Football: Brighton edge into FA Cup quarter-finals

LONDON (AFP) - Brighton moved into the FA Cup quarter-finals for the second successive season as goals from Anthony Knockaert and Jurgen Locadia clinched a 2-1 win over Derby on Saturday (Feb 16).
Chris Hughton's side have been sucked into relegation danger in the Premier League after six games without a win.
But the Seagulls made the most of a welcome break from the grind of the relegation battle as they saw off Frank Lampard's Championship side at the Amex Stadium.
Derby had claimed the scalps of Manchester United and Southampton in domestic cup competitions this season.
But the fifth round tie was tipped in Brighton's favour by a dominant first-half display.
Brighton opened the scoring after 33 minutes when Knockaert bent his first-time shot into the bottom corner of Kelle Roos' net after connecting with Yves Bissouma's cross.
Hughton's team doubled their advantage when Locadia fired home from close range in first-half stoppage time after Bissouma's effort hit the post.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal star Ashley Cole set up a tense finish when the Derby defender headed in after 81 minutes.
It was the 38-year-old's first goal in England since 2012 and his first ever in the FA Cup and the landmark strike came in his second game since joining Derby until the end of the season following his release by LA Galaxy.
But, despite Derby's barrage of pressure, Cole's goal wasn't enough to spark a late escape for the Rams.
Championship strugglers Millwall are also through to the quarter-finals after a 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon.
AFC Wimbledon, currently bottom of League One, enjoyed a memorable win over West Ham in the fourth round.
But Neil Harris' side avoided becoming their latest upset victims as the Lions made it to the last eight for the second time in three years.
AFC Wimbledon's Joe Pigott hit the post from close range in the opening moments and Millwall made the most of that let-off to take the lead in the fifth minute.
Ryan Leonard made a barnstorming run down the right and whipped over a teasing cross that Scottish defender Murray Wallace converted with a powerful header at the far post.
Wallace also scored Millwall's last-gasp winner against Everton when the 2004 FA Cup finalists' came from behind for a shock fourth round victory.
Later on Saturday, Premier League leaders Manchester City travel to fourth tier minnows Newport County.

Football: Man City edge out Spurs to go top, Brighton scramble key point

LONDON (REUTERS) - Phil Foden's first Premier League goal ensured Manchester City edged past Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on Saturday (April 20) to return to the top of the Premier League and avenge their Champions League elimination by Mauricio Pochettino's side.
With Liverpool playing Cardiff on Sunday, City completed their 10th successive league win to move one point clear with four games left and remain masters of their own fate in what promises to be a thrilling finale to the title race.
However, their joy was muted by another injury to Kevin De Bruyne, who went off late in the first half and will almost certainly miss the midweek trip to Manchester United.
Elsewhere, relegation-threatened Brighton & Hove Albion scraped a key point in a goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers and relegated Fulham recorded their first away win of the season at Bournemouth.
Newcastle United erased any lingering relegation doubts as Ayoze Perez scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over Southampton that lifted them 10 points clear of the drop zone.
City struck early when Foden headed home on five minutes after a clever ball back across goal from Sergio Aguero.
They struggled to assert themselves, however, against ever dangerous opponents who always looked capable of scoring with Son Heung-min twice free on goal and Christian Eriksen failing to make City pay.
The champions could have extended their lead in a fast-flowing game in which both keepers produced excellent saves, but there was to be no repeat of Wednesday's thriller which City won 4-3 but went out of Europe on goal difference.
"It's my first Premier League goal so it will live with me forever," said Foden, who admitted he was surprised to be given the chance to start such a vital game.
Of De Bruyne, Guardiola said: "I don't know - he's played a lot of minutes without preparation. After injury they don't train properly to be able to take a game every three days."

COSTLY DEFEAT

Defeat may prove costly for third-placed Spurs who are struggling to hang on to their top-four place. Three points separate them from sixth-placed United, who have played one game fewer.
"It was an amazing game again," Pochettino said.
"It was tough again. Both teams competed really well and I think we deserved more. (City keeper) Ederson was man of the match.
"I am happy, disappointed with the result but so happy with the performance - we were always in the game."

