Football: Liverpool's defence stands tall ahead of Arsenal test

LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool's push for a first English title in 29 years faces another test when they host Arsenal on Saturday (Dec 29) but the evidence suggests their formidable defence could be their key to ending a frustrating wait for a championship in the Premier League era.
The roar that swept like wildfire around the ground when Manchester City's defeat to Leicester City was confirmed on Wednesday told its own story - Anfield really is beginning to believe.
For while Juergen Klopp's unbeaten Liverpool were easing to a 4-0 win over Newcastle United to bring the dream of that elusive 19th English title into sharper focus, champions City were suffering a second straight defeat in less than a week.
So, at halfway, the gap between Liverpool and City, who slipped to third spot, now stands at seven points - and a comparison between their defensive records offers one of the major reasons why.
For Liverpool, boosted by signings of exceptional centre back Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson, have conceded just seven goals in 19 matches this season, 16 less than at the same stage last term.
City, in contrast, have shipped 15 goals and will arrive at Southampton on Sunday without a clean sheet in their previous nine games in all competitions.
Liverpool's attacking prowess has been long admired but full back Trent Alexander-Arnold points to how it now goes hand in hand with defensive stability at Anfield, where they have won eight of their nine league games, conceding just two goals.
"We have shown we're tough to beat and not only that, we're tough to score past. Not many teams come here and can score past us," the 20-year-old told the club website.
"We have kept a lot of clean sheets, especially at home. It's something we pride ourselves on as defenders and throughout the whole team.
"That's the foundation we've got to lay, then provide the balls for the attackers to go and do what they do best, scoring us goals."
Fifth-placed Arsenal were the last team to nick a point from Liverpool in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates last month, but Unai Emery's side have since lost their way, dropping seven points in their last three games on the road.
An error from Stephan Lichtsteiner cost Arsenal dearly as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday.
Arsenal were without four centre back options at the Amex Stadium and Emery will hope Nacho Monreal and Shkodran Mustafi could return for the weekend's clash.

CITY DEFENSIVE WOES

After conceding five goals in back-to-back defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester, Man City manager Pep Guardiola is also concerned about his team's defensive discipline.
"We started the season with clean sheets, we conceded five goals in I don't know how many games. It was incredible how stable it was," Guardiola said.
"But right now we are conceding goals and it's one of the big issues. We have a specific quality of players.
"We have players to play with a ball and it's not a team built to just defend a lot of the time. But you have to make that effort to change that dynamic."
Tottenham Hotspur stepped up their title drive this week, scoring 11 goals while defeating Everton and Bournemouth to move into second place, and they could wrap up the year with a sixth straight league win when hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will look to continue his 100 per cent winning start as they take on Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Following a 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town, United remain sixth, eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who visit Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Football: Last-gasp Mitrovic earns Fulham 1-0 win over Huddersfield

LONDON (REUTERS) - Fulham boosted their Premier League survival hopes as Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a stoppage-time winner to give them a dramatic 1-0 victory over bottom team Huddersfield Town at Craven Cottage on Saturday (Dec 29).
The result lifted Claudio Ranieri's Fulham side one place to 18th on 14 points from 20 games, two more than Burnley who host West Ham United on Sunday. Huddersfield remain stuck on 10 points after suffering their seventh successive defeat.
Having had a bullet of a header saved by Jonas Lossl, who also kept out an Aboubakar Kamara penalty, Mitrovic delighted the home fans after taking a Ryan Sessegnon pass in his stride and firing it past the visiting keeper.
The Serbia striker was emotional and also in a forgiving mood after French forward Kamara, who won the penalty, snatched the ball away from Tom Cairney and Mitrovic only to direct a tame spot-kick at Lossl.
"Last time I said I am so unhappy I want to cry, today I want to say I am so happy I want to cry," said Mitrovic.
"For the penalty, we had a small argument and I think it is my job for penalties. He (Kamara) did not think like this but I respect that. I have done the same in the past. I don't have a problem with this, he missed and that is part of football."
Ranieri, who breathed a huge sigh of relief after seeing the Cottagers chalk up only their second league win in the last 17 games, was less forgiving about Kamara's disobedience.
"I said to Aboubakar Kamara to leave the ball to Aleksandar Mitrovic, he is the man who shoots the penalties," he said.
Huddersfield had the upper hand in the first half but Fulham always looked more likely to score, although they only had a pair of harmless Mitrovic headers to show for their efforts.
Lossl looked like the game's hero after denying Mitrovic and Kamara in the second half, the latter being booed by the home fans every time he touched the ball in the closing stages.
But just when it seemed Kamara would be left to rue his ill-judged penalty miss, Mitrovic spared his blushes with a superb finish after Fulham nearly fell behind in a climactic finale.
Huddersfield had launched a promising raid and, after Fulham cleared the danger, the home side engineered a quick breakaway move with Sessegnon feeding Mitrovic to rifle the ball home with a first-time shot from just inside the penalty area.
"It is a big three points, we kept another clean sheet and that is a big improvement for us," added Mitrovic. "We need to carry on winning games and taking points."

