Football: Lewandowski scores 200th Bundesliga goal against old club Dortmund

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski became only the fifth player in history to score 200 Bundesliga goals during Saturday's (April 6) emphatic 5-0 win over his former club Borussia Dortmund.
Lewandowski marked the milestone in style, chipping Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Buerki and volleying into the open net to score Bayern's second goal of the evening and reach his own double century.
He added another in the 89th minute, taking his tally to 201.
"I never thought I would score so many goals in the Bundesliga," the Polish striker told Sky.
"I still remember my first one very well."
Lewandowski's first Bundesliga goal came for Dortmund against Schalke back in 2010.
His brace on Saturday means he is now the fifth most prolific player in German league history.

He is just 19 goals off former Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes, who is third in the all-time list.
"I'm not too far away from Jupp's mark," he told Sky with a grin.

German champions Bayern Munich have not yet made an offer for Manchester City winger Leroy Sane despite their long-standing desire to sign him, club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on Wednesday.

One step at a time for Bale as Wales gear up for Slovakia
WREXHAM • Wales manager Ryan Giggs has defended his decision to leave Gareth Bale out of the team who beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in a friendly on Wednesday, saying that he is trying to keep the forward fresh for important matches ahead.
The Welsh needed a stoppage-time goal from Liverpool teenager Ben Woodburn to seal the win in Wrexham and save Giggs' blushes.
Bale was one of several players, including Aaron Ramsey and David Brooks, omitted just days before the team begin their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign against Slovakia in Cardiff on Sunday.
"Of course it's disappointing for the fans," Giggs said on the BBC.
"They want to see the likes of Gareth. But it's my job to make sure we are ready for Sunday.
"Gareth got his first 90 minutes in three months (for Real Madrid last weekend), so it was just too much of a risk with Sunday in mind.
"I want to take the pressure off him at the same time, so if he's not available we're not just reliant on one player."
Trinidad and Tobago are ranked 93rd in the world - 74 places lower than Wales - yet it seemed they might be rewarded with a creditable draw at a Racecourse Ground where their manager Dennis Lawrence played for Wrexham.
The last match between the two countries had seen Bale become Wales' youngest player then, at 16 years and 315 days, in a win over Trinidad in a 2006 friendly.
Wales' victory meant that Giggs, who was appointed 14 months ago, has clinched only his fourth win to go with five defeats and a draw.
The Manchester United legend had previously said that he is determined to win over his doubters and is aware that he will be judged on the results from the Euro 2020 qualifying matches.

English clubs make history

LONDON • Arsenal and Chelsea have qualified for the Europa League final, completing a historic week with European football's two major finals now featuring Premier League teams.
The London clubs will face one another in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 29, while Liverpool will play Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1.
The Gunners beat Valencia 4-2 on Thursday night to win their semi-final 7-3 on aggregate.
Chelsea sealed their place by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3 on penalties, with Kepa Arrizabalaga making two saves, after the match finished 1-1 after extra time, with the aggregate at 2-2.
It will be the first time in European football history that one country has monopolised the two finals and means that both trophies will head to England. Many will argue that the billions flowing into the EPL are now having a direct effect on those competitions.
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri, who has now steered his side to two major finals and a top-four place in his debut season, pointed to the English clean sweep as evidence of the league's excellence.
The Italian, whose Blues side opened the scoring through Ruben Loftus-Cheek before Luka Jovic equalised, said: "If you think that, to get to the final of the League Cup, we had to play against Liverpool, against Tottenham - the finalists of the Champions League.
"Then we played against, in my opinion, the best team in Europe in the final, Manchester City, you can understand the level here is very high. At this moment, the Premier League is the best in Europe and, as a consequence, in the world.
"But it's not easy for an English team to arrive in the last month in a very good condition, physically, because here, we play more than in the other countries."
Eden Hazard, in what could be his final home game, drilled the winning spot kick to spark wild scenes at Stamford Bridge.
While the Belgium forward, who is entering the final year of his contract in the summer and has been linked with a blockbuster move to Real Madrid, admitted his future was undecided, his only focus was now to "go to Baku with quality to win the game".
He said: "Against Arsenal, we've struggled a bit the last two or three years. I am only thinking to win something for this club. If it's my last game, I will try to do everything. If it's not, we'll see. In my mind, I don't know yet."
Arsenal ended their Mestalla jinx for their first win on Valencia's home ground to reach their first European final since 2006.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang revealed his teammates had learnt from last term's semi-final exit to Atletico Madrid. The Gabon international, who scored his first hat-trick for the club, said: "It means a lot. This year, we didn't make the same mistakes."
Lifting the trophy is Arsenal's only realistic chance of ending their two-year Champions League exile. They need to beat Burnley away tomorrow, and also conjure up an unlikely eight-goal swing, while Spurs also have to lose at home to Everton, for them to finish in the top four.