At Molineux, Brighton hardly oozed confidence after a run of four straight league defeats with no goals scored, but they scrambled a draw to go three points clear of Cardiff with four games remaining. Crucially, they also have a much better goal difference.
Fulham produced the shock of the afternoon by beating Bournemouth 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium - their second successive victory of an underwhelming season.
Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the winner from the penalty spot to ruin Eddie Howe's 500th game as a manager.
Gerard Deulofeu scored an impressive double as FA Cup finalists Watford kept their European ambitions alive with a comfortable 2-1 victory over Huddersfield while Leicester City twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with West Ham United at London Stadium.
Jamie Vardy bagged their first equaliser with his 16th goal of the season before Harvey Barnes pounced in stoppage-time with his first goal for the Foxes.
"It's obviously a great feeling to score - it's been a long time coming," Barnes said.
Perez struck twice in three first-half minutes for Newcastle but Mario Lemina replied as Southampton threatened a comeback. Perez sealed the points late on to become the first Newcastle player to score a Premier League hat-trick since 2015.

Football: Guardiola places faith in Jesus with Aguero injured

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City will be without injured leading scorer Sergio Aguero as they try to regain the advantage in the Premier League title race against struggling Cardiff on Wednesday (April 3).
A thigh injury means the Premier League's leading marksman - he has 19 goals to his name - will sit it out with Brazil star Gabriel Jesus taking his place.
Victory over a side they thrashed 5-0 in the away fixture earlier this season would see City leapfrog Liverpool to lead the title race by a point, with both having played the same number of games.
City manager Pep Guardiola admitted Aguero faces a race to be fit for the FA Cup semi-final with Brighton on Saturday and the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final away to Tottenham next Tuesday.
"Tomorrow (Wednesday) Sergio is not able to play," said Guardiola. "He didn't train the last two days.
"Hopefully, he can on Saturday or next Tuesday. We will see his evolution in the next few days."
Guardiola, whose side is bidding for a historic quadruple in winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League to add to their League Cup success already this term, has faith in Jesus being able to fill in for Aguero.
"Gabriel is ready," said Guardiola.
"He is having a good season and it is not always easy to play in this club as a striker in the same position as Sergio.
"He is fighting against one legend and an incredible top player in his best season since we have been at the club.
"When Gabriel played, he played well. Tomorrow he is going to help us and fight and score goals and create space for others."
City might still have been top but for a late error by France's World Cup-winning captain Hugo Lloris gifting Liverpool all three points on Sunday in a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
"When you see that, you say 'Ah s**t'," he said.
"But after five or ten minutes, you think it's a nice but terrible challenge.
"Nobody said it would be easy. Nobody. We knew it and I knew it.
"Everybody is excited for what we are going to live in the next weeks.
"Let's beat Cardiff for the main target to go back top of the league with six games left.
"After that we live again, Wembley, to achieve the one final (FA Cup) I never experienced in my life in the oldest trophy, and after that the Champions League."

Football: Solskjaer extends perfect record as Man United beat Newcastle

Football: Solskjaer extends perfect record as Man United beat Newcastle

NEWCASTLE, United Kingdom (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joined Matt Busby in the Manchester United record books on Wednesday (Jan 2) as his inspirational decision to bring on Romelu Lukaku as a substitute paid immediate dividends in a 2-0 victory against Newcastle.
The victory, secured after Lukaku scored with his first touch of the game in the 64th minute, clinched a fourth win in as many games for United's interim manager.
And Solskjaer now joins United's iconic former leader Busby as the only other manager in the club's proud history to have started his career with four wins.
Lukaku pounced after Martin Dubravka had failed to hold onto Marcus Rashford's ambitious 25-yard free-kick, the Newcastle keeper spilling the ball for the alert substitute to covert from close range.
The Belgian also had a role in United's second, in the 80th minute, along with Alexis Sanchez, the former Arsenal striker who has been out for over a month and was brought on, along with Lukaku.
The two subs combined passes, as Newcastle pressed upfield in search of an equaliser, and Sanchez's precise pass found Rashford in space, the young England striker having the poise to calmly roll the ball past Dubravka.
After a miserable first half to the season under Solskjaer's predecessor Jose Mourinho, the win simply adds to the growing adoration being shown by United supporters towards their former player.
United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, widely criticised for his part in the club's woes since the retirement of Alex Ferguson and their decline from the summit of the English game, had at least spotted the wisdom in his timing of Mourinho's dismissal earlier this month.
It presented the interim manager with three eminently winnable games against Cardiff, Huddersfield and Bournemouth - victories which Solskjaer duly collected in some style.
But the visit to St James's Park, at the end of a busy holiday period, was always going to be one that offered a far greater challenge to the "new-look" United and the opening half certainly served as a timely reminder of how much work Solskjaer still has to do if he is to elevate this season to anything above the instantly forgettable.

