Hazard's Chelsea future in doubt, Real move mooted
LONDON • Eden Hazard's future at Chelsea seems to be in severe doubt after the forward admitted that he has come to a decision about his next step, with a move to Real Madrid thought to be his preference.
"I know what I am going to do. I have made a decision," Hazard told French radio station RMC, although he did not elaborate.
The interview was recorded two months ago as part of a documentary about his career, but it was only released earlier this week and may colour the context of the guessing games that have continued to follow his every move.
Uncertainty over the 28-year-old's plans has been an unwelcome undercurrent to Chelsea's season.
Hazard has admitted to being torn between staying at Stamford Bridge and the "dream" switch to Real, a club he referred to in October as "the best in the world".
While Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has pressed the Belgium international to make up his mind, saying in December it was "time to decide" the issue, he has also accepted his star player could leave if that was his wish.
"If he wants to go, he has to go," the Italian said last week.
The situation is particularly concerning given that Hazard's contract expires in June 2020 and he is yet to entertain new terms.
If the European champions and Hazard are both open to a deal, then Chelsea are unlikely to stand in his way, although it could take a nine-figure bid to seal his exit.
According to the Evening Standard, the Blues will demand more than £100 million (S$175.3 million) before sanctioning his departure, although Real could include Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic, who is on loan at Stamford Bridge, to sweeten the deal.
Should the blockbuster move take place in the summer, Chelsea will need a big-name replacement, but that player is unlikely to be Barcelona's Philippe Coutinho.
Despite rumours of a return to English football circling the Brazil forward, who has struggled to nail down a starting place in Spain since moving from Liverpool for £142 million last January, Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has put the speculation to bed.
He said: "Are we going to consider the sale of Coutinho? No. It's not (possible), he is very young (26) and we expect a lot from him.
"He plays differently, he knows how we play, we do not want to sell."
THE GUARDIAN

Sarri, whose own future at Chelsea remains in doubt after a tumultuous campaign with Juventus credited with an interest in luring him back to Serie A, admitted he had long known of Hazard's intentions. "As you know, Hazard is a wonderful player, but you have to spend two or three months to understand him as a man," said the Italian.

Football: Arsenal's Ramsey signs four-year Juventus deal

MILAN (AFP) - Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has signed a four-year deal to join Juventus on a free transfer, the Italian champions said on Monday (Feb 11).
The 28-year-old Wales international will arrive in northern Italy on July 1 with his contract running until June 30, 2023.
Juventus said that the club are liable to pay 3.7 million euros (S$5.7 million) by July 10 in the absence of a transfer fee.
Ramsey began his career at Cardiff City, making his his first team debut in 2007 before arriving at Arsenal in July 2008.
Over the past decade he has played 256 Premier League games, scoring 38 top-flight goals, and winning three FA Cup and two Community Shield.
He also had two loan spells at Nottingham Forest in 2010, and back at former club, Cardiff in 2011.
"As well as being recognised as a solid Premier League player, Ramsey brings a wealth of European experience," Juventus said.
Ramsey has 58 caps for Wales, scoring 14 goals, and was a part of the Welsh side that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals.
He becomes the third Welshman to play for Juventus following club legend John Charles and former European Golden Boot winner Ian Rush.

Football: Inter Milan fan dies after clashes at Napoli game

ROME (AFP) - An Inter Milan supporter died on Thursday morning (Dec 27) after being hit by a vehicle during clashes with Napoli fans on Wednesday before the Serie A match between the two teams at the San Siro.
Milan police chief Marcello Cadorna told journalists that the incident happened after around 100 Inter fans attacked Napoli supporters' minibuses with chains and hammers.
Cadorna, himself a former Serie A referee, said that four Napoli fans were injured in the "despicable and absolutely impossible to prevent" attack.
In the ensuing confusion, Inter fan Daniele Belardinelli, 35, was hit by a vehicle, likely a dark SUV and not one of the Napoli minibuses, according to mobile phone footage of the incident, Cadorna said.
Inter fans carried Belardinelli to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries despite being operated on.
"You can't die for a football game," said far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, adding that he would summon fan organisations for talks in January.
Police arrested three Inter fans over the violence, Cadorna said.
Inter Milan won the match 1-0, as Napoli had two players sent off late on.
The game was marred by racist chanting towards Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, with the away side asking for the match to be halted after the 27-year-old Senegalese international was repeatedly subjected to monkey noises.
The Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, made a public apology on Thursday, describing the racist chanting as a "shameful act" and asking Koulibaly's forgiveness.