Football: Solskjaer ref rage as Arsenal dent United's top four bid

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed referee Jonathan Moss should be "disappointed" with his decision to give Arsenal a controversial penalty in their 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday (March 10).
Solskjaer was furious that Moss ruled Fred's challenge on Alexandre Lacazette was worthy of a spot-kick in the 69th minute.
The United midfielder made only the slightest contact with Lacazette as he lent into the France striker, who immediately tumbled to the turf.
With United already trailing to Granit Xhaka's opener, the decision was a hammer blow as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slotted home the penalty to effectively seal the three points.
"The referee will be disappointed when he sees it as I don't think it is a penalty," United interim manger Solskjaer complained.
However, Solskjaer refused to condemn United keeper David de Gea after he was left flat-footed by Xhaka's swerving long-range effort.
"David (de Gea) is disappointed every time he concedes a goal. The ball moves so strange and it looks like it goes to David's left and it changed direction," he said.

It was United's first Premier League defeat since Dec 16 at Liverpool in Jose Mourinho's last game in charge.
For Solskjaer, whose side enjoyed a stunning Champions League win at Paris Saint Germain in midweek, this was his first loss in 16 domestic matches since being appointed, ending a club-record run of nine successive away wins.
Solskjaer admitted United's tame opening may have been in part caused by fatigue after their European heroics.
"In the first 15, 20 minutes we were too slow and never put them under pressure," he said.
"Maybe a backlash from Wednesday night, but we created chances and when they get the first goal it becomes a different game.
"We created so many more chances today than when we beat them in the FA Cup. Sometimes it happens, we hit the woodwork twice.
"It has been fantastic so far but today is the lowest we have been because we lost and missed the chance to put pressure on Spurs."
Arsenal move above United into fourth place as the race to qualify for next season's Champions League gathers pace.
The Gunners are two points ahead of United and only one point behind third placed Tottenham, with sixth placed Chelsea three points adrift of the top four with a game in hand.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery was delighted with a statement result that showed his team can hold their own against the league's elite.
"They (United) were in a good moment after one result against PSG but we had a big performance and we are in a good moment in the Premier League," he said.
"To take three points and get a good position for our target is very good and I'm happy for the players.
"Being competitive like today for 90 minutes can give us a stronger mentality."

"Di Francesco will remain the coach who took Roma to the Champions League semi-finals after who knows how many years and he deserves credit for that. Football: Fulham player Ben Davis defaults on national service commitments

Football: Fulham player Ben Davis defaults on national service commitments

SINGAPORE - Footballer Ben Davis has defaulted on his national service commitments, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said in a statement on Monday (Feb 18).
In response to queries from The Straits Times, Mindef said: "Mr Benjamin Davis is a NS defaulter. He failed to report for NS as required. He is also staying overseas without a valid exit permit.
"Mr Davis has committed offences under the Enlistment Act, and is liable upon conviction to a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years."
ST understands that Davis was required to enlist on Feb 14.
The Phuket-born 18-year-old had signed professional terms with English Premier League club Fulham in July last year, the first Singaporean footballer to do so with a top-tier English club.
A former student at the Singapore Sports School, he left the Republic in 2015 to move to London to join Fulham's academy, where he is registered as an English national.
However, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), which had supported Davis’ application for deferment, expressed its dismay at the news and issued a strongly worded admonition of the player, whom it capped at the Under-19 level. Davis was also called up to the senior national team last year but was not fielded.