POGBA FACTOR

Paul Pogba, involved in seven goals in the three games since Solskjaer took over, again looked a different player away from the stifling micro management of Mourinho.
His early shot tested Dubravka in the home goal but while there was plenty of intent on United's part there was little that truly concerned Rafa Benitez's side.
Instead, it was the struggling hosts who enjoyed the better of that first half, reminding Solskjaer, in case he needed it, of just how frail his new side can be defensively.
Twice, in quick succession midway through the first half, Christian Atsu pounced on poor defending although without really testing David de Gea.
United defender Phil Jones also contributed to the general unease at the back, needlessly giving the ball away on the edge of his own area before making up for the error with a brilliant tackle on Salomon Rondon.
The second half saw United step up their attacking game, Rashford soon twisting in from the by-line and shooting across the face of the goal.
And, although there was another promising flurry of Newcastle pressure, and a penalty appeal after Victor Lindelof tangled with Atsu, Solskjaer's double substitution proved pivotal.
Atsu, Newcastle's most dangerous performer, shot just wide of the United goal from a half-cleared free-kick after 75 minutes but Rashford's goal soon removed any lingering hope of a comeback.
And had Pogba not found the side-netting, instead of the goal, from a tight angle after rounding the keeper deep in injury-time, it might have been an even more emphatic victory.

Football: Guardiola unhappy as City keep pace with Liverpool in Huddersfield win

HUDDERSFIELD (AFP) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was far from satisfied despite a 3-0 win away to Huddersfield Town on Sunday (Jan 20) that saw his side cut Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points.
Liverpool's compelling 4-3 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday heaped huge pressure back onto reigning champions City but they were rarely troubled by a Town side that look a certain bet for relegation this season.
City's first goal, a deflected strike for Danilo in the 18th minute, brought up their 100th goal of the season in all competitions before Raheem Sterling scored a diving header from Leroy Sane's cross in the 54th minute and Sane himself made it 3-0 with a calm finish just two minutes later.
For Guardiola, it should have been an afternoon of enjoyment as his side again proved their willingness to push Liverpool all the way this season.
The City manager, however, has forged a footballing reputation based on sublime performances as well as ruthless goalscoring and, on that basis, his team's showing in West Yorkshire was not a success as the visitors never really clicked into gear on a day against a Huddersfield side who had parted company with manager David Wagner on Monday.

'Improve in the future'

"During the season you have these kind of games," Guardiola said. "It is important to win. We have scored many goals in all competitions.
"(But) the way we played, we didn't deserve more than three goals. We will improve in the future.
"We have to demand more from ourselves in every game and do our best, but sometimes it's difficult.
"Today we are happy we have won but after immediately we have to analyse. During the season you have games when maybe you are not in the top level and it is important to win these games."
Although City's fans were happier than their manager following this result, Guardiola could at least take some heart from the fact his side again refused to blink first in the race for the title.
For the second consecutive week, City kicked off knowing Liverpool had already won their weekend fixture and that, consequently, the onus was back on his players to secure three points as well.
Once again, Guardiola's side managed to do that following up the 3-0 victory over Wolves with this showing and the City manager was more than happy to remind everybody that silverware is not handed out for another four months.
"One team has been better but we're in January and there's many more games to play," he added.
"You don't win or lose the Premier League in January. We have to focus on what we have to do. If Liverpool win, we have to win. And if Liverpool lose then we also have to win." This match was a baptism of fire for Huddersfield's caretaker boss Mark Hudson and while the Terriers showed impressive fight to inspire some hope this season, this defeat still left them 10 points adrift of safety.
If, as expected, the Borussia Dortmund Under-23 coach Jan Siewert is appointed as Wagner's permanent replacement, nobody would blame him if he spent his first day in the job preparing for a return to the second-tier Championship next season.
"It's been a long week," admitted Hudson.