VAR drama mars Juve's historic win

TURIN • Juventus set a new points record in Serie A on Saturday with 53 from 19 games, but the seven-time defending Italian champions signed off for the winter break with the controversy surrounding the role of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ringing in their ears.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Juventus, undefeated in the league this season, closed out the year with a 2-1 win over Sampdoria to go nine clear of second-placed Napoli.
But VAR played a key role at the Allianz Stadium as two debatable penalties were awarded - one for Massimiliano Allegri's men and one for Sampdoria - while the opposition also had an added-time equaliser controversially ruled out by the technology.
Ronaldo curled in the opener after just two minutes in Turin, adding a second from the spot on 65 minutes to go top of the league's scoring charts on 14 goals and Allegri was delighted with the hard-fought victory.
The Bianconeri have dropped points just twice, against Genoa in October and Atalanta in midweek, and are firmly on track for an eighth consecutive Scudetto.
The Juventus coach told reporters: "It was important to end the year on a high and it wasn't at all easy.
"Records are meaningless, if not to improve and raise the bar. We do have the perception that with Ronaldo, there's a better chance of winning the Champions League. However, we're not even in January yet and there's a long way to go."
However, his counterpart Marco Giampaolo slammed Ronaldo's penalty as "a gift", before adding that (Riccardo) Saponara's goal should never have been cancelled".
He blasted: "For me, morally, the game was 2-2."
According to the BBC, the VAR was right to award Sampdoria's penalty as well as rule out Saponara's strike for offside, but Ronaldo's spot-kick should not have been given as Alex Ferrari's handball was not deliberate.

Football: Liverpool 'ambitious like hell' for Premier League title, says Klopp

Football: Liverpool 'ambitious like hell' for Premier League title, says Klopp

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp says his Liverpool players are "ambitious like hell" to win the Premier League, backing them to bounce back from their thumping at Barcelona and keep the title race alive against Newcastle.
Liverpool travel to face the St James' Park side managed by former Reds boss Rafael Benitez a point behind Premier League leaders Manchester City with two matches to go.
Victory on Saturday would see Liverpool go back to the top of the table and ramp up the pressure on City ahead of the reigning champions' home match against Leicester on Monday.
The German manager told reporters at his pre-match press conference on Friday (May 3) he was expecting a tough game against Newcastle, who are safe from relegation.
But he said his players had proved their ability to perform under pressure all season, amassing 91 points so far with just a single defeat in the Premier League.
"The boys are completely on fire," he said.
"When you are in the race and you see you can win it, you don't get tired, that's how it is.
"We are ambitious like hell. We want to (win) but we still know it's not 100 per cent in our hands but the only thing we can do is to beat Newcastle and that is unbelievably difficult."

Klopp reiterated that a mature away performance in the Champions League was not reflected in the 3-0 scoreline at Camp Nou.
And he insisted that his players were in a positive mood and had the mental strength to recover as they look to win Liverpool's first English title of the Premier League since 1990.
"It's no problem, of course we have to prove it again tomorrow, but we didn't have to pick up players in Barcelona and give them a hug," he said.
"It doesn't happen too often, honestly, that I lose 3-0 and have much more positive thoughts about the game than negative, but it was in this game.
"When we flew home it was all OK, the boys were already (focused) on the Newcastle game 100 percent," the German boss added.
"The boys have had 20 hours to recover, now we will have one session and try to prepare them for Newcastle, which is important because it will be a different game obviously, but it's not new for us."
Klopp revealed however that Naby Keita would miss the rest of the season with an adductor injury that is set to sideline the Guinea international midfielder for around eight weeks, putting his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations in jeopardy.
Keita limped off midway through the first half in Barcelona.
"Bad news, he has a high-grade adductor injury," said Klopp.
"The tendon is ruptured, which keeps him out for at least two months.
"Bad news for us obviously, but bad news for Guinea as well because the Africa Cup of Nations is coming up."

