LONDON • A report late on Sunday by The Sun claiming that owner Mike Ashley had agreed to sell Newcastle United to Abu Dhabi billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan for £350 million (S$612 million) appears to have been premature, according to Sky Sports.
The British tabloid said the contract between Ashley and Khaled, who is a member of the Abu Dhabi ruling family and a cousin of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, had been signed and sent to the Premier League.

But broadcaster Sky yesterday revealed on its website that while Khaled "has held talks about buying Newcastle, there is some way to go for any deal to be agreed".
Ashley, who bought a controlling stake in the Premier League club in 2007, has in the past tried to sell the club, whose fans have been increasingly vocal against his ownership over the years.
The founder of British sportswear retailer Sports Direct International said last October that he had not received any acceptable offers for Newcastle, a year after he officially put the club up for sale.
However, he told Sky in December that talks on a deal had made promising progress, although he prefaced that by insisting "any potential buyer of the club must be able to provide transfer funds".
Khaled, who is also the founder of Bin Zayed Group, a leading conglomerate with diverse business interests from construction to energy, previously failed in his bid to buy Liverpool for £2 billion last year, according to the Daily Mail.
The Premier League and the Emirati's company did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
Newcastle officials have also refused to reveal more, with a senior source telling the Daily Mail: "We would politely decline to comment at this time."
According to local daily The Chronicle, previous takeover bids from former Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon and British businesswoman Amanda Staveley had "collapsed despite both entering the due diligence stage".

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enjoyed his fifth successive victory since being named interim manager as his much-changed side beat second-tier strugglers Reading 2-0 at home in the FA Cup third round on Saturday (Jan 5).
Juan Mata's penalty and a well-taken effort in first-half stoppage time by Romelu Lukaku, given his first start since Solskjaer took over, sent United into the fourth round.
It was a subdued performance by the 12-times FA Cup winners at Old Trafford, where Reading impressed, but maintained former United striker Solskjaer's dream start to life in the hot seat vacated last month by Jose Mourinho who was sacked.
Solskjaer becomes the first United manager to begin his reign with five straight wins since Matt Busby.
United were joined in the next round by West Ham United who beat second-tier Birmingham City 2-0 at the London Stadium - Samir Nasri making his debut for the Hammers in his first game since completing an 18-month doping ban.
Austrian Marko Arnautovic put West Ham ahead early on but was later substituted because of injury. His replacement, Andy Carroll, struck West Ham's second in stoppage time.
Premier League strugglers Burnley made hard work of a 1-0 win over third-tier Barnsley in a match notable for a bizarre intervention by the video assistant referee (VAR) - the system being used in nine of the 32 third-round ties.

 
Burnley were awarded a penalty for a foul on Matej Vydra before the interval but just as he was running up to take the spot kick the referee Simon Hooper indicated that the decision had been reversed by VAR because of an offside in the build-up.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche was left fuming but his mood improved when Chris Wood eventually sealed victory from the penalty spot in the second minute of stoppage time.
Brighton & Hove Albion beat Bournemouth 3-1 away in an all-Premier League affair with Anthony Knockaert, Yves Bissouma and Florin Andone all on target.
In the 1230 GMT kickoffs, West Bromwich Albion beat 2013 FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic 1-0 while third-tier Shrewsbury Town held Stoke City, relegated from the top flight last season, to a 1-1 draw. Sheffield Wednesday and Luton Town drew 0-0.
Cup holders Chelsea are in action later at home to Nottingham Forest while Arsenal visit Blackpool.

NINE CHANGES

Solskjaer made nine changes to the side that beat Newcastle United in midweek and there was a disjointed feel to his team's display as Reading matched their illustrious opponents.
Fred, another player to get a rare start, thought he had given United the lead midway through the first half but was flagged offside, although Mata was fouled in the build-up.
Referee Stuart Attwell, helped by VAR, brought play back to award a penalty which Spaniard Mata stroked home.
Reading had chances before and after that with Andy Yiadom and Danny Loader guilty of bad misses, and United were given breathing space when Lukaku latched onto a superb pass by Alexis Sanchez to round keeper Anssi Jaakkola and slot home.
"He has had his time off over Christmas and now he is getting his fitness back," Solskjaer said of Lukaku.
"He needed the 90 minutes, but I thought he took the ball well with a great pass from Alexis - that's two (assists) in two (games) for him now he has made which is also a positive." The only moment of note in a dour second half was Solskjaer giving a debut to 19-year-old Dutch youngster Tahith Chong.