Sterling gets van Dijk's vote for PFA award
LONDON • Virgil van Dijk has voted for Raheem Sterling, one of his biggest rivals for the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year award, to win this season's prize in recognition of his improvement at Manchester City.
The Liverpool defender is among the favourites to land the accolade following an outstanding campaign for the Premier League leaders but believes that several City players should be in the running.
Van Dijk ultimately opted for the former Liverpool forward, likely his closest challenger for the honour, with voting rules preventing players backing their teammates.
Sterling, who is believed to have voted for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, has 15 goals and nine assists for Pep Guardiola's team this season as they attempt to retain the league title at Liverpool's expense.
The Netherlands captain said: "I voted for Raheem Sterling. I did what I thought and he deserves it. He's had a fantastic season.
"I could have voted for Bernardo Silva as well and another couple of players from Manchester City.
"But I am just being honest. He has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it."
The 27-year-old also reiterated his focus was on silverware with Jurgen Klopp's team and not individual awards.
He added: "Of course, you're going to be proud (to be in the running for the award), but all the hard work in the training ground is something we all did together.
"It is to win something as a team, a collective thing as a club. Hopefully, that is something that will happen."
Sterling has earned his peers' respect and their votes not only because of his on-pitch exploits but also off it, as an increasingly prominent campaigner against racism in football.
On Monday, the England international issued a defiant message to racists that he was "proud to be black".
Declaring he would rather stay on the field and punish the opposition in the face of racist abuse than be part of an orchestrated walk-off, he added: "My mum has taught me how to love myself, how to love my skin colour and how to be comfortable in my skin colour.
"I wouldn't personally agree with it (leaving the field). I would rather go and win the game because that would hurt them even more.
"They're trying to get you down. If you do walk off as a group, then they win. If you score a goal to win the match, that's an even better feeling, which beats them."
However, the 24-year-old played down his impact as a spokesman on how racism is a blight on the game, saying he "did not really think he can make a difference as this is something that has been happening before I was born".

Low on a high after Germany's last-ditch win over Dutch

Low on a high after Germany's last-ditch win over Dutch

AMSTERDAM • Under-fire Joachim Low took the high road after Germany's last-gasp 3-2 victory over the Netherlands on Sunday, claiming he "did not see the win as an act of vindication".
The coach has been under immense pressure after the national team's annus horribilis, which saw them suffer their worst run of form in history.
Die Mannschaft signed off on the lowest possible note last year with a record six defeats, including their failure to progress to the second phase of a World Cup for the first time since 1938 and relegation from the Nations League.
Low's critics in the German media had been sharpening their knives before their opening Euro 2020 qualifier in Amsterdam, slamming his decision to ditch 2014 World Cup-winning stalwarts Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Thomas Muller as a "high-stakes gamble".
However, their tone was far more conciliatory after the unexpected win - the team's first on Dutch soil since 1996.
Hailing Low's first competitive victory of the year as "a victory for the coach", German magazine Kicker felt he had "managed to unite this young team behind him".
German daily Bild went one further, declaring he "had delivered in the first truly important game since the World Cup and showed up everyone who said he is no longer the right man for the job".

REVERSAL OF FORTUNE
Today, we had the gambling luck that we lacked in the past games.
JOACHIM LOW, Germany coach, after his side beat the Netherlands 3-2 on Sunday with a Nico Schulz goal in added time.