Tampines Rovers 0
Albirex Niigata 0

It was tactical cat and mouse in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) yesterday as leaders Tampines Rovers laid siege but had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Albirex Niigata.
Fireworks were expected from this fixture as the Stags, with 11 goals from three games, faced last season's undefeated champions but, in the end, the White Swans' defence held firm before 2,745 fans at Our Tampines Hub.
A disappointed Stags coach Gavin Lee said: "It's two points dropped. We could argue that they (Albirex) had chances), but we should have taken our chances.
"But we will get better with more training and, knowing these boys, they will rebound quickly."
White Swans coach Keiji Shigetomi found some satisfaction in his team's defensive strength, saying: "They (Tampines) can have the ball, but not in our vital areas. We have played them in a pre-season friendly (losing 4-0) and we understand their attacking threats. Our plan was to block all their avenues of attack."
The result keeps Tampines top of the nine-team SPL standings on 10 points from four games, three ahead of Brunei DPMM, who have a game in hand. Albirex are sixth with two points from three games.
The two clubs are known for their attacking football, but it was Albirex, yet to score this season, who had to dig in to repel waves of attacks from the Stags.
Lee applied pressure through his wingers - Jordan Webb and Ryutaro Megumi - and Webb came close in the 19th minute, nicking the ball off defender Shuhei Sasahara but curling wide from an acute angle. In the 35th minute, Megumi volleyed wide from close range and, in stoppage time, striker Khairul Amri missed a good chance which could have won it for the home team.
"Everyone could see that Albirex came with a clear game plan. We predicted that but, unfortunately, we could not get into a rhythm in the first half," Lee said.
"We gave Albirex a few more problems in the second half. It wasn't easy as they were looking to hit us on the break. In the end, it was an even game."
Despite ending Tampines' three-game winning streak, Albirex finished the game with some regrets.
Shigetomi said: "I'm more frustrated with no goals being scored. We have taken a clean sheet against Tampines, but we still need to work hard on our attacking play.
"The players have to work more on their finishing, be more ruthless, more decisive and improve their accuracy."
Meanwhile, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced yesterday sanctions against two National Football League players for cheating during the mandatory 2.4km fitness test.
Shahir Hamzah and Masnashzreen Masturi from Yishun Sentek Mariners allowed "unknown persons" to impersonate them and take the test on their behalf.
Photographic and video evidence were collected to prove their guilt and both players were banned from being registered in any FAS organised or sanctioned competitions until the end of the 2021 season.

Football: Singaporean coach Akbar Nawas is I-League's best coach as champions Chennai City sweep awards

SINGAPORE - Singaporean Akbar Nawas has been named the I-League's best coach after leading Chennai City to their first title earlier this month.
The Indian team swept seven out of 10 categories at the I-League awards and trophy presentation ceremony at the Taj Corramandel in Chennai on Wednesday (March 20).
Akbar received the Syed Abdul Rahim Best Coach Award, while Chennai's Spanish imports Roberto Eslava, Nestor Jesus Gordillo and Pedro Manzi were named the league's best defender, midfielder and forward respectively.
With 21 goals, Manzi shared the top-scorer award with Churchill Brothers' Willis Plaza, and was also voted the league's best player.
Akbar and his assistant K. Balagumaran have been credited for transforming Chennai from relegation stragglers last season to champions this year as they reaped the rewards for preaching and practising an attacking style of football.
Akbar, 43, told The Straits Times: "It has been a great season to remember, and the award was made possible because of my players, who did their jobs on the pitch to win the league.
"After finishing second with Tampines Rovers in Singapore (2016) and Global Cebu in the Philippines (2017), there is huge personal satisfaction in winning the league title with Chennai in India and helping them reach the AFC Champions League qualifiers."
Chennai also received a congratulatory message from Fifa president Gianni Infantino.
In a letter addressed to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), he wrote: "I was delighted to hear that Chennai City FC have been crowned 2018/19 I-League champions. It gives me great pleasure to congratulate them for their first-ever championship title.
"This is, no doubt, the result of effort and hard work, and everybody involved can be proud of this great achievement. I encourage them to continue working with determination and motivation.
"On behalf of the entire football community, I take this opportunity to thank Chennai City FC and your federation for helping spread the positive message of football and foster the practice of this beautiful game that unites us all."
The achievement of Akbar and Balagumaran has not gone unnoticed by the AIFF and the duo are said to be on its radar for the vacant India national coach position.
Akbar admitted that he has been approached by other teams, but he is keen to take Chennai forward in the new 20-team Indian Football League next season that will unify the I-League and the Indian Super League.
"I have received offers and I'm in discussions with my club owner about the future," said Akbar, who was named the Coach of the Year by Philippine news website Rappler for the inaugural season of the Philippines Football League in 2017.