Klopp not obsessed with leaving storied Reds legacy

Klopp not obsessed with leaving storied Reds legacy

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has said he is only interested in being judged by God and not the trophies he wins as Liverpool manager.
The Reds remain in pursuit of the Premier League title and the Champions League, where they face Porto in the quarter-finals, as they look to land the first trophy of his tenure.
While the German felt Wednesday's Champions League last-16 victory at Bayern Munich had put the club back on the map of world football, being part of that rise, and not personal glory, was the only job satisfaction he needed.
Dismissing the idea that his reign will be measured on silverware alone, he said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "You can't imagine how little I'm interested in that.
"I never thought about myself in that way. My job is to do everything I can to help the team be as successful as possible. I'm not searching to be remembered in 50 years.
"For me, it's no pressure, only opportunity. I love what I do, I have a fantastic team out there, and that's all that I need to be a happy person.

FOCUS ON US, NOT THEM
Just play that game (at Fulham) and stay in the same mood like we always are - confident but greedy, aggressive, direct, all what you need in a football game. Stay in that mood and everything will be fine. Whether City have a game in hand, it's not that important.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, egging his team on against relegation-threatened Fulham.

"I respect a lot the desire of all the people and the players, and I can be really part of that, I can be part of that dream. But it's not for me at the end, it's for the people. I am not interested in who judges me. What other people say about me, I couldn't be less interested."
Despite having reached the Champions League final last term, Klopp felt the Bayern win was "a big step" in his side's development, although he urged his players to stay "completely concentrated on Fulham" ahead of their Premier League trip to Craven Cottage tomorrow.
A win will give Liverpool a two-point lead at the top of the table, with Manchester City not playing in the league owing to their FA Cup last-eight tie at Swansea.
He added: "Now don't think about what happens afterwards or whatever. Just play that game (at Fulham) and stay in the same mood like we always are - confident but greedy, aggressive, direct, all what you need in a football game.
"Stay in that mood and everything will be fine. Whether City have a game in hand, it's not that important. We just want to win our game at the weekend... we need to think about winning our games only."
"We haven't struggled psychologically with them ahead of us or us ahead of them, it's (about) being really focused on the football game. Until the end of the season, let's play football."
Although the Cottagers, 13 points from safety, are expected to pose little danger to Klopp's team, he will have to shuffle his midfield around with an ankle injury ruling out skipper Jordan Henderson, while Naby Keita will undergo a late fitness test having missed the Bayern game.

