Sarri slammed over Kepa but says issue settled
LONDON • Former Liverpool manager-turned-pundit Graeme Souness has blasted Maurizio Sarri's decision to recall Kepa Arrizabalaga but, as far as the Chelsea manager is concerned, the Spaniard has "paid the price" for his insubordination.
Kepa returned to Sarri's starting XI after being dropped for the previous game against Tottenham following his infamous refusal to be substituted in the League Cup final defeat by Manchester City.
While the Spain goalkeeper produced a fine display in the Blues' 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham on Sunday, Souness felt the Italian had sent out the wrong message to his squad by reinstating Kepa, insisting he should have "left him out of this game and beyond".
He told Sky Sports: "It was a sad reflection on where we are with the modern player. He's 24, done nothing in the game and feels he can challenge the manager like that."
However, Sarri insisted that Kepa had justified his selection by helping the team move to 56 points and within two of fourth spot in the race for Champions League football and the "situation was closed".
He told Sky: "We were trying to involve Tottenham in the (top-four) fight and now they are involved. Better two teams for four places than three for one place. He played very well, it was a normal decision (to bring him back). There wasn't another way, but Kepa is a man. He understood and reacted really very well. He made a mistake, but now that is enough."
Kepa played his part at Craven Cottage, keeping out efforts from Aleksandar Mitrovic, Tom Cairney and Joe Bryan as his side recorded a second straight league win courtesy of goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Jorginho.
Sarri was especially delighted for the latter, who has borne the brunt of criticism from Chelsea fans for being an underwhelming presence in midfield and having not previously found the net from open play.
He added: "My opinion about Jorginho is the same. He is a great player, one of the most important in Europe in that position.
"He is not at his top level physically, but could have scored three times today. In a couple of weeks, he will be at his top."
REUTERS
Kepa was fined one week's wages by Chelsea for his behaviour, but Sarri appeared keen to draw a line under the damaging row when he faced the media after the Tottenham game. Asked if Kepa was still his number one, Sarri said: "Of course. I think it was the right decision.

Football: Resurgent Valencia inflict ninth La Liga defeat on Real Madrid

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Real Madrid's harrowing campaign continued as they fell to a ninth defeat in La Liga and their first since coach Zinedine Zidane returned as they were deservedly beaten 2-1 away by a resurgent Valencia on Wednesday (April 3).
Portugal international Goncalo Guedes fired Valencia into the lead in the 35th minute with a thumping shot from inside the area which was too powerful for Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Madrid had played well until conceding, but lost momentum after the goal and Valencia continued to threaten into the second half, finally doubling their lead with a header by defender Ezequiel Garay from a corner in the 83rd.
Karim Benzema headed in a consolation goal for Madrid in stoppage time, shortly after Zidane's side had a penalty decision overturned after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review ruled Sergio Ramos was offside.
Madrid are stuck in third on 57 points, 13 behind La Liga leaders Barcelona and five behind city rivals Atletico Madrid.
Valencia, who have reached the Copa del Rey final and the quarter-finals of the Europa League, have Champions League qualification in their sights after climbing up to fifth in the table on 46 points, one behind fourth-placed Getafe.
The win extended their unbeaten run to 17 games in all competitions, their longest stretch without defeat in their 100-year history.
"We know that this has been a difficult year and we are working hard to make sure we come back stronger next season and I'm sure we will," Madrid midfielder Casemiro told reporters.
"We were in control for the first half then they scored and got more confident. We worked hard in the second half and tried to get back in the game but goals are what count. This defeat is difficult for us, we know we are not doing well but we must keep working."
It was Zidane's first away game since returning to the club after Santiago Solari was sacked last month, having won his first two games back against Celta Vigo and Huesca.
As he had promised ahead of the match, the Frenchman made sweeping changes from the team that had beaten Huesca, bringing back seven players including Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Navas as Isco and Gareth Bale dropped to the bench.
Madrid dominated the early stages but could not turn their possession to chances and once Valencia took the lead through Guedes they rarely looked like letting it slip.
Marcelino's side missed a gilt-edged chance to seal victory when Kevin Gameiro attempted a backheel pass towards Carlos Soler when it would have been easier to shoot at goal.
But Argentine Garay made up for his team mate's wastefulness by effectively sealing the points with a towering header from captain Dani Parejo's corner.