SINGAPORE - National sports agency Sport Singapore (SportSG) announced a three-year partnership with German football giants Bayern Munich on Sunday (March 24).
The tie-up will see both parties join efforts to organise the FC Bayern Youth Cup - an international youth tournament series - as well as participate in coach exchanges and overseas education programmes.
The announcement was formally made on the sidelines of the finals of the 2019 FC Bayern Youth Cup Singapore at the Jurong East Stadium on Sunday morning, where Bayern hall of famer Klaus Augenthaler helped shortlist 16 players who could travel to the Munich in May for the Bayern Youth Cup World Finals. A final team of 10 will make the trip.
Bayern executive board member Joerg Wacker said the club experienced Singaporeans' passion for football when its first team featured in the pre-season International Champions Cup tournament in July 2017.
"In the last two years, we felt that we shared the same vision for football and we are proud to extend our work with SportSG," he said.
"FC Bayern is committed to contribute extensively and positively to the youth football development in Singapore for many years."
SportSG chief executive officer Lim Teck Yin said: "We are very happy to have a famous global brand in football - FC Bayern - as a long-term partner to enrich our existing programmes.
"There is a lot to learn from them with their longstanding record of producing well-rounded players.
"Their expertise will definitely help to inspire upcoming talents, encourage more players to train seriously and I hope that we will see sustained and increased interest in the sport over the years."

Football: New chapter for Tottenham as stadium hosts first game

LONDON (AFP, REUTERS) - When teenager Rayan Clarke rolled a pass off the centre spot at Tottenham Hotspur's gleaming new stadium on Sunday (March 24) it kicked off a new chapter for the storied north London club.
It also marked the end of a long exile for Tottenham's fans, 30,000 of whom watched their under-18s take on Southampton in the first match at the 62,062-seat arena.
The official homecoming after 680 days lodging at Wembley is on April 3 against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
But Sunday marked a significant day for fans walking down a sunny High Road, which leads to the stadium, for the first of two test events.
Once inside the reaction was a unanimous "wow!" as the majority got a first glimpse of the futuristic ground built at a cost of around one billion pounds (S$1.78 billion) on top of the old White Hart Lane ground that had been home since 1899.
"Out of this world," said supporter of 50 years Jim Munroe, sitting alongside his son in the West Stand. "The design is absolutely superb. You've got to compliment the chairman (Daniel Levy) on the attention to detail.
"This makes Arsenal's ground look silly." With a handy sense of occasion London-born J'Neil Bennett christened the stadium by curling in his side's opener in the 3-1 win. Harry Kane would have been proud of it.

Maurizio Pochettino, son of manager Mauricio, appeared as a second-half substitute while his dad, who has established Tottenham in the top four in England and steered them to the Champions League quarter-finals addressed fans at halftime.
"The old ground was magic, but this is going to be unbelievable," he said. "I remember the feeling when we played our last game there, it was emotional and we were crying, today the feeling is the same."

HISTORIC DAY

Pochettino acknowledged the vision of Levy who, in his programme notes, described the day as an historic one for the club he has run for 18 years.
Pochettino has been linked with vacancies at Real Madrid and Manchester United but the Argentinian has repeatedly made clear his wish to still be in charge when the senior Spurs side play at the new ground.

"I think it is unbelievable, it is so difficult to explain in only a few words," he said as he surveyed the scene on Sunday.
"We all feel the same, so excited, I got the same feeling when we left White Hart Lane on the last day, we were crying and now in the first day in the new stadium we feel the same emotion. We need to cry because our dream became true."
Should everything follow the revised plan, and the Palace match take place as scheduled, Tottenham will play the home leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City at their new ground rather than at Wembley, which has been a temporary base while the building work has been in progress.

"We are in a very good place in the Premier League and of course we have a massive challenge in the quarter-final of the Champions League and I think with all of our fans, 62,000, it is going to be fantastic to play and we can make it possible our dream to be in the semi-final," said Pochettino. "Why not?"
Meanwhile Pochettino saluted Tottenham supporters for their patience during the 679 days since the last game at White Hart Lane, with the new ground's planned opening at the start of this season delayed before a new date in September was also shelved following the failure of "critical alarm systems".
"Thank you so much to the fans for being so patient because in the last two years we moved to Wembley and (had) all the problems it means to move from your home to Wembley," Pochettino said. "But now all the effort has paid off and it is going to be amazing."
Tottenham's 2,533rd and last competitive match at the old White Hart Lane ground, where the 36,000 capacity limited their ability to compete financially with city rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, was a 2-1 win over Manchester United in May 2017.
The move back home was supposed to be at the start of this season but the vast project, including housing, a school, a hotel, a museum, a micro-brewery and a supermarket-sized club shop, was hit by a series of delays.