Fandis are a happy family

Fandis are a happy family

Fandi Ahmad was a proud coach and father, after watching his Singapore Under-22 side deliver a composed 3-0 Merlion Cup win over the Philippines last night with his two sons among the goalscorers.
The semi-final win sends the Young Lions into tomorrow's final against Thailand, who beat Indonesia 2-1 earlier at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday.
"They both just came back and it's good that they helped the team," said Fandi, 57, of his sons, who are both already full internationals. They're team players."
"We had some restrictions so we couldn't play Ikhsan. But when he came in he made a lot of difference, (creating) openings for others.
"I'm very happy for Irfan and Ikhsan, this shows they are at a good level. Hopefully, they can spur the other boys to work harder as well."
Given striker Ikhsan, 20, had arrived from Norway on Tuesday and was jet-lagged, it was no surprise that Fandi opted to bench his younger son.
Despite the absence of Ikhsan, who has netted four goals in 11 games for Norwegian second-tier club Raufoss this season, the Republic took the lead in the first half through Amiruldin Asraf.
The Home United forward stole possession from defender Pete Forrosuelo in the penalty area and easily scored past goalkeeper Michael Asong in the 26th minute.
The hosts looked threatening on set pieces and captain Irfan, 21, was an obvious danger with his 1.88m frame. The centre-back almost scored in the 40th minute but his downward header hit the upright.
Fandi's eldest son made no mistake, though, in the 62nd minute and guided his header past Asong to double Singapore's lead.
Six minutes later, Ikhsan, a half-time substitute, completed a swift counter-attack with a simple tap-in after midfielder Daniel Goh crossed from the right.
Ikhsan was taken off in the 79th minute to preserve him for the Thais, who will pose a stiffer challenge than the Filipinos.
Fandi said: "We are very happy with the results and we get to the final. The beginning stages, we didn't play to our plan and, some of the boys, you could see the jitters in them, especially the younger ones.
"I'm very happy that after the first 20 minutes we picked up our game and started playing football and creating chances from the set pieces, which are our strength.
"But we need to improve on our decision-making and, when we're under pressure, we tend to clear the ball unnecessarily. We should be more composed with the ball.
"Defensively we're still not that tight because we don't really train together, so that needs work."
Man of the Match Irfan added that their time in Mongolia, where Singapore had encouraging performances at the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers in March, helped them improve.
"Our players are more experienced now after coming back from Mongolia. I think we fought even harder and we managed to keep cool and play football."

Football: Man City's De Bruyne upbeat as he bids to put injuries behind him

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Kevin De Bruyne's timely return to action for Manchester City is a major boost for Pep Guardiola as his team brace for a punishing programme over the festive period.
The Belgium international, who has been limited to just 96 minutes of league football so far this season, started the midweek League Cup quarter-final against Leicester, which City won on penalties.
He completed 70 minutes in only his second outing since injuring his knee for a second time this season in a League Cup tie with Fulham on Nov 1 and scored City's goal in the 1-1 draw.
"I've been out so long, so to play 70 minutes is a really good sign for me personally," he told the club's official website. "I feel a little bit stiff but I'm happy to contribute again."
City's home match in the Premier League against Crystal Palace on Saturday (Dec 22) is the first game in a run of six matches in 16 days in three competitions so Guardiola will be desperate to have all his major stars at his disposal.
In more good news for the City boss, Sergio Aguero also returned to action in midweek after being out since late November with a groin problem.
But it is the pending return to full fitness of De Bruyne that will most excite City supporters, even if a record of 14 wins, two draws and a loss from their opening 17 league games hardly suggests the team has struggled in his absence.
De Bruyne put in a huge effort last season for his club, featuring in 52 league and cup games for City and was named their player of the season.
He also faced a punishing international schedule, which culminated in Belgium finishing third at the World Cup - the sheer number of games for club and country sparked concerns from Guardiola that De Bruyne had not had enough rest during the summer.
When he picked up a ligament injury in his right knee in training just one game into the new season such fears seemed well-founded - he then hurt his left knee against Fulham soon after returning to action.
The player, however, believes he was the victim of bad luck.
"I played the most of anyone last year - in the whole world," said De Bruyne. "And I played the World Cup without a problem.
"I think the most important thing is having a summer break - if you have that you can feel OK but there is always a time in someone's career where you feel a bit less.
"But I felt all right, it was just a shame that when I came back after one week I was out for two-and-a-half months. I was happy to come back and worked really hard but after three games it happened again."
The 27-year-old is upbeat despite his disrupted season and is preparing to help second-placed City in their title defence.
"There's nothing I can do - it was two accidents," he said. "I'm happy with my body because I know I have no problems with muscles. They were both just accidents, the second time also. I felt my knee and it pops, so you just work hard and try to be back as soon as possible."