Football: Neymar to resume training on Wednesday after injury

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar will returning to training on Wednesday for "on-pitch tests" after two-and-a-half months out with a foot injury, the club said on Tuesday (April 2).
The world's most expensive player has been sidelined since hobbling off during a French Cup win over Strasbourg on Jan 23, missing PSG's Champions League last-16 defeat by Manchester United.
"@Neymarjr's recovery from injury is progressing well and he will return to training on Wednesday as scheduled for on-pitch tests," PSG said on Twitter.
"Club specialists will carry out a full medical and radiological assessment in two weeks' time."
PSG were hoping Neymar would be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final later this month, but the French side suffered a humiliating exit as United sensationally overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
The 27-year-old may be targeting a return for a potential French Cup final on April 27, should PSG get past Nantes in the last four on Wednesday.
Coach Thomas Tuchel said Tuesday that PSG will also be without Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Thomas Meunier against Nantes.

Football: London-born ex-Arsenal reserve Nico Yennaris makes China debut in 2-0 win over Philippines
Football: London-born ex-Arsenal reserve Nico Yennaris makes China debut in 2-0 win over Philippines

GUANGZHOU (AFP) - Nico Yennaris became the first foreign-born footballer to represent China when the former Arsenal reserve started in a 2-0 home win over the Philippines on Friday (June 7).
The 26-year-old midfielder was born in London and was an England youth international, but his mother is Chinese and the country is looking to naturalise footballers to rapidly improve its fortunes on the pitch.
Yennaris, who never broke through at Premier League club Arsenal, moved to Chinese Super League leaders Beijing Guoan at the start of the year and swapped nationalities from British to Chinese.
Known in China as Li Ke, there has been intense interest in his assimilation and he is having Mandarin lessons - he still gives interviews in English but appeared to have learnt the words to the national anthem.
The friendly against the Philippines in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou was also notable for the return as coach of Marcello Lippi.
The 71-year-old Italian World Cup winner left the post at the end of January after a 3-0 defeat by Iran in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup.
But following a failed stint by compatriot Fabio Cannavaro, Lippi is back at the helm and targeting qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Â
Yennaris, who spent five years at Brentford in England's second tier before moving to Beijing, was among eight changes from the Lippi side beaten by Iran.
The Philippines, ranked 124th in the world in Fifa's rankings, were obliging guests.
China, ranked 74th but with big ambitions under football-fan President Xi Jinping, deservedly went ahead in the 14th minute when midfielder Wu Xi prodded past Denmark-born goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard.
Midfielder Zhang Xizhe made it 2-0 on 54 minutes after more poor Philippine defending and Yennaris, who enjoyed a solid debut at the base of the hosts' midfield, was substituted a minute later.
The Philippines were reduced to 10 men soon after when Daisuke Sato earned a second yellow card.
China host Tajikistan in another friendly on Tuesday as they build up to qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. They begin in the autumn.
Lippi is reportedly eager to have the China-based Brazilian forwards Elkeson and Ricardo Goulart naturalised in time for them.
However, while Chinese football fans are supportive of Yennaris, many have expressed deep scepticism about doing the same with players who have no Chinese ancestry.