A spokesman said: “The FAS is extremely disappointed with Mr Benjamin Davis’ default of his NS obligations. It is thoroughly irresponsible on the part of Mr Davis, and also reneges on his (and his father’s) assurance to the FAS that Mr Davis would discharge his NS commitments and play for the Singapore national team.

“Mr Davis had lived in Singapore for many years, and has benefited from the resources used to educate and train him as a footballer over this period of time. He was invited to play for the Singapore national team, and he agreed.
“The FAS had supported Benjamin Davis’ application to defer NS on this basis.
“While the matter will now be dealt with by Mindef, the FAS wishes to state categorically that we do not condone such conduct nor did it ever arise in our discussions with Mr Davis that he would seek to avoid his liability.”
Davis was born in Thailand to an English father and Thai mother.
After he signed pro terms last year, Mindef confirmed that his application for NS deferment had been rejected as he did not “meet the criteria for long-term deferment from full-time NS”.
The decision sparked a debate among the sporting fraternity and the general public about issues such as maximising sporting talent and the need to maintain Singapore’s security.
A month later in Parliament, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen laid out the reasons for the rejection, highlighting that “there was no commitment to serve Singapore and our national interests” despite Harvey Davis’ contention that if Ben were to become the first Singaporean to play in the EPL, it would “make Singapore proud”.
Dr Ng reiterated that “deferment... cannot be for that individual, no matter how talented, to pursue his own interests or career, even if it vicariously brings credit or fame to Singapore”.
He also noted that Harvey Davis had “consistently refused” to pin down a date when Ben would return to serve NS.
Mindef has also noted that there are programmes in place to help national athletes continue training while serving their NS.
“Many talented sportsmen, including footballers, have completed their NS dutifully first before pursuing their professional careers. Mindef has in place schemes during full-time NS to enable them to continue training to retain and improve their skills,” it said last July.
“We also provide additional training opportunities in the lead-up to major Games such as the South-east Asian and Olympic Games where our sportsmen represent Singapore and do us proud.”
In the last 15 years, only three athletes – swimmers Joseph Schooling and Quah Zheng Wen, and sailor Maximillian Soh – have been granted deferment. Schooling and Quah have represented the Republic at various Olympics, with the former making history by winning a gold medal in the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Games.
While Davis had a strong start in his first season with the Fulham U-18 team - he scored once in 10 games, making 13 tackles and 16 interceptions while racking up a pass accuracy of 90 per cent - ST understands he has found the going tougher in his sophomore season.
A source, who did not want to be named, said that Davis' performance was adversely affected after news emerged that his application for NS deferment had been rejected.
While he started 12 of Fulham U-18s’ first 14 matches of the season, he has played only 136 out of a possible 630 minutes in their last seven games. He also earned the call-up to the Under-21 team for four games, but was an unused substitute on each of those occasions.
Based on a sentencing framework introduced by the High Court in July 2017, there are four bands of sentencing based on the length of the period of default:

