Football: AC Milan miss out on top-four finish in Serie A despite win over SPAL

MILAN (REUTERS) - Former European Cup winners AC Milan endured a bittersweet 3-2 win at SPAL in the last round of the Italian Serie A, finishing the campaign outside the top four after their nearest rivals both booked their Champions League berths on Sunday (May 26).
The result left Milan fifth on 68 points, one behind third-placed Atalanta and fourth-placed city rivals Inter, meaning they will have to be content with the Europa League next season.
Atalanta came from behind to beat Sassuolo 3-1 at home while Inter eked out a 2-1 win against relegated Empoli at the San Siro.
"I am happy with the development of my players, I think many of them have improved a lot," said AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso, whose future with the club is uncertain. "We can still get better although it will not be easy to improve this season's 68 points.
"The biggest regret is that in the last few months we have not played well and we have lost too many points, but all in all, our work has been good. There are regrets but also pride. I've congratulated the squad for what they have given me this season."
Despite his team making the Champions League, Inter coach Luciano Spalletti's own future is also uncertain, with media reports suggesting that the club want to replace him with former Juventus and Chelsea coach Antonio Conte.
His men missed a penalty, conceded an equaliser, grabbed a late winner and survived a siege on their goal before beating Empoli 2-1 while sending their luckless opponents into Serie B.

"I expected a match like this," he said. "It was always going to be a night of suffering. We needed to put our hearts into this match and we did. I'm very unhappy to see Empoli in Serie B, I have a lot of friends there. They deserved to be saved. But we never gave up until the end."

Families want search for missing pilot to continue
LONDON â€¢ The families of footballer Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson have urged British authorities to continue to search for the missing pilot.
Sala's body was recovered on Wednesday from the wreckage of the plane that plunged into the English Channel on Jan 21, but Ibbotson remains missing after the search was terminated due to bad weather.
Yesterday, his family launched a fundraising campaign to find his remains.
"As a family we are relying on the kindness of the good hearted people to help us raise the much needed funds to help us find our beloved Dad, Husband and Son," the GoFundMe page said.
In a statement released on Friday, Sala's family had also said they were "hoping that the authorities will do their best to find him".
The campaign aims to raise Â£300,000 (S$527,000). If successful, it would mean the tragedy has sparked three hunts. The first one ended on Jan 24, before a second, privately-funded one began.
Cardiff, whom Sala signed for in a club-record Â£15 million (S$26.3 million) transfer just two days before his doomed flight from Nantes to the Welsh capital on Jan 21, have offered to pay for the repatriation of his body to Argentina.
Club manager Neil Warnock said: "It brings the family peace and offers them comfort.
"When I spoke to (his sister) Romina, she couldn't let it go. I wouldn't have been able to let it go. To start that up (the online crowdfunding campaign to engage the services of shipwreck hunter David Mearns) as they did and (to) get such a response is amazing."
Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan said the club "have offered to... arrange to take Emiliano back to rest with his family in Argentina. Even though he will be there, his soul will always be in our hearts".
An inquest into the tragedy is likely to open next week.

AMSTERDAM â€¢ Cristiano Ronaldo's return to fitness could be vital to Juventus' bid to end their 23-year wait for a Champions League trophy as they head to Ajax today with uncertainty over whether the most expensive player in the club's history will play.
The â‚¬100 million (S$152.5 million) summer signing from Real Madrid has not played in a month for the Serie A leaders since he scored a second-leg hat-trick to dump Atletico Madrid out in the round of 16.
He was rested in the subsequent 2-0 league defeat at Genoa and then picked up a thigh injury on international duty two weeks ago.
But Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri believes that the Portugal captain will be raring to go ahead of the first leg of the quarter-final, the clubs' first meeting in 16 years.
He said: "He (Ronaldo) always feels ready. We are confident of having him at Ajax on Wednesday.
"In matches of this kind, he gets really excited and enthusiastic. Having him gives us a great advantage."
His confidence also stems from the 34-year-old's return to full-time training on Monday and he boarded the team plane that flew to the Netherlands yesterday.
Teammate Joao Cancelo also told Sky Italia that Ronaldo had "committed himself to do everything possible" to be there and help the team.
The Portugal defender, who confirmed he had shrugged off a calf issue, added: "Cristiano's training, he's a serious professional.
"I really think he'll be called up. We'll see if he plays from the first minute or come on later. The coach will decide. I am fit and ready to play, I will play in Amsterdam."
Ronaldo himself has given no updates on his injury, apart from a short video posted on his social media accounts, looking relaxed while spending time off with his partner Georgina Rodriguez and son.
If the record scorer (124) in the competition can take to the field, it will be a psychological boost for Juventus, who have gone on record saying that they moved for him last July with the sole purpose of ending their barren run in Europe.
Allegri does, however, have other attacking options in Argentina forward Paulo Dybala, Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic and Italy forward Federico Bernardeschi.
He also has a trump card in Moise Kean, one of the more exciting players to burst onto the Italian football scene in years. The 19-year-old has taken his chance in Ronaldo's absence with five goals in as many league games for Juventus, who are just one point away from sealing an eighth straight Italian title.