Football: England games showed Jurgen Klopp I can play further forward, says Jordan Henderson

LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says performing well in an advanced midfield position for England helped convince manager Jurgen Klopp he could play a more attacking role for his club.
Klopp has used Henderson mainly as a defensive midfielder since taking charge of Liverpool, asking the 28-year-old to curb his attacking instincts and shield the back four.
"I can do both positions and (Klopp) sees I can do both, it's basically what he wants and needs," Henderson told reporters.
"I felt more comfortable... in (an advanced) position for England, creating chances and doing what I enjoy doing.
"I feel as though I can do more in a position further forward. Me and the gaffer had a conversation. Obviously he saw the England games... and it was something he said he'd think about."
Klopp deployed Henderson on the right of his midfield trio in Liverpool's last two games and the captain rewarded the manager with decisive contributions in each match.
He came off the bench and scored the final goal in Liverpool's 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Friday (April 5) and helped create the second in their 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg win over Porto on Tuesday (April 9).
Â
Â
The addition of defensive midfielder Fabinho at the start of the season helped make the decision to move Henderson further forward easier.
"In the last couple of years there hasn't really been a player like Fabinho in that role, so I've had to adapt," Henderson said. "I just thought that might give me a bit more licence to get forward more."
Liverpool, who lead the Premier League table by two points having played one game more than second-placed Manchester City, host third-placed Chelsea on Sunday (April 14).

Football: Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester United and Tottenham confirmed for ICC Singapore

SINGAPORE - English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, along with Italian Serie A's top clubs Juventus and Inter Milan have been announced on Wednesday morning (March 27) as the teams playing in the International Champions Cup (ICC) in Singapore in July.
The pre-season tournament for Europe's top football clubs will be played in Singapore's National Stadium.
The Red Devils will take on Inter on July 20 and a day later, the Old Lady of Turin will meet Spurs.
Legends from the clubs - Dwight Yorke (United), Francesco Toldo (Inter), Fabrizio Ravanelli (Juventus) and Teddy Sheringham (Tottenham) were present at the launch at the Incubator, near the Padang.
With no World Cup and European Championship played in the summer, the stage is set for a galaxy of stars to play in Singapore, apart from the South American players involved in the Copa America.
Sheringham said: "There is nothing like seeing the teams in the flesh. And with no distraction of other big tournaments (in Europe), hopefully all the big players will be on show for our Asian fans."
Yorke added: "We know that Asia is one of our biggest markets and, certainly, Singapore is very important. We want to feel connected to our fanbase and we are excited to come back (to Singapore) and to improve our brand as well."
United's visit will be particularly exciting to its large fanbase here. The club last played in Singapore in 2001, when a side that featured Roy Keane, David Beckham and even goalkeeper Fabien Barthez playing up front defeated a Singapore Selection side 8-1, with Lions striker Indra Sahdan scoring for the hosts.
Former Italian international striker Ravanelli took the opportunity to indulge in some banter with Inter, saying: "We are different from Inter because we (Juventus) are always at the top. We are constantly expanding tactically but we also want to improve our knowledge and understanding of this part of the world."
In 2017, when the ICC first came to Singapore, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Inter Milan were the elite clubs that were invited.
Last year, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were the teams that battled it out at Kallang.

Football: Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri charged with misconduct over behaviour at home game against Burnley

(REUTERS) - Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has been charged with misconduct for his behaviour during Monday's (April 22) 2-2 English Premier League draw with Burnley, the English Football Association said.
The Chelsea coach was sent to the stands by referee Kevin Friend after becoming embroiled in a scuffle among players on the touchline in the dying moments of the game at Stamford Bridge.
Sarri did not carry out his post-match media duties, sending assistant coach Gianfranco Zola to fill in for him instead.
Zola told reporters at the time that Sarri had sought to get his players out of the scuffle but the referee had "misinterpreted" his intentions and that the Chelsea manager had been offended by a comment from the Burnley bench.
"Maurizio Sarri has been charged with misconduct in relation to his behaviour in the 94th minute of Monday's Premier League fixture between Chelsea and Burnley," the FA said in a statement on Wednesday (April 24).
The Chelsea manager has until 1700 GMT on Friday (midnight Saturday Singapore time) to responded to the charge, the governing body added.