But while the praise marked a decisive change in tone from the unrelenting criticism since Germany's humiliating exit in Russia, Low played down the idea that he had stuck it to his critics.
The 59-year-old said post-game: "When my team play as well as they did, then I am positive, regardless of what is going on off the field."
Telling German TV channel RTL that his players "had not lost the faith", he added: "The first half was great, we had the game under complete control.
"The goal in the second half came at a very bad time. It is a process that our young team have to go through with.
"Today, we had the gambling luck that we lacked in the past games."
Wingers Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry put the away side ahead in the Group C encounter, before Ronald Koeman's men hit back after the break through defender Matthijs de Ligt and forward Memphis Depay.
However, forward Marco Reus came off the bench late on to set up defender Nico Schulz's added-time strike as Germany avenged a 3-0 Nations League thrashing in the same stadium last October.
Declaring the team "will get a lot of confidence", the match-winner said: "That feels very good. The victory is very good for us."
While German football still has much work to do to get back to the summit - there are no Bundesliga clubs in the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since 2006 - Low can at least take a breather until the next round of qualifiers against Belarus and Estonia in June.

Football: Chelsea target Pulisic not for sale in January, say Dortmund

BERLIN (AFP) - Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund have insisted Chelsea-target Christian Pulisic will not be allowed to leave in the January transfer window.
According to British media reports, Chelsea are interested in the 20-year-old US international, but Dortmund, who want €50 million (S$78 million) for the right winger, have blocked a possible departure next month.
"We won't let any important players go who are indispensable to achieving our sporting goals," director of sport Michael Zorc told Sport Bild magazine with Dortmund seven points clear in the league table.
"I strongly assume that Christian will still be wearing the Borussia Dortmund shirt in February."
Head coach Lucien Favre often prefers England international Jadon Sancho on the right wing, leaving Pulisic, who has also been linked to Liverpool, to start just four of Dortmund's 14 Bundesliga games so far this season.
However, the fleet-footed American has started four of Dortmund's six Champions League group stage games including Tuesday's 2-0 win at Monaco when Raphael Guerreiro scored both goals to put the Germans in Monday's draw for the last 16.
Germany midfielder Julien Weigl, linked to both Arsenal and Roma, is another big-name player struggling for game time who has been told he is going nowhere.
The 23-year-old has been relegated to the Dortmund bench following the arrival of Belgium's World Cup star Axel Witsel.
It also looks as though Japan international Shinji Kagawa also has no future at Dortmund as the attacking midfielder failed to make the 18-man squad for Monaco, despite seven players being ruled out.

Football: Spanish LaLiga unaware of English Premier League interest in Javier Tebas

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Spanish LaLiga's organising body has said it does not expect president Javier Tebas to jump ship to the Premier League, responding to British media reports that the Spaniard has emerged as a candidate to become the English top flight's chief executive.
"We are not aware of this supposed interest. That said, if a competition as important as the Premier League is taking note of the work being done by LaLiga, including its president, clubs and employees, it is a source of pride for the entire organisation," a LaLiga spokesman said on Wednesday (Feb 20).
"Javier has a contract with LaLiga and not only is he happy here, he also has responsibilities and challenges which occupy his full attention. This includes the changing broadcast landscape and battling the threat of new competitions - including format changes that put domestic leagues at risk."
The Premier League has struggled to find a successor to long-serving chief executive Richard Scudamore, who stepped down last December after 19 years with the organisation.
Susanna Dinnage, a senior executive at media organisation Discovery, was named as the new chief executive last November but later announced she would not be taking up the role.
Tebas, 56, made headlines by pledging last August to play one LaLiga game per season overseas, although a bid to stage Girona's game against Barcelona in Miami last month fell through after Barca withdrew from it, citing a lack of consensus.