Football: Man City go top of the EPL with win at Everton, Guardiola says result 'is a lesson to never give up'

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Champions Manchester City went top of the Premier League with a disciplined 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday (Feb 6) that saw them leapfrog title rivals Liverpool on goal difference.
Aymeric Laporte headed the opener just before the interval and substitute Gabriel Jesus sealed the victory deep in stoppage time for City, who returned to the league's summit for the first time since Dec 8.
Both City and Liverpool have 62 points, but Pep Guardiola's side have played one game more than the Merseysiders, who have drawn their last two encounters and host Bournemouth on Saturday.
With Tottenham Hotspur on 57 points, the title race has turned into a genuine three-way tussle and while City rarely sparkled against Everton, it was a key win in a busy week in which they had already beaten Arsenal and host Chelsea on Sunday.
"Four or five days ago, we could have been seven points behind, it is a lesson to never give up," said Guardiola.
"Now we have an incredible test on Sunday against Chelsea. I don't know how far we will get, maybe we will die in the road, but we are trying.
"We have played one more game than Liverpool, it's good to be top but Liverpool (still) has a game at Old Trafford," he added, referring to Liverpool's match at Manchester United on Feb 24.
The game against Everton was a re-arranged fixture caused by City's advance to the League Cup final and highlighted the difficulties to come for a side still involved in four competitions as there were some signs of weariness in their display.
Everton manager Marco Silva left two of his main creative players, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison, on the bench and opted for three central midfielders - a tactic that worked well as his side closed down City and limited their control of possession.
Yet after all that good work, it was Everton's sloppiness at set-pieces which cost them yet again.
David Silva curled in a free kick from the left and Laporte was somehow left unattended to head home from close range.
The goal was the 17th conceded by Everton from a set-piece in all competitions this season - prompting further questions about Silva's insistence on zonal marking.
After the break, ninth-placed Everton, who had been well beaten at home by Wolves on Saturday, stuck at their task well, but for all their graft, they rarely threatened City's lead.
The home side did get a sniff of an opening when Kyle Walker, deep in his own half, gave the ball away to substitute Richarlison, but the Brazilian's pass towards Cenk Tosun was over-hit and the danger passed.
It was a sign of City's strength in depth that their substitutes combined for the second goal deep in stoppage time with Kevin De Bruyne playing Jesus in on goal.
Although the Brazilian's shot was blocked by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, he reacted quickly to head home the loose ball.
"Everyone (helped) win the game," said Jesus. "We know that it is going to be difficult. We want to play well in every game and at the end of the season we want the title," he said.

Football: Llorente hits hat-trick as Spurs crush Tranmere 7-0 in FA Cup

BIRKENHEAD, England (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur's Spanish striker Fernando Llorente struck a hat-trick as the Premier League side crushed League Two (fourth tier) Tranmere Rovers 7-0 in the opening game of the FA Cup third round at Prenton Park on Friday (Jan 4).
Spurs chalked up their biggest ever competitive away win after defender Serge Aurier broke the deadlock with a deflected shot from the edge of the area five minutes before the break to breach a Tranmere side who had competed well in the first half.
It was a very different story after the break with Llorente, restricted to a place on the bench for much of this season, slotting home from close range after Son Heung-min burst down the right and delivered a perfect low cross.
Right back Aurier then added his second goal, driving the ball home after excellent creative work from Son.
South Korean forward Son himself made it 4-0 with a solo run from inside his own half, without a challenge from Tranmere's defenders, which ended with a clinical finish.
Tottenham's promising 18-year-old midfielder Oliver Skipp then delivered a wonderful through ball for Llorente who slipped the ball home to make it five in the 71st minute.
A minute later the former Athletic Bilbao striker completed his hat-trick, poking home a low cross from Lucas Moura, and within minutes Mauricio Pochettino had taken him off, adding to Tranmere's troubles by bringing Harry Kane off the bench.
The England captain added the seventh by cleverly flicking the ball over goalkeeper Scott Davies after a defence-splitting pass from Dele Alli.