Football: Grief in Sevilla as former star Jose Antonio Reyes killed in car crash

MADRID (AFP) - Former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Spain star Jose Antonio Reyes has been killed in a car crash, his hometown club Sevilla said on Saturday (June 1). He was 35.
Reyes, who shot to fame at Sevilla before a switch to Arsenal, followed by spells at Real and Atletico Madrid, was on the books with second-tier Spanish club Extremadura.
"We couldn't be confirming worse news. Beloved Sevilla star Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision. Rest in peace," Sevilla, where he spent two four-year spells, said on Twitter.
The emergency services in Andalusia and the authorities in the player's home town, Utrera, said Reyes died in an accident on the main road from Sevilla to Utrera. They said another member of his family also died and a third person was injured.
Spain captain Sergio Ramos, who is also from the province of Seville, came through the youth team just after Reyes and later played with him at Real Madrid also tweeted his grief.
"Broken. Shattered," wrote Ramos. "I have no words. All the affection for the family. We will always remember you, my friend! RIP brother."
Reyes won a European Under-21 title with Spain in 2002 and went on to play 21 times for Spain between 2003 and 2006, scoring four goals.
He won Premier League and FA Cup medals at Arsenal and came on as a late substitute when the Gunners lost the 2006 Champions League final to Barcelona.
He helped Sevilla win the Spanish second division in his first stint at the club. He won the Europa League five times, twice with Atletico Madrid and three times in his second spell at Sevilla.
He also won domestic league titles with Real Madrid and Benfica.
After leaving Sevilla in 2016, Reyes played for Espanyol, Cordoba and Xinjian Tianshan in China, before arriving at Extremadura this year as a free agent.
"With broken hearts we announce the news of our player Jose Antonio Reyes' death in a car crash and we ask for you to pray for his soul," Extremadura said.
Monchi, who overlapped with Reyes as a player at Sevilla and is now the club's director of football, also tweeted his sadness and referred to wingback Antonio Puerta, who died of a cardiac arrest playing for Sevilla in 2007.
"Impossible news to believe, impossible to digest," wrote Monchi. "What a left flank you are going to make, Antonio and you (Puerta), up there."

This is only the start for Reds: Klopp

MADRID • A first trophy in seven years for Liverpool, and a first win in seven finals for Jurgen Klopp.
The European Cup headed back to Anfield for the sixth time yesterday and their manager is confident there is much more to come, warning the rest of football's big boys that "this is still only the start".
A beaming Klopp revealed after Saturday's 2-0 Champions League final victory over Tottenham in Madrid that he had received a congratulatory phone call from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Three weeks ago, the Reds were denied a first English league title in 29 years by City, despite losing just once and racking up 97 points - the most by a team finishing second.
However, winning the Champions League has made up for disappointment in the Premier League, with Klopp admitting it was "maybe the best night of my life".
The German told BT Sport: "I'm so happy for the boys, I'm so happy for my family, they suffer every year when we go to a final... they deserve it more than anybody.
"Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank any more?" This is great for our development because it's always like we'd be doing good steps but people say, 'So what? You didn't win anything'.
"I'm interested really in development, but I get it, we have to win things and so it's really important that people don't ask now all the time about not winning things.
"Now we won something, and we will carry on, we want to win things, 100 per cent."
Of his brief exchange with Guardiola, he said: "We promised each other already that we will kick our butts next year again. We will go for everything (next season) and we'll see if we get something."
It was a sentiment shared by Virgil van Dijk, who was named Man of the Match. The Dutch defender said: "Obviously, we want to challenge for every trophy if possibl`e.
"We have the squad for it, but you've also seen it this year, you still have to do it and, hopefully, we can challenge City again next season for the title because I don't think they will go anywhere, so we won't go anywhere either."
Liverpool's celebrations moved to their home city yesterday as tens of thousands of fans lined the streets ahead of the team's trophy parade, which began in the suburbs at around 4pm (11pm Singapore time) and worked its way towards the city centre.
The Hodgetts family - dad Mark, 47, son Shane and daughter Keira, 16 - were in place holding special edition flags.
"We wanted to get tickets for Madrid but, obviously, this is the next best thing," said Mark Hodgetts.
"We just wanted to feel the atmosphere. We've been waiting so long - my daughter was only two when we last won it."