Football: Manchester United should give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer permanent job this month: Gary Neville

PARIS (REUTERS) - Manchester United's hierarchy should confirm interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as permanent manager as soon as March instead of waiting until the end of the season, former club captain Gary Neville has said.
Solskjaer has revitalised United since taking over from Jose Mourinho in December, with the team's victory at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday (March 6) offering the most compelling evidence yet that he is the best man for the job.
The Norwegian helped United pull off one of the greatest comebacks in the competition's history as his side sealed a dramatic 3-1 win in Paris to reach the quarter-finals on away goals despite losing the first leg 2-0.
Neville made his comments before kick-off, citing former United striker Solskjaer's stellar record as interim boss, which now stands at 14 victories from 17 games in all competitions.
"The form guide says it all," the former defender told Norwegian broadcaster Viasport. "I'll be surprised if Solskjaer is not awarded the job during the international break (in March).
"I can't believe what's happened. I thought when he first came in it was to reconnect the club with fans... someone who the club could rely on to give information to the board and then they would appoint the best manager in the world."
Solskjaer has also helped United salvage their season on the domestic front.

The team are now fourth in the Premier League and playing the sort of thrilling attacking football that was last seen at Old Trafford when Alex Ferguson was in charge.
"The performances are very good," Neville said. "The fans are loving it. It's been a sensational three months and I think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will get given the job.
"He'll probably be the King of Norway, the President of Norway, the Prime Minister of Norway as well!"

Football: Ghana President forces Asamoah Gyan out of 24-hour retirement for Africa Cup of Nations

(THE GUARDIAN) - Asamoah Gyan has made a rapid U-turn on his decision to retire from Ghana duty and will now play at the Africa Cup of Nations, after being told by the nation's President that it is "in the national interest" that he reconsiders.
"A presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded," said the former Sunderland striker in a statement. "I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah to help win the Afcon trophy."
Gyan turned his back on the team only 24 hours earlier after reportedly being dropped as captain but Mr Akufo-Addo was concerned that Gyan's decision had caused such uproar among the Ghanaian public that he personally contacted the striker and used his influence to change his mind.
"President Akufo-Addo spoke on the telephone with Asamoah Gyan, and informed him of the considerable national disquiet over his decision to retire from the Black Stars," the spokesman for the president, Eugene Arhin, said in a statement.
"The President urged him, in the national interest, to rescind his decision to retire from the Black Stars, and make himself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah."
Having said on Tuesday (May 21) he was retiring to avoid fuelling "the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy", Gyan's love for the national team appears to have been rekindled after Akufo-Addo's telephone call.
"My desire to help Ghana end the over three-decade long wait to annex the Afcon trophy still burns strong, and I remain committed to serving this great nation and the people of Ghana," said the 33-year-old.
Gyan, who played in three World Cups, is Ghana's record scorer with 51 goals in 106 appearances and currently plays for Kayserispor in Turkey. It is unclear whether he will still have the captaincy at the Africa Cup of Nations or, as was widely reported in Ghana, it will be handed to André Ayew.

Football: Man City come from two goals down to reach FA Cup

"At times we played really good football but it can, and it must be, a lot better on Sunday," said Van Dijk. "There were times where we did not put enough pressure on them and were sloppy and lost the ball. "Against Germany we can expect a completely different game and we all realise that. We know what we are capable of."

Football: Emotional breakdown as Japan stun imploding Iran at Asian Cup

Football: Emotional breakdown as Japan stun imploding Iran at Asian Cup

AL-AIN, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (AFP) – Japan cashed in on a defensive mix-up and a controversial penalty as they stunned favourites Iran 3-0 in the Asian Cup semi-finals to move one win away from their fifth title on Monday (Jan 28).
Yuya Osako put Japan 1-0 up after half-time when the Iranian defence fatally stopped to remonstrate with the referee, and then stroked home the penalty awarded after a replay for Morteza Pouraliganji’s accidental hand ball.
Genki Haraguchi then scored in stoppage time to complete a rout which had been wholly unexpected against a free-scoring Iran side which had banged in 12 unanswered goals en route to the semis.  It was the last hurrah for Iran’s long-serving coach Carlos Queiroz, who is leaving the team after nearly eight years at the helm, a reign that has included two World Cups.
Queiroz said the “innocent mistake” that led to the opening goal, when players surrounded the referee as Japan played on and scored, “destroyed (them) emotionally”.
“My players stopped and everyone was expecting the referee to take action for that incident,” he said, referring to a challenge on Takumi Minamino on the edge of the box.  “That moment created an emotional breakdown for my team and after that there was only one team on the pitch.”
Eleven minutes later, Minamino’s cross hit Pouraliganji’s arm as he slid in, but Australian referee Chris Beath blew for the penalty and stood by his decision after watching a replay.  Osako stroked home the spot-kick to give Japan a 2-0 lead with 23 minutes to play, and there was no coming back for Iran whose 43-year wait for a fourth Asian title goes on.