First impressions suggest the wait was worthwhile, even if there were gripes about the "self-flushing toilets". Intrinsic to Levy's vision was retaining the atmosphere that is often sacrificed when modern stadia replace Victorian-era grounds. With steeply-raked seats even fans high up are close to the action while the front seats are as close as five metres away.
Pride of place is the 17,500-seat single-tier Park Lane stand which has the feel of Borussia Dortmund's 'Yellow Wall'.

In the concourses spread over nine floors fans find plenty of reminders of the club's glory days, including the Lane Centre Spot, a plaque indicating the location of the old centre circle.
A range of feature walls depict club greats like 1961 double-winning manager Bill Nicholson.
Among the 65 catering outlets spread around the stadium is the Goal Line Bar, at 65 metres the longest in Europe.
"Let's just hope we have plenty to celebrate in it," said one fan as he clicked some souvenir snaps.

Football: EPL bottom team Huddersfield condemn racist abuse of Philip Billing on social media

LONDON (AFP) - Huddersfield Town have condemned the racist abuse of midfielder Philip Billing, with the English Premier League strugglers saying they have reported the incident to the police.
The 22-year-old received online racial abuse late on Tuesday (March 12) from someone claiming to be one of the Yorkshire club's fans.
"We're aware of the racist message sent to Philip Billing over social media on Tuesday evening and have subsequently referred the case to West Yorkshire Police," said a Huddersfield statement issued on Wednesday.
"Huddersfield Town does not tolerate abuse of any kind and has a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of discrimination.
"We will give our full cooperation to the police to deal with this matter in the strongest possible way."
Denmark Under-21 international Billing responded by retweeting the message from the fan with a thumbs down emoji.
The midfielder has been one of the Terriers' better players this season but went off at half-time during last Saturday's home defeat by Bournemouth, amid speculation linking him with a move to another Premier League club at the end of the season.
The midfielder has produced several outstanding displays for the Terriers this season.
Town manager Jan Siewert said after the match he was unsure whether Billing was carrying an injury or not.
Saturday's loss saw bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield slump to a 15th defeat in 17 league games and they are 16 points from safety with eight matches remaining.

Football: Griezmann on target again as Atletico edge closer to Barca

MADRID (AFP) - Antoine Griezmann struck again as Atletico Madrid kept the pressure on Barcelona at the top of La Liga by beating in-form Getafe 2-0 on Saturday (Jan 26).
Griezmann now has 10 goals in his last 11 games, his latest helping Atletico register their sixth win in seven league matches. The only dropped points came in a respectable draw away to Sevilla.
Saul Niguez tapped in a second before half-time at the Wanda Metropolitano to complete an impressively smooth victory over a Getafe side that had lost only once, to Barcelona, in 12 matches.
Renowned for their tenacity, Getafe also finished with nine men after Djene Dakonam and Leandro Cabrera were both sent off in the final minutes.
It is no coincidence that Griezmann's surge has coincided with a consistent run for his team, which looks timely too, with Real Madrid in La Liga and Juventus in the Champions League both to come at the start of next month.
With those games in mind, Diego Simeone will hope the thigh strain that forced his captain Diego Godin off at the interval is not serious. Atletico described the substitution as a "precaution".
Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde had said earlier on Saturday that he considers Atletico the greatest threat to their title hopes from the Spanish capital and it is hard to argue given Diego Simeone's men are now just two points behind, eight closer than Real.