LONDON • Whoever said the magic of the FA Cup was dead should have paid a visit to Kingsmeadow, The Den and the New Meadow on Saturday.
While the competition has taken a backseat to the Premier League and the Champions League in recent years, it still represents the perfect opportunity for English football's lesser lights to have their day in the sun.
And shine they did as AFC Wimbledon and Millwall humbled their top-tier opponents in the fourth round of the FA Cup in raucous post-game scenes at their respective home grounds.
Wimbledon revived memories of their "Crazy Gang" heyday in the late 80s, knocking West Ham out with a 4-2 win at Kingsmeadow.
The shock loss to Wimbledon, who are rock-bottom in League One, left Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini "ashamed" of his players.
He told reporters after his side went 3-0 down before the break: "Was I angry at half-time? Yes of course.
"I didn't expect it, the attitude, playing against a team that sits two divisions below us but, in football, you can lose in two or three balls.
"They started the way we needed to start and, when you have such high pace with the quality of the players... We didn't have the same level."
Wimbledon defender Toby Sibbick, who was born 11 years after the club won the 1988 FA Cup, their only major silverware - told BT Sport scoring the fourth goal had been "one of the highlights for me".
He added: "I thought the boys were excellent. It's a great win, look at the fans, this is what it's about."
Everton were also stunned by Championship strugglers Millwall 3-2 but, unlike Pellegrini, Marco Silva sought to deflect blame by pinning the defeat on the lack of a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The Toffees felt aggrieved as their opponents' second goal appeared to go in off the arm of Jake Cooper.
To make matters worse, the strike was shown on a big screen in the stadium immediately afterwards, with the handball obvious to everyone watching at The Den.
Premier League grounds hosting FA Cup ties are using VAR this season but the technology was not installed at Millwall - a situation the Everton manager said was unfair.
Claiming "it does not make sense", the Portuguese bemoaned: "If we are to be fair with all the clubs, you have to be fair with the competition and you also have to do it for all the games.
"Now we go home with big frustration. I am not here just to be angry with the referee but it is true.
"It was a clear handball in the moment. The players, they saw and went to speak with the assistant and thousands of people saw (it) on the big screen."
Shrewsbury Town nearly made it a trio of upsets on a day of surprises and it took an added-time equaliser from Wolves' Matt Doherty to deny them a place in the fifth round.
The League One outfit were leading 2-0 after 70 minutes at New Meadow and Shrewsbury manager Sam Ricketts admitted to "real mixed emotions" after Nuno Espirito Santo's men forced a replay.
He told the BBC: "I base myself on performances and that was very, very good, but I am disappointed not to win the game."

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told his first official press conference as Manchester United's caretaker manager on Friday (Dec 21) that he would relish the opportunity to be the permanent boss.
The 45-year-old Norwegian, a legendary former player at Old Trafford, has been appointed interim boss until the end of the season, replacing Jose Mourinho, who was sacked on Tuesday.
Solskjaer, on loan from Norway's Molde, conceded that he has not looked beyond the end of the current campaign with the club where he spent nearly 15 years as a player and coach.
But he said he would be interested in taking the job permanently should the opportunity arise.
"When you get a job like this and they ask you to sign for six months, you say 'yeah'," he said.
"I'm happy to help out and my job now for the next six months is to do as well as I can and move the club forward as well as I can.
"I understand there are so many managers who would love to be manager of Manchester United and I am one of them. But it is not something we've talked about, they'll do a process now for the next six months."
Solskjaer, renowned for his threat off the bench and still revered by United supporters for scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final, faces a daunting challenge as he replaces Mourinho.

 
 
 
 
United have made their worst start in the Premier League era and languish 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, and 11 off the Champions League places.
"My job is to help the players, make them grasp the opportunity now because they all want to be part of Man United," said Solskjaer.
"I'm going to be here to help them, help the team, that is down to man management. I had the best manager as a player and coach to learn how he dealt with players and it's about communication. I'll sit down and speak to the ones not playing, tell them what I expect of them.
"When you're at Man United there are a set of demands and one is to be a team player and I don't think anyone has been on the bench more than me. That's always my comeback to players, you might come on and make an impact."
Solskjaer spoke of the debt he owed to Alex Ferguson, who built a team that dominated English football, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.
Solskjaer will begin his United reign at Cardiff City, the only other Premier League club he has managed - he had a difficult eight-month spell in South Wales and was unable to save the club from relegation.
But he said he had learned from his mistakes.
Solskjaer would not be drawn on his relationship with Paul Pogba, who lost his place under Mourinho and was in conflict with the coach.
"It's about getting every player to the best, speaking to them, the training ground, the philosophy, principles, how we want to play," said Solskjaer, who coached Pogba in the reserves at Old Trafford.
"It doesn't matter what team you're coaching, they all want to have a picture of how you want to play, the qualities.
"They are quality players so it will be easier to get the players expressing themselves. You play with courage, go out there and express your skills."