Coach hails ‘underdogs’

“My players had good preparation and showed great fighting spirit. They played as underdogs,” said Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu, whose team will play Qatar or hosts the United Arab Emirates in Friday’s final.
“I’m happy they showed that spirit and fight, and delivered a win for the fans back home.”
Queiroz’s Iran have been the form team of the Asian Cup but they lacked ideas on Monday against a calm Japanese team who seized their opportunities.
At a rocking Hazza Bin Stadium, Iran lobbed balls at target man Sardar Azmoun at every opportunity but it was Japan who looked the biggest threat in the opening exchanges.  Captain Maya Yoshida headed over and Ritsu Doan saw a shot trickle wide as the Blue Samurai were anything but cowed by the physical Iran presence.
However, Shuichi Gonda had to be sharp to keep out Azmoun from a tight angle – after the goalkeeper had gifted Iran possession with a botched clearance.  The game was on a knife-edge but a major misjudgement from the Iranian defence tilted it decisively Japan’s way 11 minutes after half-time.
While five players were protesting Hossein Kanani’s innocence over his tackle on Minamino, the forward got up and crossed to Osako, whose glancing header put Japan ahead.
It was a body-blow for Iran, but worse was to come when Pouraliganji was adjudged to have handled in the box, a decision that could have gone either way.
Osako stuck it away to all but silence the Iranian support, who then had to watch as Haraguchi stole in for the third goal to make it a lopsided victory for Japan.
Japan will be buoyed by their best performance of the tournament so far, and with a 100 percent record they shape as formidable opponents in Friday’s final.

Pochettino frustrated with new stadium's delay

Pochettino frustrated with new stadium's delay

LONDON • Tottenham's bid to gazump Manchester City and Liverpool to the Premier League title suffered a blow, after manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted it would be "tough" for the club to move into their new stadium this season.
Spurs are committed to playing at Wembley until March 2, when they host Arsenal in the north London derby, after which they have five league games left in the campaign.
While Spurs had hoped to open their 62,062-capacity ground on Sept 15 against Liverpool, they were forced to delay its opening after issues with the critical safety systems. The delays have helped to push up the cost of the facility to more than £850 million (S$1.4 billion).
At his press conference ahead of their home league game against Leicester today, he said: "My gut feeling (is that it is not ready), but I hope and I wish to be in the new stadium playing.
"My wish, my hope and my dream is to finish this season playing in the new stadium. We'll see if you can trust more in my gut or the capacity to finish the stadium before the end of the season."
Although Spurs have a deal to use Wembley for the rest of the term, fans have increasingly shown their reluctance to attend the venue.
The 29,164 attendance in the 2-1 win over Watford on Jan 30 was their lowest of the season.
Pochettino said that he understood their frustration, revealing he also wanted to leave Wembley as soon as possible.
The Argentinian said: "The people are going to be disappointed to play at Wembley, not because they don't like Wembley - we all love Wembley - but because we expect to already play in our new stadium.
"Did you see the last few games how many people were there? 30,000. I want to play in front of 60,000 - not 30,000.
"The 60,000 people in the stadium always help you to achieve three points and, for the fans, it's going to be a massive boost. That's going to translate to the team."
The 46-year-old also voiced his unhappiness at the league for not being more accommodating ahead of the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at home to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.
The German Bundesliga leaders have an extra day of rest as they played their league game against Hoffenheim yesterday, which Pochettino called "a massive disadvantage".
He told the BBC: "We are not receiving help. The Premier League must care about teams involved in the competition.
"In another country like Spain, Germany, France, clubs involved (in the Champions League) can be helped - the league is going to help you arrive in the best condition."