Spurs' New 'Superhero'
Spurs' New 'Superhero'

LONDON • On June 1, Tottenham have a shot at the ultimate prize.
If they overcome Liverpool in their first Champions League final, there will surely be statues erected, not just for Lucas Moura, but for all the players and manager Mauricio Pochettino.
As it stands, Brazil forward Moura is in line to have a bust outside their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium alongside one already planned for Bill Nicholson, the club's most successful manager with eight major trophies, including the 1961 double.
Christian Eriksen led the calls for his teammate to be enshrined after his hat-trick ensured Spurs went through 3-3 on away goals after the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tie with Ajax on Wednesday.
Having lost the first leg 1-0, Spurs got off to the worst possible start in Amsterdam, going 2-0 down on the night to goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech.
The reverse leg turned on its head after half-time, however, as Moura scored twice in quick succession before netting a 96th-minute effort to complete his treble - only the fifth player in the competition's history to do so in the semi-final stage.
The Denmark midfielder Eriksen said of the 26-year-old: "Today it was non-tactical, more of a fight and heart performance and Lucas Moura. He deserves it.
"It has been a roller-coaster of a season, for him to get us in the final, I hope he gets a statue in England after this. We are blown away."
Ironically, Moura, whose January 2018 arrival remains the last player Spurs have signed, would probably not have started the second leg had injured striker Harry Kane been fit.
But Pochettino has instilled an ethos that "the team is more important than any name".
The Argentinian, who has yet to win a major honour as a manager, can now end the term with the biggest prize in European football.
With the endgame close, Pochettino was understandably in tears, branding Moura a "superhero".
He said: "To have brought the club to the final of the Champions League is very close to a miracle.
"No one believed in us at the beginning of the season, we are so close, almost in the top four and in Madrid, playing the final.
"This amazing season in our new home and this chapter that we are going to close now, to close the chapter playing a final, and if we win, it would be an amazing book."
Pochettino also spoke of "no pain, no gain" in the aftermath - in reference to his five-year stint since arriving from Southampton, a period in which he has fought to establish the club as a top-four force in the Premier League and regulars in the Champions League.
Rival fans have long mocked his team's history of perennial underachievement as "doing a Spurs".
However, that has changed under Pochettino despite the lack of silverware. The 47-year-old has worked wonders with a comparatively smaller squad to the other "Big Six" teams and a non-existent budget; they are the only club in league history not to have bought any players in the last two transfer windows.
The possibilities for the future are endless. They are overwhelming favourites to finish in the top four again for their fourth straight Champions League campaign.
And while Spurs have won just one of their last 14 matches against the Reds, there will be no shortage of belief from Pochettino's players.
They might even have Kane back for the trip to Madrid, with the England striker telling BT Sport "rehab is going well".
For now, Pochettino will bask in the glow of a "50-year highlight" for Spurs, saying: "There will be time to talk about Liverpool.
"They are heroes too, and it's going to be an amazing final between two English teams."

Tebas, a lawyer by profession, has been at the helm of the Spanish Football League (LFP) since 2013. He has successfully worked on strengthening the finances of the country's 42 first and second division teams and has the stated aim of pushing for La Liga to compete with the Premier League on an economic level.