Win over Watford more like draw: Ole

Win over Watford more like draw: Ole

LONDON • While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was able to mark his first game as Manchester United's full-time manager with a victory, he was far from impressed by the "slow and sloppy" performance by his players.
But, after the 2-1 Premier League win over Watford on Saturday, courtesy of goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, the 46-year-old admitted that despite the below-par display, he would "take the three points" as the game had been "a potential banana skin".
The Norwegian, whose Red Devils' record now stands at 15 victories in 20 matches in all competitions, said: "We came away with a win, which is great but everyone knows we can perform better.
"I'm happy with the result, if not the performance. It was more a draw, performance-wise.
"You could see we have had players out with injuries in the international break and not been able to train them.
"It didn't really feel any different for me because the focus is always the next game, but we as a team felt it was a new start after the disappointment of Wolves (the FA Cup quarter-final defeat), it was almost like the first game of the league."
The former United striker also claimed his team, who moved back into fourth place ahead of Arsenal, who play Newcastle tonight, "feel like we are in the driver's seat" for a Champions League spot.

LIKELY SWITCH FOR POGBA
Paul has been away (on international duty), played two games with France. A bit deeper (role) for them so that is something we may have to think about to get him more involved.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, after his first match as Manchester United's full-time manager, pondering over midfielder Paul Pogba's position in future games.

He added: "There are four very good teams challenging for two places, but we have given ourselves a good chance."
Solskjaer was greeted with a huge banner from the Stretford End as he emerged from the tunnel at Old Trafford, but it was clear from the start that the Hornets had travelled with the intention of spoiling Solskjaer's party.
David de Gea was the busier of the two goalkeepers, while Paul Pogba could not get into the game, leaving his boss to ponder over his position in future games.
He added: "Paul is important for us and we couldn't keep the ball today. We had 50-50 possession at home, you are a bit disappointed with that.
"Paul has been away (on international duty), played two games with France. A bit deeper (role) for them so that is something we may have to think about to get him more involved.
"I thought Rashy (Rashford) was fantastic, he gave us the energy the others lacked, the two centre-backs and Luke Shaw were excellent as well."
His opposite number, Javi Gracia, was also annoyed after failing to take advantage of a "very good performance".
Lamenting "the bad result" and their inability to add to Abdoulaye Doucoure's stoppage-time strike, he said: "We didn't take the chances we created in the first half.
"We dominated the game, had more possession, created more chances. But we didn't score (more) and they punished us. I'm a little bit frustrated."

Football: Messi uncertainty does not affect Madrid 'Clasico' plans, says Solari

MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari hopes Barcelona captain Lionel Messi is fit to face his side in Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final first leg for the good of the game - but he added that the Argentine's presence would not affect his game plan.
It is unclear whether Messi, the all-time top scorer in Spanish football as well as in the 'Clasico', will be fit for the game after ending Barca's 2-2 draw with Valencia on Saturday with a knock. His club have not given an injury update on him.
"It's always good when the best players get to play every game, but whether or not he plays will not influence the way we prepare for the game at all," Solari told a news conference on Tuesday (Feb 5).
Messi was out with a broken arm the last time Spain's two biggest clubs met, back in October. But Barca barely missed their talismanic forward, thrashing Real 5-1 in what proved to be Julen Lopetegui's last game in charge before Solari took over.
Real, who are third in the La Liga standings but cut their gap behind leaders Barca to eight points after beating Alaves on Sunday, are looking to end Barcelona's run of four consecutive Copa del Rey triumphs and reach the final of the competition for the first time since 2014, when they beat the Catalans 2-1.
Barca's French forward Ousmane Dembele is unlikely to be fit for the game, as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury.
Solari meanwhile has practically a full squad at his disposal, with only little-used defender Jesus Vallejo unavailable.

"It's harder to pick a team when everyone is available, but the important thing is that every player puts their talent, ability and effort at the service of the team," added the coach.