Football: Kane insists club rivalries will not split England camp

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Harry Kane insists the Three Lions' squad are too united to be divided by the tension of club rivalries surrounding the Premier League title race and upcoming Champions League ties.
Four English sides have reached the last eight of the Champions League for the first time in a decade with Tottenham striker Kane set to face a host of international teammates who play for Manchester City three times next month in two legs of a quarter-final and a vital Premier League match.
City and Liverpool are vying for the Premier League title, while Spurs face competition from Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea for a top-four finish.
However, unlike England camps of old where club rivalries led to factions forming on international duty, Kane believes Gareth Southgate's squad will not be distracted ahead of Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic on Friday and away to Montenegro on Monday.
"We put that to one side, even the Liverpool and City boys. When we are here it is 100 percent England and when we go back I'm sure there will plenty of text messages and group messages flying about," said Kane on Tuesday (March 19).
"We've got a great bond here and at the end of the day we are good friends.
"Whether we play for one club or another, when we come here we get on very well.
"Of course when we are back at our clubs we try 110 percent to try and beat each other but we have that respect for each other that we can talk afterwards and be friends."
After a run to the last four of the World Cup last summer and qualifying for the Nations League semi-finals to come in June, England are one of the favourites to win the European championships next year.
Wembley will host the semi-finals and final of that tournament, while England will also play their group games on home soil should they qualify.
And Kane admitted that is extra motivation as the qualifying campaign gets underway on Friday.
"It is a great incentive to have the opportunity to play in a European Championship where we could have quite a few games at Wembley," he added.
"It is exciting. People expect us to qualify and they think it is going to be an easy group but it is never that easy.
"We have to go and be professional. Of course we back ourselves to go through but we still have to go and do it. It is important we start well and hopefully build on that."
At 25, Kane is one of the senior members of Southgate's squad with Declan Rice and Callum Hudson-Odoi winning their first call-ups to add to a growing pool of young talent.
Rice has switched his allegiance to the country of his birth after playing three times for the Republic of Ireland in friendlies.
Kane also had the chance to represent Ireland via his paternal grandparents, but said he never considered anything other than playing for England.
However, he believes no one can blame the West Ham midfielder for his decision.
"I'm sure it was a tough decision," said Kane.
"He seems like a great lad and enjoying his football and he's been having a great season.
"I'm sure he took his time and the decision he made is what he thought will be best for his future and nobody can blame him for that."

Football: Manchester United move into Premier League's top four with 3-0 win at Fulham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United rolled to their 10th win in 11 games under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 3-0 win at Fulham on Saturday (Feb 9), climbing into the top four in the Premier League for the first time since the opening weekend.
Paul Pogba fired United ahead from an impossibly tight angle in the 14th minute, springing in behind the defence and onto a pass from Anthony Martial on the left, turning and shooting first time between keeper Sergio Rico and the near post.
Martial doubled the lead nine minutes later in style, collecting the ball on the halfway line, jinking past Denis Odoi and racing all the way into the area before stroking his shot beyond the reach of Rico.
Fulham had begun the game brightly, creating four shots in the first five minutes, but their chances petered out and they seemed to lose confidence as United controlled the ball for long periods.
Their best chance was in the opening minute when Andre Schurrle broke forward and floated the ball across the area and down into the path of Luciano Vietto. The Argentine, however, sent his shot just wide of the far post.
United’s Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku had an anonymous first half, outshone by his two French team mates. But he helped create the penalty that led to the third goal when he charged forward to pass to Juan Mata, who was bundled over inside the area by Fulham’s Maxime Le Marchand.
Pogba converted from the spot to put the game beyond Fulham’s reach, and was then substituted, most likely to keep him fit ahead of a tough schedule in the coming weeks.

United face French champions Paris St Germain in a Champions League last-16 tie, Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round, and host arch-rivals Liverpool all within the month.
The win at Fulham lifts United into fourth place in the league, ahead of Chelsea’s visit to Manchester City on Sunday.
Pogba appeared happy with the result but remained focused on his side’s busy schedule ahead.
“The good atmosphere helps the team, and for me, being more in the box gives me more chances to score... There’s still a long way to go and we have a lot of big games coming up,” he told BBC.
Fulham remain in relegation territory in 19th place, and they too have a tough schedule ahead. Yet to win away from home this season, their next three visitors at Craven Cottage are all powerhouses – Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Schurrle came off near the start of the second half, giving way to Cyrus Christie as the Cottagers looked for ways to get themselves back in the game.
But luck was not on their side at all, with Ryan Babel somehow managing to miss a golden opportunity from barely two feet out in the closing minutes, sending Joe Bryan’s cross onto the post and out.
The crowd, unimpressed at the Schurrle substitution and the very late introduction of promotion heroes Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney, booed Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri off at the end of the match.

