Football: Returning Ozil has Arsenal future says Emery

LONDON (AFP) - Mesut Ozil will return to the Arsenal squad for Saturday's (Dec 22) Premier League visit of Burnley, with manager Unai Emery saying he believes the midfielder has a future at the Emirates Stadium.
Ozil did not make the substitutes' bench for the League Cup quarter-final defeat to rivals Tottenham in midweek and has been on the fringes of the team in recent weeks.
He missed four recent games with a back problem but has started just once since November 11 - and that was a Europa League dead rubber at home to Qarabag.
The 30-year-old was a mainstay in the Gunners side under previous manager Arsene Wenger but Emery has shown he has no issue with keeping the club's highest-paid player on the sidelines.
Asked if Ozil will be in the squad to face Burnley, Emery said: "Yes. I want every player with a good mentality to help us and give us their characteristics and quality. We need Mesut Ozil.
"Every player wants to play and be OK to help the team when we need. The frustration is the same for everybody when they didn't play in a match.
"But I spoke with him and with regularity in the season. I am telling him what we need from him and he has the commitment to help us and the quality and the characteristics to help us when the team needs his moments in the pitch in one game. Tomorrow he is in the 18 players, in the squad."
Ozil's lack of game-time has led to rumours linking him with a January move away from the club, although when asked if the former Germany international has a future at Arsenal, Emery replied: "Yes, why not?"
It remains to be seen what role Ozil plays at the weekend but it appears unlikely that captain Laurent Koscielny will feature.
The 33-year-old has recently returned from a serious Achilles issue that had kept him out since May.
He started against both Qarabag and Southampton and came on at the interval against Spurs but, despite being without a number of injured defenders, Emery is keen not to ask too much of Koscielny at a delicate stage of his comeback.
"Koscielny is OK but he played two matches this week and tomorrow will be a lot for him," he said.
"We also need to be calm with him, to take time for a lot of matches before he continues playing. But I trust him and we have solutions for who can play in this position."

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester United's Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez is facing up to a six-week spell on the sidelines due to a knee ligament injury, according to coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
"He might be out for, it was a bad knee injury, so if it is four weeks or six weeks. Hopefully he will recover quickly," Solskjaer told a news conference on Tuesday (March 5) ahead of his team's Champions League last-16 second leg against Paris St Germain.

Sanchez could return for United's last two league games against Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City, but any setback in his rehabilitation would mean he has played his last match this season.
United are already without a host of players for Wednesday's clash at PSG due to injury, while midfielder Paul Pogba is suspended for the tie.
They trail 2-0 on aggregate after losing the first leg at Old Trafford.

SINGAPORE - Aaron Kok has been to Anfield 16 times but the 17th time might be the most memorable of them all.
Or not.
The travel agency owner , who regularly organises trips to Liverpool's home ground, is bringing 45 other fellow Reds fans for the final game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday (May 12).
The group will join thousands of supporters on Merseyside hoping to will Liverpool to their first top-flight title since 1990.
Kok, who leaves on Saturday (May 11), said: "I have a few friends who are already there and they've said there's a very festive mood there because everyone has been buzzing from the Champions League win."
"It's a dream for every fan to visit Anfield, to be able to go to the grounds and watch the team that they support. It will be a crazy day and everyone will be enjoying themselves with the atmosphere in Liverpool."
But with the odds stacked against them, Kok, 42, admitted the title might be out of Liverpool's hands.

Fellow Reds fan and estate planner S.Kavindran, 36, is also holding on to that dream.
"One thing about Liverpool that's very different from other football clubs is that the whole Anfield vibe is not just a football ground, it's a holy ground.
"In the last few games we've been scoring late to win so I'm hopeful that we'll be able to pull it off again.
"Even if we fall short, we have to give it to the team. The way that they played the whole season, none of the other teams gave City a fight like we did."
Knowing a win at Brighton will secure City back-to-back Premier League titles, their fans here are largely optimistic.
Civil servant and Manchester City Singapore Supporters committee member Haizam Shah, 34, noted Brighton's improved recent form (1-1 draws against Newcastle and Arsenal) but believes the Citizens will not falter at the final hurdle.
He said: "Brighton are already safe from relegation, they have nothing to play for. But Liverpool are playing Wolves who are doing quite well. I won't say Brighton are pushovers but I'm confident in my team, that's for sure."
Jess Chen, who is self employed, has been supporting the Sky Blues since 1995. The 37-year-old said: "It's unbelievable seeing them transform from a team fighting relegation to where we are today. We're enjoying every moment and not taking anything for granted.
"Even if we don't win, we can't really blame anyone because the team has surpassed all expectations. They got maximum points since their last defeat (to Newcastle United in January) so you really can't ask for more.
"They've had several challenging tests in the final period in terms of quality of opponents and pressure from Liverpool. The toughest part is already past them so now it's just about crossing the line and finishing strong."