Man United Miss Out On Top Four After Draw With Huddersfield

5th min
AJAX 1-0 (AGGREGATE: AJAX 2-0) An early goal like the first-leg winner by Donny van de Beek. Captain Matthijs de Ligt gets away from Kieran Trippier into the box and outjumps Dele Alli to plant a header that leaves Hugo Lloris rooted.
35th
AJAX 2-0 (AGG: AJAX 3-0) Hakim Ziyech's wicked left-foot curler, set up by Dusan Tadic, comes as Trippier fails to track back after looking for a foul in vain for a Tadic high foot. Game over?
55th
AJAX 2-1 (AGG: AJAX 3-1) Not quite. A sweeping Spurs counter-attack, started by Danny Rose who nutmegs de Ligt, ends up with Lucas Moura reducing the deficit after exchanging passes with Alli. Game on.
59th
2-2 (AGG: AJAX 3-2) A goalkeeper-defender mix-up, created by the hugely influential substitute Fernando Llorente's point-blank effort, allows Moura to make space in a crowded box to set up a grandstand finish.
96th
SPURS 3-2 (AGG: 3-3) As the clock just ticks past the five minutes of added time, Llorente knees the ball to Alli, who lays it off cleverly for the charging Moura to slot into the corner for his hat-trick. Spurs go through on away goals.
The Denmark midfielder Eriksen said of the 26-year-old: "Today it was non-tactical, more of a fight and heart performance and Lucas Moura. He deserves it.
CAST IN STONE
Today it was non-tactical, more of a fight and heart performance and Lucas Moura. He deserves it. It has been a roller-coaster of a season, for him to get us in the final, I hope he gets a statue in England after this.
CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN, Tottenham midfielder, on Brazilian teammate Lucas Moura.

ABU DHABI • Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu admitted that his side were lucky to survive a scare to beat Turkmenistan 3-2 in their Asian Cup opener yesterday.
The Samurai Blue thrived at last year's World Cup in Russia, reaching the last 16 before they lost to the mighty Belgians.
But they had to fight back from a goal down at half-time against yesterday's 127th-ranked opponents in their Group F clash in Abu Dhabi, courtesy of a quickfire double from Yuya Osako.
"Somehow we managed to win," a relieved Moriyasu said in an interview immediately after the match.
"I thought that the first match will be a difficult fight... That is the difficulty of this competition.
"But the players will not stop playing and they will fight as a team.
"I think that it was good to win today for everyone... For the supporters who are here today and the supporters who are supporting in front of the TV in Japan."
Turkmenistan captain Arslanmurat Amanov put the underdogs ahead after just 26 minutes at the Al Nahyan Stadium, unleashing a ferocious long-range drive that flew into the top corner.
But Osako produced a smart turn to finish inside the box for Japan's equaliser 10 minutes into the second half, after sustained pressure from the four-time Asian champions, who were playing without their experienced stars Shinji Kagawa and Shinji Okazaki.
The Werder Bremen striker then put Japan in front four minutes later, tapping into an empty net after Yuto Nagatomo's dinked pass over goalkeeper Mamed Orazmuhamedov.
Ritsu Doan added a deflected third after 70 minutes, but Ahmet Atayev smashed home a penalty 11 minutes from time for the Emeralds to ensure a nervous finish for the Japanese.
Japan, who have failed to progress from the group stage only once since their debut in the competition in 1988, will take on Oman next and Moriyasu added that he is already looking forward to the match on Sunday.
"We are improving in all parts and winning while growing in this competition. We will prepare for the best against Oman, do our best in the game. I want to aim for growth and also a victory," he said.
Turkmenistan coach Yazguly Hojageldiyew was happy with his side's display despite the loss.
"I was actually surprised how well we did in the first half," he said. "We lost our way a bit in the second half, but we're not out of it yet. We'll give everything in the next two games."
In another match yesterday, Uzbekistan joined Japan at the top on three points with a 2-1 win over Oman. Uzbek captain Odil Ahmedov gave his side the lead in the 34th minute before Mohsin Al Ghassani equalised in the 72nd minute. Eldor Shomurodov scored an 85th-minute winner for the 2011 semi-finalists.