PORTO • For Portugal, success begets success, forging an "almost indestructible family" mentality.
So long the nearly men on the international stage, their Euro 2016 triumph - the country's first title - was a culmination of a golden period during which they have also reached the Euro 2004 final, the 2006 World Cup semi-finals and the last four at Euro 2012.
And after clinching the inaugural Nations League with a 1-0 win over the Dutch in Porto last Sunday, Portugal have every intention of continuing their winning momentum - starting with the defence of their European Championship title.
Long-serving manager Fernando Santos, who has been at the helm since 2014, said: "Sometimes, things are not perfect, but that is not for lack of effort. For the last five years, we know what we are capable of doing. We are always candidates to win the competitions we take part in."
He made two key chances for the final, introducing Danilo Pereira instead of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves to give added protection to his team's backline, while replacing burgeoning talent Joao Felix with Goncalo Guedes.
Both moves paid off as Valencia forward Guedes scored the winner and Porto enforcer Danilo subdued Barcelona-bound Frenkie de Jong, the key midfield cog for the Dutch.
Santos said his team must not stop evolving if they are to lift more silverware. He added: "The future is here and now, right outside the door. If we look back to 2016, some of those players are no longer here - this is an ongoing process."
New blood like Benfica forward Felix - one of Europe's hottest talents - have already been given their first taste of international football while there is a talented supporting cast led by Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, who picked up the Player of the Tournament award.
Portugal's undisputed star Cristiano Ronaldo, 34, however, said he had no plans to retire as he still had the "same enthusiasm" from when he won his first cap at 18.
Despite being a peripheral presence in the final, the Juventus forward still had an impressive tournament after his hat-trick in the semi-final against Switzerland.
He told Portuguese TV channel RTP: "As long as I have the strength and motivation, I will continue to represent the colours of Portugal. When I am with the national team, I feel like at home."

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Crystal Palace moved further away from the Premier League relegation zone with a 3-1 win at fellow strugglers Burnley on Saturday (March 2) thanks to second half goals from Michy Batshuayi and Wilfried Zaha.
Palace took the lead in the 15th minute when Jeffrey Schlupp's pull-back struck Burnley defender Phil Bardsley and ricocheted into his own goal.
Burnley dominated the rest of the opening half with Chris Wood forcing a fine reflex save out of Wayne Hennessey with a fierce shot and the Clarets peppering the Palace box with crosses from deep.
But three minutes after the re-start, Palace struck again when full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka's pass was blasted home, first-time, by Batshuayi.
Ashley Barnes then missed a good chance to pull a goal back for the home side, putting the ball over from two metres out, as Burnley continued to press.
The game followed a similar pattern to the first half with Burnley on top but lacking an edge in the final third.
Palace, as often on the road, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and should have had a third when a mistake from Ben Mee put Batshuayi through but he pushed the ball too far when trying to round Burnley keeper Tom Heaton.
The game was wrapped up in outstanding fashion by Zaha who tormented the Burnley defence, twisting inside and out, before firing a low shot past Heaton.
A Barnes header gave Burnley a late consolation goal and although subtitute Peter Crouch went close to a second, Palace's lead was never in real danger.
The South London side are now eight points above the relegation zone and manager Roy Hodgson was well pleased with the showing.
"That was a very satisfying performance, it's never easy to win at Burnley. They are in good form and we knew the type of problems they would pose and did post but we dealt with them extremely well," said the former England manager.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche said his side's failure to deliver quality in crucial moments was the key factor.
"It's confusing when you look at the stats - the stats make it look like a good performance - but we know stats don't win games," he said.
Burnley are in 16th place, five points above Cardiff City who occupy the highest spot in the relegation zone.