LONDON • Pep Guardiola believes that Manchester United have lost the fear factor and that his Manchester City side are not afraid to go to Old Trafford any more in recent years.
For City, the Premier League title is at stake with Guardiola's men needing to win their remaining four matches to be sure of becoming the first side since United a decade ago to retain the title.

Should City fail to win at Old Trafford, Liverpool - historically United's fiercest rivals - will be just three games away from a first league title in 29 years.
The Reds have already set their highest ever points tally in the Premier League era of 88 to lead City by two points.
However, Guardiola's men have a game in hand and, should they move top once more with a win today, they would just need to see off Burnley, Leicester and Brighton to guarantee the title.
City could not have picked a better possible time to face United, but Guardiola also insisted that he is not getting carried away by their rivals' poor form of late.
"I expect the best United tomorrow, I am sure. They are proud. Prepare the game as always, their strong points, their weak points and try to win the game," the City manager added.
"It is a derby and, all the times we play against United, the derbies are always special games and the players do their best for the fans and the club."
The Spaniard also expressed his support for United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, saying that managers do not have it easy when things do not go their way.
"I am close to Solskjaer, I understand his position perfectly," he added. "I understand his position because it happens to all the managers around the world.

CARDIFF (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first test as Manchester United's caretaker manager will come in familiar surroundings as the Norwegian returns to Cardiff City on Saturday (Dec 22), hoping to fare better than he did during an ill-fated nine-month spell with the Welsh side in 2014.
Solskjaer's appointment was described as designed to put a smile back on the face of everyone at the club after the confrontational end to Jose Mourinho's two-and-a-half years in charge.
The new man's first act on his return to the club's Carrington training ground was reportedly to gift a bar of Norwegian chocolate to the club's long-serving receptionist - a gesture of the human qualities United know they are getting.
"The smiling assassin sums him up," former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who played with Solskjaer, told the BBC. "He's a lovely fella but Ole will let people know if he's not happy with them." The best way for him to lighten to mood quickly will be with results on the pitch.
A 3-1 defeat by Liverpool last weekend left United 19 points off the league leaders and 11 points adrift of the top four, but Solskjaer can look forward to a relatively forgiving fixture list over the festive period.
After visiting the Cardiff City Stadium, the Red Devils host Huddersfield and Bournemouth before travelling to Newcastle on January 2.
Solskjaer's presence rekindles memories of United's golden age, but also serves as a stark reminder of how far the club have fallen since the retirement of Alex Ferguson in 2013.

 
 
 
 
In 11 seasons under Ferguson as a predatory striker, Solskjaer scored 126 goals, including the one that famously won the Champions League final in 1999 as part of a treble of major trophies.
Yet, doubts remain over whether Solskjaer's appointment as caretaker boss until the end of the season is based too strongly on sentimentality than someone with the right mix of motivational and tactical prowess to get United not only competing again in the Premier League, but who can push Paris Saint-Germain in a challenging Champions League last-16 tie.
His time at Cardiff that resulted in just three wins in 18 Premier League games, relegation and being sacked early the next season after a poor start in the Championship does not offer much cause for optimism.
But two spells in charge of Molde in his homeland have been far more successful and Solskjaer also started his managerial career working as United's reserve coach, where he oversaw Paul Pogba among others.
The French World Cup winner's frosty relationship with Mourinho was a major factor in the Portuguese's failure to build on winning the League Cup and Europa League in his first season at Old Trafford.
Pogba has started United's last three Premier League games on the bench, but is expected to return to the starting XI after Solskjaer claimed earlier this year he would "build the team around him".
Solskjaer must also find the right defence to offer David de Gea more protection. The Spaniard has conceded more goals in the Premier League this season (29) in 17 games than the whole of the previous campaign as Mourinho persistently changed his backline to no effect.
In attacking areas, Mourinho's dismissal could also provide a fresh start for Juan Mata and Anthony Martial, while £50 million (S$86.7 million) summer recruit Fred, who did not even make the bench at Anfield last weekend, may now be given the chance to flourish.