Football: Footballer asks not to be paid while out injured

LONDON • Ishmael Miller has asked Tranmere Rovers to stop paying him while he is out injured.
The 31-year-old striker joined the English fourth-tier football club on Jan 7 and scored on his debut in a 3-1 win at Cheltenham Town five days later. But he has been sidelined by a hamstring injury suffered in the next match, against Swindon Town in League Two.
In a world of record transfer fees and wages in football, Tranmere manager Micky Mellon described the gesture as "fantastic".
"At this moment, Ishmael's not getting paid by Tranmere," Mellon was reported as saying in the British media.
"He came in to see me about a week ago and he said to me, 'Stop my wages until I get fit again.'
"I need everybody to understand how big a gesture that is. He wants Tranmere Rovers to keep moving forward while he's out injured, which is possibly the first time I've heard that."
He praised the player for putting the club's welfare first, saying the gesture "says an awful lot about him as a man".
"If he had kept getting paid and waited until he got fit, nobody would've blinked an eyelid as that's what's supposed to happen," he said. "People might say, 'Well, he's in a position where he can do that.'
"Well, he doesn't have to do that. He knows how tight things are at this club and where we're at in terms of what we're trying to do."
Miller, a former player for West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest, Blackpool and Huddersfield, had joined Tranmere until the end of the season after being released by Oldham Athletic.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk is back in training but remains doubtful for the Premier League leaders' home match against Leicester City at Anfield on Wednesday (Jan 30).
Manager Juergen Klopp reserved judgement on the Dutch international's availability amid fears that the player, who went sick after a warm weather training break in Dubai, could miss out.
"Virgil was a little bit ill, but he trained yesterday and will train today, so we will see," Klopp told reporters on Tuesday.
Van Dijk, who joined from Southampton a year ago for a reported £75 million (S$130 million), is a key pillar in the tight defence that has helped Liverpool soar to the top of the table.
Liverpool have limited options in defence with right back Trent Alexander-Arnold needing more time to recover from a knee injury and James Milner suspended.
"We will play with a right back. Or maybe a wing-back... I have no clue what we are doing tomorrow to be honest," joked Klopp.
Closest rivals Manchester City can close the gap to one point when they play at Newcastle United on Tuesday, but Klopp said that was of no concern.
"If we win the game, we are not interested in other results," said the German.
"How can we change the approach? I've said a few times, I expect City to win every game and it makes sense that you think like this.
"I really believe in that you have to do your own work and your own job if you want to have something, don't be concentrated on other teams," he added.
"I expect to be one point up before the game tomorrow, and that doesn't bother me."
Liverpool, not in FA Cup contention, will have had an 11-day break since beating Crystal Palace 4-3 on Jan 19 but Leicester are similarly rested.
Klopp said a game in that period would have been difficult, given injury and sickness.
"It was good that we didn't have to play, even though the cup competitions are important. It would really not have been possible for a lot of players," he said.
"We had a few more days and could wait for one or two players - we have to see if they will be really available for the game tomorrow."