Mike Ashley to sell Newcastle to Arab billionaire for 350 million: The Sun

LONDON (REUTERS) - Mike Ashley has agreed to sell Newcastle United to Abu Dhabi's billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan for £350 million (S$612 million), the Sun reported late on Sunday (May 26).
The contracts between Ashley and Sheikh Khaled have been signed and submitted to the Premier League, according to the report.
Ashley, who bought a controlling stake in the Premier League club in 2007, has in the past tried to sell the club.
Ashley, who owns British sportswear retailer Sports Direct International Plc said last October that he had not received any acceptable offers for Newcastle, a year after he officially put the club up for sale, but told Sky News in December that talks on a deal had made promising progress.
Any potential buyer of the club must be able to provide transfer funds, he had said at the time.
Sheikh Khaled, the cousin of Manchester City owner and Arab billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, previously failed in his bid to buy Liverpool Football Club for £2 billion last year, the Daily Mail has previously reported.
Sheikh Khaled is also the founder of Bin Zayed Group, a leading conglomerate with diverse business interests in the local and international markets.

Newcastle United, the Premier League and the Bin Zayed Group did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comments.

Football: Japan's Maya Yoshida warns young teammates - pressure comes with the territory

TOKYO (REUTERS) - Japan captain Maya Yoshida warned his young teammates that they will need to handle the pressure that comes with being Asian Cup favourites as the four-time winners prepare to open their campaign against Turkmenistan on Wednesday (Jan 9).
The Samurai Blue are the most successful side in the tournament's history with four titles and are among the favourites in the United Arab Emirates, alongside South Korea and Iran.
Southampton defender Yoshida, who was a member of the squad that won Japan's last Asian Cup title in 2011, said that the pressure to succeed comes with the territory.
"There's always a strong expectation that we'll win in Asia. There's a lot of pressure, but it's something you have to deal with in order to win," Yoshida said on Tuesday as he looked ahead to the Turkmenistan clash.
"If you can't handle that pressure, you won't make it into the World Cup (squad), or to World Cup qualifying."
Coach Hajime Moriyasu, who is undefeated in his first five games in charge, has named a young and inexperienced squad including 12 players with 10 or fewer caps for the tournament where they are in Group F alongside Turkmenistan, Oman and Uzbekistan.
Yoshida wants his young teammates to take advantage of the opportunity in the UAE to cement themselves in the Japan side.
"You can't take on the world by yourself," he added.
"To take the next step as a Japan player, you have to overcome that."

Football: Robin van Persie tells Manchester United to give 'fair chance' to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

LONDON (AFP) - Robin van Persie has urged Manchester United to keep faith with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the under-fire manager's turbulent end to his first season in charge.
Solskjaer presided over a miserable conclusion to a campaign that saw United fail to qualify for the Champions League after finishing sixth in the Premier League.
However, Van Persie, whose goals helped United win their last Premier League title in 2013, is adamant Solskjaer deserves more time to get the club back on track.
"I think it's the perfect match, it's just they're having a bad spell," Van Persie told BBC Sport on Wednesday (May 22).
"Back in the day it was normal for a manager to get time. Nowadays if you lose six games, you're out. Is that the solution?
"Give someone time, especially if it's a kid from the club."
Former United striker Solskjaer had made a positive impact after replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho as interim boss in December.

Solskjaer oversaw a 15-match unbeaten domestic run and led United to a stunning Champions League last 16, second leg win over Paris Saint-Germain.
But United's form dipped dramatically once Solskjaer was hired on a permanent basis in March and a run of six defeats from their last 10 games shattered their top four hopes.
Solskjaer's problems have mounted amid claims that United midfielder Paul Pogba wants to join Real Madrid, while the boss is reportedly unhappy with the fitness levels and commitment of some of his squad.
The 46-year-old, whose only other managerial spells came at Cardiff and Molde, needs to make a flying start to next season if he is to avoid calls for his dismissal.
But Dutch forward Van Persie, who scored 58 goals in 105 games for United, says his old team need to let the Norwegian grow into the role rather than panicking at the first sign of bad results.
"It's funny because when he started everyone was so positive, they were winning and they made a miracle by beating PSG," Van Persie said.
"Everyone was screaming like, 'Give the guy a permanent deal'. And then since that permanent deal the luck went away a little bit; they've been losing more games than they want to."
Van Persie, who retired at the end of this season after a spell with Feyenoord, doesn't think United's problems will be solved only by splashing out on new signings.
"If a player has a couple of bad games, 'OK, sell him!'. If he doesn't score a few goals, 'OK, he's out, he's finished'," he added.
"Back in the day you used to get time, you can make mistakes, you can learn. Now I get the feeling that time is less. Ideally, you would get time - as a player, as a coach."