Barca and Real both have games in hand to come on Sunday, the former away to Girona and the latter up against Espanyol.
Griezmann could have been playing for the Catalans had his decision last summer been different but instead he is fast-becoming the sharpest thorn in their side, driving Atletico almost single-handedly at times to a sustained title challenge.
Alvaro Morata could yet join this month, even if reports in the Spanish press have suggested a deal is proving difficult to close. With Griezmann in this sort of form and Diego Costa expected back from injury next month, perhaps Atleti are not feeling quite so in need.
The Frenchman's shot in the 27th minute was too quick for goalkeeper David Soria, who was taken by surprise and beaten at his near post. Thomas Partey did well to battle through midfield and it was his pass that had teed up Griezmann on the edge of the area.
Thomas was key again to the second, his lofted pass out wide allowing Lucas Hernandez to volley first-time into the six-yard box, where Nikola Kalinic should have finished. His effort was parried out and Saul slid in the rebound.
Godin departed during the interval, replaced by Juanfran, and Getafe could have pulled one back when Jose Gimenez misjudged a ball over the top. Angel Rodriguez nipped in but Gimenez did just enough to recover.
Getafe's frustration built and boiled over at the end as Djene Dakonam was shown a second yellow card in the 88th minute for a rash challenge on Thomas Lemar and then Leandro Cabrera followed him three minutes later for applauding the referee.
It was a feisty end to a comfortable Atletico win.

LONDON • The first anybody knew about it was the tinny roar from the Wolves end.
It was the news every Liverpool supporter had been dreading and, football being the sport of schadenfreude, there was not a great deal of sympathy coming from the Wolves fans who, for only one day, had chosen to serenade Manchester City, champions of England once again.
That was the moment when everyone associated with the Reds had to confront the harsh realities of trying to overhaul a side of City's durability, knowing now that 97 points were not going to be enough and that a season of sustained brilliance was not going to get its happy ending.
Not in the Premier League, anyway.
A few minutes earlier, the updates from Brighton had told a desperate, longing crowd that City were losing. Now everything had been turned upside down.
The Wolves fans were singing about City striker Sergio Aguero and, cruelly, "You nearly won the league". Later, the same thing happened all over again - twice, in fact - and by that stage, everybody knew that Liverpool's 29-year wait for a league title was not going to end.
Of course, Liverpool being Liverpool, they were determined not to let everything fizzle out with a sudden, damp silence.

  • FINAL DAY

  • Brighton 1 Manchester City 4
    Burnley 1 Arsenal 3
    Crystal Palace 5 Bournemouth 3
    Fulham 0 Newcastle 4
    Leicester 0 Chelsea 0
    Liverpool 2 Wolves 0
    Manchester United 0 Cardiff 2
    Southampton 1 Huddersfield 1
    Tottenham 2 Everton 2
    Watford 1 West Ham 4

  • 1990
The last time Liverpool won the English league title.
    97
Liverpool's points tally is the highest for runners-up in the English top flight. The previous mark was Manchester United's 89 points in 2011-12, when they lost the title on goal difference to Manchester City.
    25
Goals after the 75th minute in Liverpool's games, the most in the Premier League by a distance. Chelsea are next with 19, while City have 13.
    22
Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, last year's top scorer, shared the Golden Boot with teammate Sadio Mane and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who both scored twice on the final day.

Anfield was far too proud to sulk and so was Jurgen Klopp. The Liverpool manager told Sky Sports: "I know people will find always something (we could've done more).
"We had lucky moments, City had lucky moments, so to get 97 points is not always about outplaying opponents. This is a first step, that's how we see it - it's the majority of players that we had last season, so if we take the same step again... what a season that will be.
"In the past, always when I had a successful team, the players were picked off - that won't happen this time. There isn't anyone crying here. You always use one step as the basis for the next step."
Liverpool won for the ninth consecutive time in the league, courtesy of Sadio Mane's brace to mark the first time in 39 years they have gone successive seasons without losing a single fixture on their own ground.
They have equalled their club record of winning 30 times, the last time that happened was in 1979 over a 42-match season, and there is the small matter of a Champions League final to come.
Ultimately, though, the only detail that mattered here is they had finished second - 97 points being the best runners-up finish in league history - but second, all the same.
At the final whistle, it could not have been easy for Klopp and his players to try to disguise all that raw disappointment, especially on a day in which Liverpool, for 21 minutes, had been top on the table.
Mane's opener arrived in the 17th minute and, in that first half, it was difficult to comprehend how the afternoon would finish, or what could be believed and what could not.
Briefly, there was pandemonium as Brighton led City 1-0 on 27 minutes. The next update came barely a minute later - a goal for City. Soon afterwards, there was another one, and the next updates were all grievous setbacks.
All the Liverpool players could really worry about was making sure they did their part against Wolves, whose seventh-placed finish is the best of any promoted side since Ipswich ended in fifth in 2001.
But they kept going. Mane's second came nine minutes from time, putting him level with teammate Mohamed Salah in a three-way tie with Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the Golden Boot on 22 goals, while Alisson won the Golden Glove award with 21 clean sheets.
That, however, was not the prize the trio wanted. Afterwards, Salah told Sky Sports: "We did everything this season, we lost only one game. We got 97 points.
"I say congratulations to City and we will fight again next season for this trophy."
Elsewhere, Chelsea took third place following their goal-less draw at Leicester and Tottenham are fourth after a 2-2 draw with Everton.