Football: Belgian forward Eden Hazard joins Real Madrid

MADRID (AFP) - Eden Hazard completed his long-awaited move from Chelsea to Real Madrid on Friday (June 7) and could become the Spanish club's most expensive signing in their history.
Real said Hazard, 28, had signed a five-year contract.
His contract at the Premier League club was due to expire next year but the Blues drove a hard bargain for the forward, who will reportedly cost Madrid an initial €100 million (S$154 million), with another 45 million in potential add-ons.
The full amount would trump the €101 million Madrid paid Tottenham for Gareth Bale and the €91 million they spent to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.
An unveiling at the Santiago Bernabeu is expected next week, once Hazard returns from international duty with Belgium, who play Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan on Saturday and Scotland on Tuesday.
It means Madrid's spending spree is picking up pace following the arrivals of defender Eder Militao and striker Luka Jovic from Porto and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.
But Hazard is the gem Zinedine Zidane can build his new team around and brings the kind of stardust Madrid fans have craved ever since the sale of Ronaldo to Juventus last summer.
Ronaldo's departure created a void up front that Madrid failed to fill last season, the team struggling for goals en route to finishing 19 points behind Barcelona in La Liga and crashing out to Ajax in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Hazard, who scored 110 goals in seven seasons at Chelsea, will be expected to help plug the gap has long-been admired by Zidane and Madrid president Florentino Perez.
"We have wanted to sign Hazard for several years and I hope he will come this year," Perez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero last month.
Less clear is where Hazard will fit into Zidane's starting line-up. Assuming he plays in his favoured position on the left of a front three, it would mean displacing the 18-year-old Brazilian, Vinicius Junior, who enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough year last season.
Chelsea said the club had tried to persuade Hazard to stay.
"Although it is with sadness we say goodbye to Eden - and we made it absolutely clear to him the club wished him to stay - we respect the decision he has made to take on a new challenge in a different country and follow his childhood dream of playing for Real Madrid," Chelsea club director Marina Granovskaia said in a statement.
Hazard's arrival also adds more uncertainty around the future of Gareth Bale, who has played both on the left and right of the attacking trio in recent months but is clearly not part of Zidane's plans.
Madrid want to sell Bale to raise money for more signings, with French left-back Ferland Mendy the next player expected to arrive, from Lyon.
But the Wales international will not be forced out and has so far shown no interest in the handful of clubs that have shown interest. Neither Bale nor his agent Jonathan Barnett have spoken to the club since the end of the season.
Hazard though would do well to match Bale's record in Madrid as he looks to add to the trophies he won at Chelsea, which included two Premier League and two Europa League titles, as well as one FA Cup and one League Cup.
At the end of the 2014-15 season, in which Chelsea won the league, Hazard was awarded both the PFA Players' Player of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season. He was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year four times, in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
If Madrid pay the full amount, Chelsea stand to make a profit of more than €100 million, having signed Hazard for close to €40 million from Lille in 2012.
Chelsea had just won the Champions League when Hazard chose them over several other clubs but they have failed to replicate the success in the competition. After reaching the semi-finals in 2014, Chelsea have not gone past the last 16 in the last five seasons.

MADRID • Thibaut Courtois left Chelsea on bad terms last summer and he expects to feel the same anger from Atletico Madrid fans when he lines up for Real Madrid in LaLiga today.
Courtois developed into one of the world's top goalkeepers after three years on loan at Atletico, but this will be his first appearance at the Wanda Metropolitano in the colours of their bitter rivals.
The Belgium goalkeeper will also be involved in another subplot, as his former Chelsea teammate Alvaro Morata is expected to make his home debut against the club where he came up through the academy and spent five seasons at.
The Spain striker may be charged with leading Atletico's line in what could prove a pivotal cross-town derby this weekend.
Real arrive on the back of four LaLiga wins on the bounce and will leapfrog their opponents with a win, while a victory for Atletico could jump-start their faltering title challenge, having fallen six points adrift of leaders Barcelona.
For Courtois, a reunion with Diego Simeone's men is not new - he faced them twice for Chelsea in the Champions League last season and again at the Santiago Bernabeu in September - but the 26-year-old is expecting a far more hostile reception this time round.
He said: "It happens in football, it's a derby and a derby here in Madrid is always heated.
"They'll whistle and shout, everything you would expect, it's part of football. I will always respect them. Now I'm playing for the other side."
However, Courtois, who won multiple honours with Atletico including the 2013-14 LaLiga title, offered an olive branch to Atletico fans, who earlier in the term vandalised his stadium plaque.
He added: "It is still a special match. I respect the fans and the club a lot, in the end, they gave me the opportunity to play when I was just 19 years old."