LONDON â€¢ While the Old Trafford faithful are hopeful more tales can be sung about "the legend of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer" when Manchester United welcome Huddersfield in what will be his first home game tomorrow, Ashley Young is seeking to temper expectations despite their "crazy week".
The 45-year-old stand-in manager went back to basics at Cardiff on Saturday to provide an antidote to the misery of the Jose Mourinho era, as United scored five goals in an English Premier League game since Alex Ferguson's last match in May 2013.
But, while Solskjaer will field a similar attacking line-up at home to keep the "feel-good factor" going, Young has urged his teammates to "concentrate on what happens on the pitch, not off it".
He said: "We have lots of games coming up over the Christmas period and it is about recovering in the right way, and we just have to concentrate on each game coming up and not look too far ahead.
"You go out to do a job and go out and play football. That is what every single player in the squad has been doing and obviously, there has been a change of manager... A lot of the press will talk about us, but Huddersfield is our focus."
The wing-back admitted that Solskjaer's positive demeanour had been a refreshing change to the sullen manner often exhibited by Mourinho.
He joked: "I don't think he has stopped smiling. He was like that as a player, he always has a smile on his face and that can reflect down on to the team which is a good thing."
United captain Antonio Valencia also felt the mood had lifted around the club.
Despite having been left out of the match-day squad in Wales, the defender, who has made only four league appearances this term after being ostracised by Mourinho, remains convinced that under Solskjaer's watch, a top-four place is still within their grasp. The Red Devils are eight points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.
He said: "Nobody is giving up at all. You know there is half a season left to play so it's all about working hard, battling and playing well.
"We know we have got the quality within the squad to be able to do that. The main thing is to get everyone together after Christmas and it is a great fact we don't have to travel as it's at our doorstep. Playing in front of our fans is always a special occasion.
"We are getting the chance to make them happy and, hopefully, (we can) put any recent bad results behind us to get into good form again."
With the Terriers mired in the relegation zone after five league defeats on the trot, United have an opportunity to close the gap and Nemanja Matic believes they can put David Wagner's men to the sword by following Solskjaer's mantra of "more forward play".
However, pundit and ex-United player Gary Neville has urged caution as one swallow does not make a summer, insisting it was too early to make a judgment call on the Norwegian's managerial credentials.
Speaking on his own podcast, the former United defender said: "There was an immediate bounce and impact from Ole, however it was Cardiff and we need to see if they can do it over six months."

Palace captain Milivojevic was pleased to see his side get back on winning form, saying: â€œItâ€™s very big, a massive three points for us. I think we deserved it after everything. Weâ€™ve had many games where we scored but lost in the end and thankfully we broke that today.
â€œWinning at home is very important because, for the fans, from last season, we took many points here in our stadium and itâ€™s very important to have taken that back for our team and our confidence.â€Â
Manager Hodgson told the BBC: â€œIn the first half I thought we were very good. We lost Cheikhou Kouyate in the second half and when he had come off it handed the ascendancy to Leicester. We then had to make certain we worked hard and ground out the victory.
â€œWe did not concede that many chances and the one we did, that I thought they would score (from), we had a stroke of fortune.â€Â
Leicester manager Claude Puel said his side were inconsistent. â€œI think we did not start the game with the right intensity. We played a poor first half, it was not enough,â€ he told the BBC.
â€œWe came back in the second half with a good intensity and quality. We had three or four chances to come back into the game. I think we deserved to come back but it is a big disappointment because we need the points.

SYDNEY (REUTERS) - The 17th Asian Cup finals will be the biggest in the 62-year history of the tournament but even with 24 teams battling it out, it is hard to look much beyond regional powers Iran, Japan and South Korea as potential champions.
Australia will be hoping to join that trio and Saudi Arabia as multiple winners of the continental crown as they defend the title they won on home soil four years ago.
The Socceroos triumph came at the end of a highly successful staging of a tournament played out in front of bumper crowds that has left the United Arab Emirates with much to live up to.
The Emiratis, playing hosts for a second time after 1996 when they reached the final, showed with their recent staging of Fifa's Club World Cup, though, that there is a passion for the game that can be awoken by local success.
Al Ain's run to the final against Real Madrid brought passionate crowds to the stadiums of Abu Dhabi and provided a welcome pre-tournament boost to a national team that has hardly set the world alight under Italian Alberto Zaccheroni.
It is fair to say, though, that Real also brought more world class footballers to the Emirates than the Asian Cup will with only South Korea skipper Son Heung-min likely to register with many casual football fans outside the Asia-Pacific.
That does not mean there will not be plenty of skilful football on display as the cream of the world's most populous continent contest the equivalent of the European Championship and Copa America.
The world's most populous countries will both be represented but neither China nor India are expected to be around at the business end of the tournament.
The Indians would probably not have qualified without the expansion from 16 teams, while China appear to have stagnated under the guidance of Italian World Cup winner Marcello Lippi.

For all the class on the ball that Mooy can provide when fit, though, Australia's title defence is most likely to rest on their ability to find the net now that the totemic Tim Cahill has finally hung up his personalised boots.

Iraq did just that with their fairytale run to the title in 2007 and the Lions of Mesopotamia have been drawn to play neighbours Iran in Group D.
Iran have had their traditional uncertain run-up to the tournament but are always a force to be reckoned with in Asia and an end to their 43-year wait for a fourth title cannot be discounted.
Carlos Queiroz's side went out of the last Asian Cup on penalties to Iraq in a thrilling quarter-final played out in a magnificent atmosphere in Canberra.
If their Jan 16 group match in Dubai comes anywhere close to matching that, and the tournament can produce a few more clashes with similar drama and passion, the fans that do turn up in the Emirates will be in for a rare treat.