Football: City boss Guardiola hails Aguero's big-game mentality ahead of Chelsea clash

MANCHESTER CITY (REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hailed striker Sergio Aguero's ability to consistently deliver on the biggest occasions.
Guardiola pointed to Aguero's 40th-minute opener in last month's 2-1 Premier League win over fellow title challengers Liverpool as the perfect example to illustrate his point.
That victory helped City cut then table-toppers Liverpool's lead to four points and Guardiola's side have since gone ahead of the Merseyside club on goal difference in a compelling race.
"That goal against Liverpool summed up what he is about. Sometimes the best tennis players on a point to save the break, they make an ace," the City manager told reporters ahead of Sunday's league clash against fourth-placed Chelsea.
"In the big moments, always the big athletes come there, the big finals, the big moments. Sometimes some players hide in the scary moments.
"The other ones step forward and say, 'I'm the boss, I'm here and I'm going to win the game.' Big clubs need these kinds of players. It's simple."
Aguero has scored 14 league goals in 22 matches this season and Guardiola hoped the club's all-time record scorer can find the target again on Sunday (Feb 10).

"Hopefully, he can continue to do it. In the big games, we need the important players... this game belongs to the players and the important games belong to the special players," Guardiola added.
City have 62 points from 26 matches while Chelsea are 12 points behind them having played one game less.

Football: Struggling La Liga side Villarreal sack Luis Garcia after 50 days and a solitary win

MADRID (AFP) - Villarreal, without a victory in La Liga since the end of November, announced on Tuesday (Jan 29) that they have fired coach Luis Garcia after just 50 days at the helm.
"The club will announce the name of the new Villarreal CF manager in the coming hours," said the official website.
Luis Garcia replaced Javi Calleja on Dec 10. His only victory in any competition came three days later when Villarreal beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 at home to clinch first place in their Europa League group.
Since then, Villarreal have drawn four and lost two league games and been eliminated by Espanyol over two legs in the Copa del Rey, a run of eight matches without a victory.
The Yellow Submarine have sunk to 19th in the 20-team Liga and are five points away from safety. They are at home to Espanyol on Sunday and face Sporting Lisbon in the last 32 of the Europa League on Feb 14 and 21.
"The club would like to thank the manager for his hard work, dedication and professionalism, wishing him the best of luck throughout his sporting career," the website said, adding that Luis Garcia would say farewell at a press conference at the Villarreal training ground in the afternoon.

Football: Liverpool's Mo Salah calls for change in treatment of women in Muslim world

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Egyptian football star Mohamed "Mo" Salah has called for change in the way women are treated in the Muslim world, in an interview with Time magazine published on Wednesday (April 17).
The 26-year-old Liverpool forward was named one of the US magazine's 100 most influential figures of the year, alongside other athletes including Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Naomi Osaka.
Salah told Time that while his attitudes towards gender equality had evolved over the years, he wanted to see more change.
"I think we need to change the way we treat women in our culture," he was quoted as saying. "It's not optional."
He said the treatment of women "in my culture and in the Middle East" had changed his opinions on gender issues.
"I support the woman more than I did before, because I feel like she deserves more than what they give her now, at the moment," he told the magazine.
Salah is an icon in Egypt after helping the country qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the first time they had reached the finals of the event since 1990. He scored both their goals in Russia, where they lost all three group games.
He was named African Footballer of the Year in 2017 and 2018 and was also English football's Player of the Year in 2017-2018 following a dazzling season with Liverpool.
On Wednesday night, he scored once as the Reds crushed Porto 4-1 away to reach the Champions League semi-finals 6-1 on aggregate.
He told Time he has learnt to cope with the "little bit of pressure" that comes with his elevated profile, while expressing pride at being regarded as a role model.
"To be the first Egyptian in (this) situation and no one has done this before... it's something different," he said, insisting that superstardom had not changed his lifestyle.
"I just live my life normal," he said. "Most of the time I stay at home, I don't like to go out."
