminutive duo Silva and Sterling won headers against big Watford defenders, allowing Silva to seize on the loose ball and fire past Heurelho Gomes.
They doubled the lead in the 38th minute when Bernardo Silva chipped a perfectly-weighted diagonal ball beyond the flailing Gomes for Jesus, starting ahead of Sergio Aguero, to steer back goalwards and almost over the line before Sterling lashed it into the net.
Watford had trailed Wolves 2-0 in the semi-final before coming back to win 3-2 in extra-time and though they started the second half with more attacking intent, hope was extinguished when City broke at pace, Sterling rolling the ball to De Bruyne who throw Gomes with a dummy before drilling the ball low into the net.
Watford, too late, threw men forward and were exposed when Jesus broke from his own half to tuck the ball under Gomes to make it 4-0 and Bernardo Silva was the provider again as Sterling arrived at the back post to smash in the fifth.
Local boy Sterling fittingly finished things off with his third three minutes from time.
It was a good result for Wolverhampton Wanderers too as they will now qualify for the Europa league via their seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

Football: Injured Ronaldo expects to return in one or two weeks

LISBON (REUTERS) - Cristiano Ronaldo does not think the injury which forced him out of Portugal's match against Serbia on Monday (March 25) is overly serious and he told reporters he expects to return to action in one or two weeks.
Ronaldo went off in the first half of the Euro 2020 qualifier with an apparent hamstring injury. The match ended 1-1.
"I'll know more in 24 or 48 hours," he told reporters.
"It happens, it's football. If you go out in the rain you get wet... I'm calm, I'll be back in one or two weeks." His club Juventus later said in a statement that the 34-year-old had undergone exams in Portugal which showed "an apparent minor injury to his right thigh flexors".
"His condition will be monitored and will be subjected to new investigations to define the resumption of competitive activity," it said.
A long absence would be a blow to Juve, who signed Ronaldo last year to boost their chances of winning the Champions League. Juventus travel to face Ajax Amsterdam in their quarter-final first leg on April 10 with the return six days later.
Both Ronaldo and Portugal coach Fernando Santos said the referee had apologised to them for not awarding them a penalty for handball in the second half.

The referee initially gave the spot kick but then changed his mind. Video assistant referees (VAR) are not used in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
"It was very clear, the referee should have given it," said Ronaldo.
"The linesman was 40 metres away so it seems a bit strange."
Santos said: "We saw the incident in the dressing room afterwards and neither we nor he had any doubt - it was a penalty... He apologised."

Backline conundrum for Arsenal's Emery in Wolves' lair

Backline conundrum for Arsenal's Emery in Wolves' lair

LONDON • Unai Emery is faced with a defensive dilemma that could make or break Arsenal's hopes of a top-four finish in their Premier League campaign.
The Gunners travel to Wolves today having missed a chance on tightening their grip on a top-four finish ahead of at least two of Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United - undermined by a 3-2 defeat at home to Crystal Palace last Sunday.
Arsenal were extremely poor defensively that day. Two goals were from badly defended set pieces while the other was the result of an extraordinary individual error by Shkodran Mustafi.
Manager Emery had opted to rest a number of players after a win at Napoli that had seen the Gunners into the Europa League semi-finals.
Now, after that plan backfired, the Spaniard must decide whether to keep the three-man backline that allows Mesut Ozil to flourish in an advanced midfield position behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, or play safe with a traditional back four.
Arsenal won 1-0 at Watford in their most recent away outing with a back four and switched to one at half-time against Palace.
It would be no surprise, therefore, if Nacho Monreal came back on the left of the defence and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who came off the bench at the break on Sunday, was restored to the right.
Emery's biggest headache though is to decide if the veteran Laurent Koscielny can carry on playing at a time when Mustafi cannot be relied on.

Sunday was not the first time Mustafi's errors had been costly - an attempt to shield the ball from Wilfried Zaha merely allowed the Palace forward a free run on goal - yet no Gunner in any position has been picked more in the Premier League this season than the Germany international.
Fortunately, Sokratis Papasthopoulos has served a two-game ban and is expected to go straight back in the team.
The inexperienced Konstantinos Mavropanos is another option and started against Watford and Palace but was substituted before the hour mark against the former and lasted just 45 minutes in last weekend's match with the Eagles.
Emery, whose fifth-placed team are a point behind Chelsea with a game in hand, said: "We can be frustrated (with the loss to Palace), but tomorrow stand up and be ready for the game against Wolves.
"It is going to be very difficult, but it is in our hands."

Trent Alexander-Arnold may be a multi-millionaire footballer but the Liverpool defender knows not all are fortunate enough to enjoy the same trappings of success.
The 20-year-old took time out to give back to the city's community on Christmas Day. He helped light up the festive season for 60 families by volunteering at An Hour For Others, a charity that helps Liverpudlians from underprivileged backgrounds, said the BBC.
The player, an ambassador for the charity, paid for the dinner and bought presents for the children. He later tweeted that "seeing the looks on the kids' faces today is something I'll never forget", while the organisation called him a "diamond".