Football: Ikhsan Fandi scores first goal for Raufoss in 6-1 pre-season friendly win over Elverum

SINGAPORE - Two minutes were all it took for Ikhsan Fandi to smash in his first goal for his new club Raufoss IL and help them beat Elverum Fotball 6-1 early on Saturday morning (Jan 26) at the Raufoss Storhall indoor arena.
The 19-year-old, who became the first Lion to join a European team in 30 years when he signed a two-year deal with the Norwegian second-tier side earlier this month, was brought on with fellow forward Thierry Dabove in the 59th minute of a pre-season friendly against third-tier Norwegian opponents.
The duo combined to deadly effect shortly after, when Dabove's shot was parried by former Raufoss goalkeeper Andreas Heggen, only for Ikhsan to show his predatory instincts by beating two defenders to thump the loose ball in with his right foot inside the six-yard box and make it 3-1 to Raufoss.
The new Raufoss No. 18 also displayed his willingness to run at the defence before he recorded his first assist by picking out Ryan Doghman with a through ball in the 84th minute to increase the lead to 5-1.
Ikhsan told The Straits Times: "I'm glad I got the first goal out of the way quickly but there are always things to improve on.
"The coaches were happy with my 30-minute performance. I just wanted to express myself and show the people here I can play football.
"But this is only a friendly and I still have to improve my fitness. I also want to link up play better and make more runs behind defences to create trouble for the opponents and opportunities for my team."

Raufoss and Ikhsan will face a sterner test when they continue their pre-season preparations with another friendly against Norwegian top-division club Odd on Thursday.
They will kick off the new season at Nest-Sotra on March 31.

Blues will not let Hudson-Odoi leave

Blues will not let Hudson-Odoi leave
LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has confirmed that Callum Hudson-Odoi will remain with the club, just days after he requested a transfer, saying the 18-year-old is "the future of Chelsea and English football".
The forward, who has 18 months left on his contract, scored in Sunday's 3-0 FA Cup fourth-round win over Sheffield Wednesday, but has yet to start a Premier League match this season.
Speaking ahead of today's league trip to Bournemouth, Chelsea manager Sarri said: "On the pitch, I am very happy with him.
"The club told me in this market window he will remain with us for sure, and very probably in the next. I am really very happy with this.
"He is improving. I think he will be the future of our club and English football."
Hudson-Odoi, the subject of a £35 million (S$62 million) bid from German champions Bayern Munich, said he is concerned about his lack of playing time at Stamford Bridge.
But he is unlikely to start today, with Sarri putting his faith in Gonzalo Higuain, the striker he coached while they were at Napoli.
He joined last week on loan from Juventus until the end of the season while Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has moved to Atletico Madrid in an 18-month loan deal.
The Argentinian Higuain, 31, played in the FA Cup and could make his league debut today for the Blues, who are fourth on 47 points.

Sarri is happy with the progress of his team, who can still win four titles this campaign, in his first season in charge of the London club.
"In the Premier League, there is not a normal match, it is so difficult," the Italian said.
"We have to play a difficult (League Cup) final and FA Cup, we have to fight in Premier League. At the moment, I am happy. We need to improve, we can do that."
Chelsea have been drawn against United in the FA Cup fifth round, a repeat of last year's final which they won 1-0.