Football: 'Dreamer' Sarri defiant despite Chelsea struggles

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri arrived at Chelsea hailed for his spectacular style of play but seven months later the beleaguered Blues boss is on thin ice after responding to his team's troubles by stubbornly refusing to change his ways.
On a freezing Friday (Feb 1) at Chelsea's snow-covered training centre outside London, Sarri responded to reports he is in danger of being sacked by mounting a defiant defence of his philosophy.
Tensions have mounted over Sarri's misfiring tactics and his public criticism of his stars after poor results.
A humiliating 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Wednesday triggered an avalanche of abuse for the Italian.
For Sarri, the crisis is in stark contrast to the widespread praise that greeted his appointment, with his Napoli teams the darlings of the purists for their attacking game-plan.
"Napoli are spectacular and his brand of football is a joy to watch," Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said of Sarri.
Those summer compliments are now a distant memory, yet Sarri remains adamant his style will get results eventually.
"Why? First of all I want to do well with Plan A. I don't want to change something that doesn't work well at the moment," he told reporters when asked if he would consider changing his tactics.
"I want to see my football played very well. Then we can change something. Everybody knows Barcelona for 10 years because they play their football.
"I am a dreamer. I want to play my football."
Sarri's idealistic dream could become a nightmare unless he turns the tide quickly.
The Blues' worst league defeat for more than 22 years left their bid to qualify for the Champions League under severe threat.
Chelsea have dropped down to fifth place after winning only one of their past four Premier League games and face rock-bottom Huddersfield at Stamford Bridge on Saturday knowing a third successive defeat would be catastrophic.
Sarri had to apologise to an angry fan who confronted him in the car park at Bournemouth before being driven home alone to begin a long, sleepless night analysing exactly what went wrong.
TOUGHER THAN EXPECTED
Claiming he deserves the kind of time granted to Guardiola, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, Sarri said: "In the first season at Liverpool, Klopp was in the middle of the table.
"In England there are three teams above the others, In one the coach arrived five years ago, in one four years ago and in one three years ago.
"They had a plan and were really passionate. The situation for me is very clear."
Although Chelsea have earned a League Cup final date with Manchester City, there has been a growing sense for several months that the 60-year-old has not been able to make his players buy into his "Sarri-ball" method.
Chief among the concerns are his use of Jorginho as the defensive midfielder instead of N'Golo Kante, who had thrived in the position as a title-winner with Chelsea and Leicester.
Yet Sarri insisted nothing could persuade him to ditch that decision.
"Only 20 minutes if I have to defend a result," he said when the idea of restoring Kante to the position was mooted.
"It depends what you want from Jorginho. If you want the last pass he is not adapted. But he is very able to move the ball and build up the action."
Sarri held a 50-minute inquest with his players after the Bournemouth game and was quoted in Italy as saying they did not understand the basics of his approach.
In more conciliatory mood on Friday, he conceded it is down to him to win them over.
"I didn't attack the players, I talked to them because I needed to understand," he said.
"I said probably I am not able to motivate them. If we have some mental problems, the reasons could be the players, or it could be the technical staff.
"It is a part of my job. I want first of all to change the mentality. My football is cooperation. I have to speak to my players."
But, asked if he was finding life in the Premier League tougher than he expected, Sarri tellingly replied: "Probably yes."

Singapore's Akbar is best coach in I-League
Singaporean Akbar Nawas has been named the I-League's best coach after leading Chennai City to their first title earlier this month.
The Indian team swept seven out of 10 categories at the I-League awards and trophy presentation ceremony at the Taj Corramandel in Chennai on Wednesday.
Akbar received the Syed Abdul Rahim Best Coach Award, while Chennai's Spanish imports Roberto Eslava, Nestor Jesus Gordillo and Pedro Manzi were named the league's best defender, midfielder and forward respectively.
With 21 goals, Manzi shared the top-scorer award with Churchill Brothers' Willis Plaza. He was also voted the league's best player.
Akbar and his assistant K. Balagumaran have been credited for transforming Chennai from relegation stragglers last season to champions this year as they reaped the rewards for preaching and practising an attacking style of football.
Akbar, 43, told The Straits Times: "It has been a great season to remember, and the award was made possible because of my players, who did their job on the pitch to win the league.
"After finishing second with Tampines Rovers in Singapore (2016) and Global Cebu in the Philippines (2017), there is huge personal satisfaction in winning the league title with Chennai in India and helping them reach the AFC Champions League qualifiers."