Championship side Bristol City defeated top flight basement club Huddersfield by the same score thanks to Josh Brownhillâ€™s 72nd-minute goal and Crystal Palace left it late to see off fourth-tier Grimsby 1-0.
Meanwhile, second division Derby, managed by former England midfielder Frank Lampard, came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Premier League strugglers Southampton.
Newcastle were also held to a draw, a Matt Ritchie penalty five minutes from time ensuring a 1-1 result against Championship club Blackburn.
But Arsenal, the record 13-times FA Cup winners, won 3-0 at Blackpool.
Both Morata and Fabregas have been linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window â€“ the latter is reportedly set to join a Monaco side managed by former Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry.
Captain for the day Fabregas saw his poor 30th-minute penalty saved by Luke Steele but two goals in the space of 10 minutes in the second half from the previously misfiring Morata, settled the tie.

PODGORICA â€¢ European football's governing body Uefa yesterday charged Montenegro over racist behaviour by their fans towards England players during their Euro 2020 qualifier.
Gareth Southgate's men were irrepressible as they ran out 5-1 winners. However, the rout was soured by the prolonged racist abuse, leading to calls for stadium bans.
Defender Danny Rose was subjected to monkey chants while forward Raheem Sterling, who called for Montenegro supporters to be banned from matches, was also targeted on Monday night.
Calling the abuse as "not acceptable", England manager Southgate told TV channel ITV Sport: "I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game. There's no doubt in my mind that happened."
And Uefa has taken action by starting disciplinary proceedings, with the case set to be heard on May 16. Montenegro could face a partial or full stadium closure for their next qualifying match.
But Southgate, whose side ran riot on the night through Michael Keane, Ross Barkley's brace and a penalty from Harry Kane before Sterling added gloss to the scoreline, felt "sanctions are worthless if there is nothing alongside that to help educate people".
The 48-year-old added: "There's an innocence about young people that is only influenced by older people. We have to make sure the education is right for everybody, in our country, the same."
He also said he had yet to talk to Sterling, who responded to the taunts by cupping his hands to his ears towards a section of Montenegro fans when he scored late on.
The Manchester City player told Sky Sports after the Group A game: "I didn't hear (the chants) personally, but Danny made it clear and (made me) aware that's what they were doing, so I just wanted to show them they were going to need more than that to upset and stop us.
"It's a shame to see this keep going on. It's now time for the people in charge to put a stamp on it. You can fine someone, but what's that going to do? You've got to punish the fans who can't come to the games.

"You've got to do something that will really make them think twice because if their team can't play with fans, it's going to be difficult for them."
He later took to social media to revel in the resounding victory, tweeting: "Best way to silence the haters... (and yeah I mean racists)."
Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi, who became the second-youngest England player to start a competitive game at the Podgorica City Stadium, also felt the provocative goading was "not right".
Admitting it had marred his career milestone, the 18-year-old told beIN Sports: "You are trying to enjoy the moment but, when you are hearing stuff like that from the fans, it's unacceptable.
"I don't think discrimination should be anywhere - we are equal. Me and Rosey heard it, the 'Oooh, Oooh' monkey stuff.
"Hopefully, Uefa will deal with it."
The unsavoury scenes drew swift condemnation from other parties, with football's anti-discrimination group Kick it Out tweeting: "Disgraceful to hear racist chants directed at black England players this evening.
"As we've argued countless times, it's time for Uefa to take strong, decisive action - fines won't do. Extended stadium bans or tournament expulsion are what's needed."
Pundit Ian Wright agreed, claiming that a slap on the wrist would be little deterrence. The former Arsenal striker told ITV: "They (Montenegro) will be fined a pittance, and we'll get the same thing again here the next time or somewhere else. It's not going to stop them."

LONDON â€¢ Before the Bournemouth game, Jurgen Klopp had called on his Liverpool side to enjoy the "excitement" of what promises to be a thrilling title race rather than being bogged down by the nerves of recent displays.
And the Reds duly answered the call at Anfield on Saturday, as they made a statement in not just returning to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over the Cherries, but the manner in which they regained a three-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring with a clinical header, Georginio Wijnaldum's delightful dink doubled their lead and a flowing counter-attack three minutes into the second half delivered the third goal when Roberto Firmino's unselfish back-heel allowed Mohamed Salah to sweep home his 20th strike of the season.
Liverpool defender James Milner, deputising for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, was thrilled by the combination work of Firmino, Mane and Salah.
"The front three were brilliant all day. Some of their link-up play was impossible to defend: the movement, the understanding, the one-touch play. Probably the only disappointing thing is we didn't score more," he told the club's website.
Klopp said he had not needed to listen to any of the outside criticism which came Liverpool's way over the past few days to know a reaction was needed, but a reaction was what he got.
"We are very self-critical. It was clear we were not happy with the two performances," said the 51-year-old of the 1-1 draws with Leicester and West Ham. "We want to play convincing football, we want to perform and that was the reaction we wanted to show."

TERRIFIC THREESOME

Wijnaldum's return was Klopp's only change from the draw at West Ham on Monday and the Dutch midfielder's presence made a huge difference although he did not stay at the team's hotel the night before the game because of illness.

"But playing a game like this shows us - the character and the mentality of these boys are the only reasons we are where we are."
Salah was denied by a string of Boruc saves, but finally extended his lead as the Premier League's top scorer after a wonderful flick from Firmino teed him up.
While City continue to fight for silverware on four fronts, a second warm weather training trip in a matter of weeks now lies in wait for Liverpool, thanks to their early exit from the FA Cup. The Reds are not in action again until Bayern Munich's visit for the Champions League last-16, first-leg clash on Feb 19.