Chennai also received a congratulatory message from Fifa president Gianni Infantino.
In a letter addressed to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), he wrote: "I was delighted to hear that Chennai City FC have been crowned 2018-19 I-League champions. This is, no doubt, the result of effort and hard work, and everybody involved can be proud of this great achievement. I encourage them to continue working with determination and motivation.
"On behalf of the entire football community, I take this opportunity to thank Chennai City FC and your federation for helping spread the positive message of football and foster the practice of this beautiful game that unites us all."
The achievement of Akbar and Balagumaran has not gone unnoticed by the AIFF and the duo are said to be on its radar for the vacant India national coach position.
Akbar admitted that he has been approached by other teams, but he is keen to take Chennai forward in the new 20-team Indian Football League next season that will unify the I-League and the Indian Super League.
"I have received offers and I'm in discussions with my club owner about the future," said Akbar.

LONDON • Fulham were the perfect opponents for a team hoping not to expend unnecessary energy before facing Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United did not have to be at their dashing best yesterday to continue their resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but they still could have scored a hatful as they regained a spot in the top four of the Premier League for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.
They settled for a 3-0 win in the end and Solskjaer was able to keep Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard on the bench before United welcome PSG to Old Trafford for the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Tuesday night.
A brace from Paul Pogba and a sensational solo goal from Anthony Martial were enough for the Premier League's form side, who have picked up 25 points from nine games since replacing Jose Mourinho with Solskjaer in December.
Pogba later fired a warning to the chasing pack that they intend "to stay there", adding: "It feels great. That's what we wanted, since Ole came, the top four.
"We have big games coming up, so it won't be easy. But we put in a good performance as a team.

EYES ON THE PRIZE
We have big games coming up, so it won't be easy. But we put in a good performance as a team. When we need three points, we get the three points.
PAUL POGBA, Manchester United midfielder, looking ahead to the coming run of tough fixtures that will likely determine his team's final position at the end of the season.

"When we need three points, we get the three points. But these big games coming up will determine where we end up. I feel great, the team feels good."
While United's supporters revelled in watching the legendary figure in the dugout mastermind another victory, Fulham's fans booed Claudio Ranieri down the tunnel after the final whistle.
The odds are against the team with the worst defensive record in the division, with 58 goals conceded, pulling off a miraculous escape given that they are seven points adrift of 17th place with 12 games remaining.
Craven Cottage, normally such a genteel place to watch a game of football, was an angry place with fans aiming chants of "You don't know what you're doing" at a manager who appears to have run out of ideas after three months in the job.
Curiously, it was the wind, which made the ball move weirdly in the air, and not their opponents that took United a while to get used to.

But it was not long before Pogba decided it was time to take charge in the middle of the park. The France midfielder's authority on the ball settled his teammates and it soon became clear United had a plan to get Martial running at Denis Odoi.
Pogba has been involved in 13 league goals under Solskjaer, scoring eight and creating five, and he eased United ahead with a powerful strike in the 14th minute.
In the 23rd minute, Martial produced a moment of magic in keeping with United's scintillating counter-attacking traditions. The forward started his run just inside his own half as he ignored Odoi's attempts to bring him down, shimmied past Maxime Le Marchand and opened up his body to curl a lovely shot into the far corner.
They added another when strong work from Romelu Lukaku led to Le Marchand bringing down Juan Mata just inside the box.
Pogba dispatched his penalty with aplomb and United spent the final 25 minutes keeping their powder dry for PSG.
Solskjaer said that while there was a chance his tinkering could have backfired, his footballing philosophy was "if you don't risk, you don't win".
The Norwegian said: "I have to trust the players, I didn't feel there was a problem playing any of them."

Complacent? Not Spurs

Complacent? Not Spurs

Tottenham must not count their chickens before they hatch if they hope to clinch their first Premier League title this term.
Hugo Lloris, captain and goalkeeper of the club whose emblem is the cockerel while a golden one stands atop its White Hart Lane ground, issued the warning before they host a rejuvenated Manchester United tomorrow.
Liverpool lead the league with 54 points from 21 games, champions Manchester City are second on 50, with Spurs third on 48.
"Before we can look ahead of us (at the title), we need to look behind too - there are a few teams," Lloris said at the club's training facility in Enfield yesterday.
"The main thing is to finish in the top four for a third year in a row. We will see where we are at the table in the last 10 games."
A surge from Chelsea (44 points) or Arsenal (41) could threaten their bid for a fourth straight season of lucrative Champions League football. A resurgent United (38), on a four-game winning streak, have also emerged as outsiders for a top-four finish.
Lloris said the most important point of the season has arrived, adding: "February-March-April is the period when you win or lose your chance at the title, so the most important thing is stay focused, and take it game by game."
He knows what it takes; after all, he was the man who led France to World Cup glory in Russia last year.
Spurs have not won a major trophy since the League Cup in 2008. They have reached four Cup semi-finals since he signed from Lyon in 2012 and ended among the Premier League's top three in the last three seasons, including a runner-up finish in 2017.
But he felt the club are on the right path, saying: "My feeling is that we are going in the right way.
"We have so many talented players, we have one of the best managers and we are trying to build something strong and special."
"You cannot get success in one or two seasons, especially if you want to stay at a high level in the long term. Sometimes, it takes longer.
"The main thing is for the players to show their talent and commitment towards the shirt, week in and week out.
"But it's also true that, in football, the only thing people remember are the trophies.
"But it's not too late."
Would a Spurs title come too late for the 32-year-old, one of the club's longest-serving players?
Saying his future is "difficult" to discuss, he said: "I feel really committed, towards the club, people who work in it and the fans. Staying so many years is something very important.
"But you never know, especially in football. I'm only focused on today and tomorrow."

Football: Emery confident of improved Arsenal for Man United after Rennes defeat

RENNES, France (AFP) - Arsenal manager Unai Emery is confident his team can bounce back from their Europa League setback in Rennes when they face a euphoric Manchester United side this weekend.
The Gunners played most of Thursday's (March 7) game with 10 men after Sokratis Papastathopoulos was sent off late in the first half as they threw away an early lead to lose 3-1 in France in their Europa League last 16, first leg.
Alex Iwobi had put them in front, but Rennes took advantage of their extra man to come back and claim a potentially vital two-goal cushion.
The result means they should have their work cut out if they are to progress to the quarter-finals, with the second leg against the Ligue 1 club scheduled for next Thursday.
"The first 40 minutes I think we controlled it, we scored, and we didn't concede many chances to them," said Emery, who accepted his team did not play well after the sending-off.
Benjamin Bourigeaud and Ismaila Sarr scored for Rennes either side of a Nacho Monreal own goal.
"We need to change our performance and I have confidence that we can with our players and with our supporters helping us to give us a big atmosphere."
Before that game, Arsenal entertain United on Sunday in a huge game between two sides battling for a top-four place in the Premier League.
"We are finding fresh players and a different energy for each match, and for Sunday I think it's going to be the same," said Emery, whose side are fifth in the Premier League table, one point behind United in fourth.

"Every player worked a lot and we are going to look forward to the next match, but I know and I am positive for Sunday, that with fresh players with energy, with quality, that we have the possibility to put in a big performance against Manchester United and win against them."
United will head into the game fresh from their stunning 3-1 win away to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday that took them through to the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals.
That result was achieved with a depleted side, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team will also take confidence from the fact they won 3-1 at Arsenal in the FA Cup in January.
"They are in a very good moment but we are together in the table and we played against them one month ago in the FA Cup - we lost 3-1 but I remember we did very good things, we had chances," said Emery.
"We know Sunday is a tough match, an amazing match for everybody, we will be at home with our supporters, and we need a very big performance from each player."
Arsenal will be able to call on Alexandre Lacazette for that game - the French striker is suspended for the two legs against Rennes.
